Chapter 5

Rahat and Haya shared an unsaid bond since the first time they laid eyes on each other. That unsaid bond bloomed into a beautiful friendship based on trust and mutual respect. They had their family but they were two lonely souls with a void in their lives, Rahat because he lost Naaz and Haya because she never had someone to fill that void. Slowly their friendship made them feel that maybe that was the missing piece which could make them complete. Neither one was ready to take the first step. Their friendship was too precious to lose if there was nothing more that friendship in the others mind and heart. Rahat had saved Haya from being molested by Shoaib. She did not have words to thank him but then she did not need them. Rahat did not do her a favor that she needed to thank him. There are something's for which and some people to whom, to say Thank you' feels very minimal. Rahat saved her from being broken after Shoaib would assault her but she could not stop his family form breaking. Munisa who believed and loved her husband very much left with him. Haya had vowed to bring Munisa back home and reunite Rahat with the only person who in the whole wide world he could call his family. She also had something very important to do. She had to take away the pain and fill his life and heart with laughter and happiness.

Rahat as he had promised Haya began giving her self defense lessons. They experienced closeness during the sessions but it did not feel awkward. It felt... Right... Perfect... Some unknown feelings stirred inside Haya making her feel all gooey and tingly... She felt the heat color her cheeks red when Rahat touched her to show her a move. She did not want Rahat to know what she was feeling. She did not want to embarrass herself in front of him neither did she want him to think low of her. He was after all another woman's man. Did it matter that Rahat's Naaz was not alive he was still Naaz's Rahat. Haya would never want something or someone who was not completely hers. She needed to a break to collect herself.

Dilshad: Haya bacche ye kya pehna hai tumne?

Haya (Signs): Badi ammi wo Rahat mujhe self defense ki lesson de rahe hain iss liye...

Dilshad: Accha matlab ab kuch waqt mein tum bhi ye kehne lagogi ki mujhe karate aata ahi. Main inti strong hoon ki jab main salute karti hoon toh kabhi kabhi khud his behosh ho jaati hoon...

Haya laughed heartily. Rahat who had just walked in saw her laugh. Tears came to his eyes. Haya was so full of life. He would do anything to make her smile to hear her laugh... Her laugh, how would it sound? He felt bad not for her but for himself... He would never be able to hear her sweet voice, her laugh which would sound as tinkling bells or her soft giggle which would be a reminiscent of wind chimes... He went out of his room and saw Haya talking with Dilshad. He wanted to speak with Haya one day like that. It was wrong to do so but he was curious to know what made Hays laugh like that. He evesdropped on Haya and Dishad's conversation.

Haya (Signs): Badi ammi aapne kaha main bhi, bhi se kya matlab hai aapka?

Dilshad: Tumhaari mami, Zoya, wo humesha ye kehti thi. Chahe jitna bhi tension ho uski ye baat mere Asad ke chehre par ek halki si muskaan le aati. Jab Zoya ye dekhti na ki Asad muskuraane laga hai wo aur aisi baatein karti jo bhale Asad ko annoy kare par hansa bhi deti. She was really special.

Haya (Signs+Pouts): Main special nahi hoon?

Dilshad: Of course, ma ke liye uska har baccha special hota hai.

Haya (Signs): Badi ammi please aur bataiye na mamu aur mami ke baare mein... Unke pyar, unki dosti, unke rishtey ke baare mein...

Dilshad shared with Haya many memories of Asad and Zoya. Haya laughed on hearing some and became sad sometimes. When she was happy Rahat wanted to laugh with her. When she was sad he wanted to rush to her and take away her tears. It was difficult but he controlled himself on both occasions. The next couple of weeks Rahat and Haya came closer during the self defense lessons but as soon as the lessons were over they locked themselves in their room to stay away from each other. They were clear about their own growing feelings for the other but confused about the others' feeling for themselves.

Rahat never spoke of it but he missed his sister a lot. Dilshad and Haya both noticed it. Dilshad felt helpless but not Haya. She was determined to bring Munisa home. She had no idea where Shoaib and Munisa were. Haya prayed to Allah for Munisa's return and one day Allah did answer her prayers.

Approximately three weeks and 5 days after Munisa left with her husband.

Haya stepped outside to pluck flowers to arrange in Rahat's room and saw Munisa sitting there. At first Haya could not believe that it was Munisa. She had bruises on her face. The glow of her face and the sparkle of her eyes were lost. She looked like someone who had lost everything, who had been defeated by life and its hardships. Haya rushed to her.

Haya (Signs): Munisa B aap yahaan? Ye sab kya hua? Aap yahaan kyun baithi hain? Chaliye ghar ke andar.

Munisa: Main nahi aa sakti Haya. Jo sitam maine tumhaare saath kiya mujhe usiki saza mili hai. Kaise main uss ghar mein aaoon jise main chod gayi? Kis haq se main iss ghar mein aaoon jo Rahat ka hai?

Haya (Signs): Iss ghar ki beti hain aap... Rahat ki behen hain aap...

Munisa: Ek aisi behen jisne sahi waqt mein apne bhai ka saath nahi diya... Ek galat insaan ke liye apne bhai ko chod diya maine... Kaise nazrein milaoongi main Rahat se, tumse, tumhaari badi ammi se... Shoaib ke pyar mein itna andhi ho gayi ki ye bhi nahi socha ki Rahat kabhi kuch galat nahi kar sakta ... Mera bhai kabhi galat ka saath nahi deta... Kaise itni badi galti ho gayi muujhse...

Haya (Signs): Aapke sawaal mein hi jawaab chupa hai... Aapse galti hui aur galtiyaan toh insaan se hoti hi hai na... Important baat ye hai ki aapko aapki galti ka ehsaas hai... Aap laut aayi hain apne ghar ... apne apno ke paas... Chaliye ye ghar aur aapke bhai aapke bina bahut akele ho gaye hain...

Haya brings Munisa inside the house. Rahat was in his room and Dilshad had gone to meet Sanam. Rahat came out and saw Munisa. At first sight of hers he remembered the woman who sided with Shoaib. He was about to burst out in anger but Haya signed him to control himself and requested him to go to his room. Shoaib was pacing in his room. Haya helped Munisa settle back into her room and went to Rahat's.

Rahat: Haya Munisa yahaan kya kar rahi hai? Maine kaha tha uss se ek baar wo Shoaib ke saath gayi toh mere ghar ke darwaaze uske liye humesha ke liye band ho jaayegne. Use bolo yahaan se chali jaaye...

Haya (Signs): Kahaan chali jaaye Rahat? Uss haiwaan ke paas jisne unhe itna peeta hai. Rahat Munisa B ne jo kiya wo unhe bachpan se sikhaya gaya hai... Har haal mein biwi ko apne shauhar ka saath dena chahiye. Rahat Shoaib unke shauhar hain... Unki pehli aur shayad aakhri mohabbat hai... Rahat aapko apni chot dikhayi de rahi hai jo Munisa B ne aapko di jab wo aapko chodkar chali gayi par kya aapko unke zakhm nahi dikhayi dete jo Shoaib ne unke jism, dil aur unki rooh par diye hain?

Haya made Rahat sit on the bed. She kneeled down in front of him. She took his hand in hers and continued.

Haya (Signs): Rahat Munisa B ne jo sach humaare khene se nahi mana wo unhone apni aakhon se dekha... Inn hafton mein unki poori duniya ko badal gayi hai... Wo bhi badal gayi hain... Rahat unhone khud apni aakhon se Shoaib ko kisi gair aurat ke saath unke apne bistar mein dekha... Kya aapko ehsaas hai ki ek biwi par kya guzarti hai uss waqt... That is the biggest insult to a wife Rahat... Par Munisa B ne apne haq ke liye lada... Toh jaante hain Shoaib ne unhe itna peeta ki Munisa B...

Tears were flowing from both Haya and Rahat's eyes. Haya wiped his tears with her dupatta.

Haya (Signs): Rahat Munisa B ko aapki zaroorat hai. Apne bhai ki... Rahat ek sirf Munisa B hi hain aapke paas family ke naam par... Kya Shoaib ke liye aap apni behen ko khud se door kar denge... Rahat aapko Munisa B ke liye Shoaib se insaaf lena hai... Aapko ladna hai Rahat apni behen ke liye... unke self respect ke liye... Rahat she needs you...

Munisa who had come to apologize to Rahat saw Haya plead with Rahat for Munisa's sake. How wrong had she been about Haya? Munisa was angry at herself for all the things she had done and said to Haya. She had to make up for it but how could she face them? She stood there crying silently as she saw Haya take care of Rahat. She felt happy for her brother to have Haya in his life. She realized that Haya was perfect for Rahat. She understood him and his pain. The person who stands by you in tough times is the right life partner for you. Munisa let them be.

After sometime Rahat who had been deeply feeling pain for his sister composed himself. He came to Munisa's room and they talked for a long time. Munisa told Rahat everything that she had been through in the time that she was away from home. Rahat asked her what she wanted to do. Munisa did not care about the jewels Shoaib took from her but she wanted him punished for abusing her physically and mentally. He played with her emotions and she wanted him to pay for it. She wanted a divorce. Rahat promised her that Shoaib would pay for every misdeed of his. He contacted the lawyer for the legal proceedings against Shoaib. He also contacted the maulwi sahib who had performed Munisa and Shoaib's nikaah ceremony. Munisa thought she had done crying but on seeing her brother do everything she wanted for her happiness tears began to flow. Rahat let her cry as much as she wanted. After this day he would not let his sister cry nor would anyone be able to bring tears to his sister's eyes.

Rahat: Munisa main tumhare liye ladoonga but tumhe ye ladaai beech mein nahi chodni. I know ki tum Shoaib se moohabbat...

Munisa: Nahi Rahat... Wo pehli dafa jab maine use kisi gair aurat ke saath dekha... Shaoib mere liye gair ho gaya... Jab usne mujhpar haath uthaya wo mohabbat nafrat mein tabdeel ho gayi... Mujhe azaadi chahiye Rahat mujhe Shoaib se azaadi aur uske liye kaid chahiye... Rahat ye lights aise kyun?

Munisa saw the lights flicker in her room. She thought that there was something with the electricity. Rahat smiled and tok her out of her bedroom. They stood up in the gallery.Rahat pointed towards something and Munisa looked in that direction. The flickering lights caught Haya's attention and she went to open the door.

Rahat: Wo Munisa Haya ko sunayi nahi deta aur iss wajah se ek din uski badi ammi ko bahut der tak bahar rukna pada tha... Unki tabiyat thodi kharaab ho gayi thi aur Haya ko bahut guilt feel ho raha tha toh... Toh maine electrician se kaha ki wo bell ki wiring aise kar de ki jab bhi doorbell baje saare ghar ki lights flicker ho taaki Haya darwaza khol sake... Munisa aise mat dekho... Aisa kuch nahi hai jo tum soch hai ho...

Munisa: Accha tumhe kaise pata ki main kya soch rahi hoon?

Munisa smiled as she teased her baby brother. Rahat was irritated with her teasing but out of nowhere a deep touch of red adorned his cheeks. He pouted as she teased him more.

Rahat: Tumhaari smile mujhe bata rahi hai. Munisa aisa kuch bhi nahi hai...

Munisa: Kyun nahi hai Rahat? Aisa nahi hai toh aisa ho jaane do. Rahat tum ye khushiyaan deserve karte ho...

Rahat: Jo maine Naaz ke saath kiya uske baad main apne ghumon ke andhere deserve karta hoon Haya ki muskurahat ki ... uski mohabbat ki roshni nahi...

Rahat and Munisa joined Haya and Dilshad for the afternoon tea. Munisa felt ashamed in front of Dilshad but the latter's warm hand on her head made Munisa feel like she too now had someone to look after her. The loss of her mother which she went through at a very young age was somehow gone. Munisa had to grow up too early too fast, she took care of Rahat like her own child, after their mother's death, she was a mother to him but she had no one. Dilshad's care made her feel like she too had a mother. The Maulwi Sahib arrived. He suggested that Munisa should take some time and take into consideration the chances of reconciliation but Munisa was firm about her decision. Maulwi Sahib shared the information about how Munisa could get a divorce from Shaoib. Rahat asked him to approach Shoaib on Munisa's behalf and get the needful done. Maulwi sahib left.

Dilshad: Main halwa banakar lati hoon.

Rahat, Haya and Munisa stared at her. She understood their confusion.

Dilshad: Main jaanti hoon ki kisi bhi rishtey ka tootna koi acchi news nahi hoti, iss se zyaada takleef dene wali news aur koi nahi ho sakti iss waqt but iss takleef se zyaada humein is baat ki khushi hai ki iss ghar ki beti lautkar aayi hai, khud ko haarkaar nahi par apni zindagi ki ladaai ladkar aur jeetkar...

Haya and Rahat agreed with her. They had to celebrate Munisa's homecoming. Haya went to help Dilshad. Munisa observed Rahat as he stole glances of Haya. She was looking at Rahat and smiling. When Rahat looked at her raised her brows asking him what's going on. Rahat glared at her telling her to stop. She shook her head. If Rahat was not going to do something about Haya and him, she would. After all it was every sister's birth right to meddle in the brother's love life.

Sibling relationships, outlast marriages, survive the death of parents, resurface after quarrels that would sink any friendship. They flourish in a thousand incarnations of closeness and distance, warmth, loyalty and distrust.

In a few days Munisa's divorce came through. She was a free woman. She did not want to take the Haq Meher from Shoaib. She wanted nothing to with him or his money but Haya made her understand that it was her right. Shoaib had to be taught a lesson that he cannot ruin a woman's life and go scot free. The money that Munisa got from Shoaib she donated at an orphanage in the name of her deceased son, Zulfikar. Zulfikar, a premature child had been born with many complications. He passed on to the other world at the age of 3. Munisa used to go with Haya to the orphanage. She liked spending time with the kids. Haya had taught her that it was more important to give the children their time rather than just giving the authorities a monthly contribution. Seeing the smile on the children's face brought a smile to Munisa's face. She tried to find her child in them.

Munisa and Haya had come closer. Munisa knew that Haya was the best life partner Rahat would get and she knew that her brother though may not be the best Haya could get was a perfect partner for her. Munisa realized that Haya wanted to ask her about Rahat's past. One day they were returning from the orphanage...

Munisa: Haya tumhe Rahat se poochna chaiye...

Haya (Signs): Kya?

Munisa: Wohi jo tum mujhse poochna chahti ho... Rahat ke ateet ke baare mein Naaz ke baare mein... Haya Rahat uss baare mein kabhi koi baat nahi karta... Tum samjh sakti ho ki uske liye zaroori hai baat karna iss baare mein... Agar use aage badhna hai life mein uske guzre kal ko use peeche chodna hoga.

Haya understood what Munisa said and also she did not want Rahat to think that she was inquiring about her past. Rahat had to let go of that pain but on his own. Haya on every Sunday used to take special treats for the children of the orphanage. Dilshad and Munisa used to make some delicacies which the orphaned kids would not get at the orphanage. Rahat came out of his room and looked around.

Munisa: Rahat kya dhoondh rahe ho? Newspaper wo raha le lo...

Rahat: Nahi newspaper nahi wo...

Munisa: Oh accha! Mail dhoondh rahe ho? Rahat aaj Sunday hai aaj mail nahi aati...

Rahat: Main mail ko nahi female ko... Mera matlab hai Haya ko dhoondh raha hoon...

Munisa: Haya wo toh orphanage gayi hai.

Rahat: Akele?

Munisa: Haan Rahat. So what? Wo hafte mein teen baar wahaan jaati hai use pata hai kaise jaana hai...

Rahat: Wo toh mujhe bhi samajh mein aata hai ki use pata hai but Munisa tum nahi jaanti wo road par kaise carelessly chalti hai... Agar use kuch ho gaya toh?

Rahat took the car keys and drove to the orphanage. When he reached there he saw a very cute sight. Haya was playing blind man's bluff with the children. As if some magnetic force was pulling him towards her he walked towards her in a daze. She turned banged into him. She was about to trip but he caught her. She removed her blindfold and they had an intense eye lock. They came out of it feeling embarrassed as the children were giggling.

A boy: Bhaijaan ka turn... Baaji ne unhe out kiya.

A girl: Chup ek hi line mein dono ko bhaijaan aur baaji mat bolo... Bhaijaan aur bhabhi bolo ya baaji aaur jeeju bolo...

Haya was busy with another child si could not read the lips of the girl and understand what she had said. Rahat heard it and his heart filled with joy. A slight smile came to his lips. Haya saw it. It's nothing' he replied when she asked him about it. It was Rahat's den. The children wanted to play hide and seek so they began to play that. One after the other Rahat seeked out all the children but he did not find Haya anywhere. He was frantically searching for her calling out to her... It was of no use she would not be able to hear him. At that time even if a stranger saw Rahat, it would easily be understood by him/her that Rahat had feelings for Haya which were much more than friendship and care for another human being. Everybody began to look for Haya. She was nowhere to be found. Rahat in his mind went through the entire orphanage and he had double checked every corner. Suddenly it struck to him. There was one place which was left to search... There was a huge trunk in the storage room which was big enough for four people to hide in it. Rahat rushed to the storage room and opened the trunk and there she was ... He got her out of the trunk and brought her to the infirmary.

Rahat: Haya!!! Haya utho please Haya wake up. Haya please wake up... Tumhe kuch nahi ho sakta. Haya meri awaaz sun rahi ho? Haya please uth jaao. Agar tumhe kuch ho gaya toh main jee nahi paaoonga... Haya meri wajah se tum iss haal mein ho... Haya please ek aur jaan meri wajah se nahi jaa sakti... Main nahi bardaasht kar sakoonga... Mar jaaoonga iss guilt ke neeche dabkar... Haya please wake up mere liye...

Haya slowly opened her eyes and smiled at Rahat. She looked at the Hadiqa B the matron of the orphanage. They exchanged looks. Rahat was feeling suffocated so he came out to the yard. He saw that the children were scared so he smiled at them and gave them thumbs up. The kids rejoiced their baaji being well. Haya was with Hadiqa B, the matron of the orphanage.

Haya (Signs): Rahat ne kya kaha?

Hadiqa B (Signs): Rahat ne kaha ki wo ek aur maut ka guilt lekar nahi jee sakegenge... Haya wo bahut darr gaye the... Kyun kiya tumne ye sab?

Haya (Signs): Main Rahat ko isi guilt se bahar nikaalna chahti hoon... Mujhe yakeen hai ki wo kabhi kisi ko chot nahi de sakte toh kisi ki maut ke liye zimmedaar hona toh bahut door ki baat hai. Main jaakar unse baat karti hoon.

Haya searched for Rahat and found him sitting on a swing at the far end of the garden. It was a secluded spot just like Rahat liked them. Haya sat next to him.

Rahat: Haya agar tumhe kuch ho jaata toh...

Haya (Signs): Kuch hua toh nahi na?

Rahat: Haya tum itni careless kyun ho?

Haya (Signs): Main careless nahi hon aap kuch zyaada hi darr jaate hain.

Rahat: Tum bhi darti agar...

Haya (Signs): Agar kya?

Rahat: Haya kisi apne ko khone ka dard tum nahi jaanti... Nahi samjh sakti...

Haya (Signs): Really? Rahat maine apni ammi ko kho diya hai. Mere abbu kahan hain main nahi jaanti... Main iss dard ko jaanti bhi hoon aur samjhti bhi hoon.

Rahat: Haan par tumne unhe apni galti ke wajah se toh nahi khoya na?

Haya (Signs): Matlab?

Rahat: Haya tum jaanti ho na ki meri biwi Naaz ab iss duniya mein nahi hai... Par tum nahi jaanti ki uski maut ke liye main zimmedaar hoon. Ek raat hum ek party se wapas aa rahe the... Mausam kaafi kharaab tha aur main bhi bahut thaka hua tha ... Naaz ne kaha ki hum taxi le lete hain ya toh hum kisi hotel mein ruk jaate hain but main nahi mana. Bahut fakra tha mujhe apni driving skills par... Mera over confidence hi uski maut ki wajah ban gaya. Tez baarish ho rahi thi aur raasta geela tha... Saamne se truck aaya uski bright lights ne meri aankhon ko chaundhiya diya... Car skid ho gayi... Everything was dark Haya kuch dikhayi nahi diya sunayi di toh sirf Naaz ki cheekh aur phir dum todti hui siskiyaan. She died on the spot Haya. Iss liye main kabhi ki aur ko mere saath car mein nahi baithata. Main zimmedaar hoon Naaz ki ...

Haya covered Rahat's mouth with her hand. She stopped him from speaking further.

Haya (Signs): Rahat aap kaise zimmedaar hain unki maut ke. Wo ek accident tha... Aur uss accident mein aapki jaan bhi jaa sakti thi. Accident mein ek mar jaaye aur doosra zinda bach jaaye toh jo bach gaya wo zimmedaar nahi hota doosre ki maut ka. Rahat aapko kya lagta hai ki agar Naaz bach jaati toh wo aapko accident ka zimmdaar maanti? Nahi. Rahat accidents ho jate hain kiya nahi jaate aur accidents ke liye koi zimmedaar nahi hota.

Rahat was not convinced. She cupped his face in her hands and he saw in her eyes that she believed that he was not the reason behind Naaz's death. She wanted him to believe in it too and if he could not he had to believe in her belief. She made him understand that he had to come out of the guilt and live his life the way Naaz would have wanted him to. She told him that he leading a gloomy life is not making Naaz happy in fact he is hurting her. She took a promise from him that he would life to the fullest. One day at a time promised Rahat. They bid good bye to the children. That day for the first time in years someone sat in the car with Rahat that too on the front seat. Rahat was tensed all the way back home. Haya put her hand on his to assure him that she trusted him to take her back home safe and sound. When they pulled into the driveway of their home Haya smiled at him. Rahat too was relieved. Haya went in but Rahat stayed back in the car. He looked at Haya go into the house.

Rahat: Tumne mere liye bahut kuch kiya hai Haya ab meri baari hai. Main tumhaare liye kuch aisa karna chahta hoon jo tumhe zindagi bhar yaad rahe.

It has to be something special for someone special. He removed an envelope from the glove compartment...

Har pal tu hi hai khayaalon mein tumse milne ki aas hai...

Mujh se door sahi par tu mere dil ke paas hai...

Bahoth dekhe hai log par tu hi sabse khaas hai..

Tu mere khwabon mein aati hai ismein ek raaz hai..

Nayi nayi mulaaqaat hai abhi toh pyar ka aaghaaz hai..

Tujhe chahne laga hoon mere dilpar mujhe naaz hai...
