Spuja,
There is no real correlation between knowing a groom and the safety or happiness of the bride.

Let us take the case of phooli, gehna initially, etc.

At times one has to operate on a sixth sense.

@bold - I agree, and most of the people going for arranged marriage know this already, still the girl's parents (and even boy's parents) take care of collecting information relating to the boy and his family (girl and her family for boy's parents). What Gulli's grandparents done seems almost impossible in real life. Moreover, they did not felt guilty of hiding the truth - and BH people and Anandi-Shiv readily condoned their mistake, as if they had the right to hide the truth and groom's family had any obligation to marry Gulli.

I'm not sure why gullis grandparents would raise objections. Again, they feel he is related to shiv and anandi. So they feel safe. He wasn't some musician who walked into the wedding hall to play the shehnai at the wedding ...an unknown chappie..who stepped forward to marry gulli when the original groom walked out. 😆😆. He was living at badi haveli and introduced to them by dadisa. That is good enough in my book.
Yes he is from a foreign country, but what more could gullis illiterate and poor grandparents do? They can't go to America to verify his background nor can they hire a private investigator to track him.

They also know that now with this additional setback of wedding party walking out on top of gullis history and her rape victim status, they will not be able to find a good man to marry her easily.

There is nothing regressive about it.

As if marriage is ultimate goal - that is why I call this regressive. I am not against marriage or love marriage - the way it happened was wrong as per my opinion. May be different people think differently - I would not have married off my granddaughter like this, at least I would have tried to contact the parents, would have wanted to know what the prospective groom does for a living, would have liked to know his future plans - as of now it seems they will settle in KB - that is wrong because they are not Shakher's family.

It would only be regressive if gulli got married against her will. Since she agreed to it, it is her will, and therefore progressive. We should not invalidate her decision by calling her foolish.

Gulli had to agree, she was roaming with this man just two days before her marriage and was falling in love, giving those sad looks with all the people around (but nobody except the boy could see all this).

May be for some people - it is like mia bibi raaji then it is progressive. For me, it was like they wanted to show that Gulli/her grandparents/BH people/Shiv and Anandi everybody thought that Gulli has to be married immediately - this thinking looks regressive to me.
