Who's in it? Rupa Ganguly, Harsh Chayya, Mishal Raheja and Payal Sarkar

The story so far? In one line—it's a star-crossed violent love story in the Romeo-Juliet mode, set in contemporary Delhi. Akash (Mishal Raheja) is the typical brooding hero, perhaps carrying the burden of the upheaval in the lives of his parents ACP Rohit Saxena (Harsh Chayya) and Ritu (Rupa Ganguly), who are separated. From being a talented student once, he has slipped to being a backbencher and a goon, yet his rugged charm attracts the girls, especially his cute junior in college, Shruti (Payal Sarkar). They fall in love and hell breaks loose on Akash as Shruti's tauji (a local don and politician who had once been sent to jail by Rohit) and her brother Arjun (head of a rival gang in college) are always at loggerheads with Akash. The lovers elope, but Akash is hunted down and shot. As he lies fighting for his life in the hospital, the story takes off, oscillating between the present and the past, told through flashbacks. What's hot? Anurag Basu, of the Life in a…Metro fame, helms the show's directorial baton and brings in the sensibilities of his films to the soap's narrative. Love Story is racy, stylishly shot with frequent outdoors, (unlike the indoors-oriented set fixation of most dailies), totally does away with loud acting and mandatory zip-zap-zoom effects of TV drama and boasts of foot-tapping music by the band Cactus. It indeed has the look and feel of a film; you even see its lovers kissing occasionally (unthinkable on Indian TV as of now). Set in Delhi, it captures the city's police-politician nexus well, while the university milieu that frequently pops in the flashbacks looks authentic. Basu extracts fine performances from his lead pair—Mishal (he initially wanted to assist Basu in direction) and Payal. They look relatable and speak in a contemporary voice. Rupa Ganguly and Harsh Chayya pack in some empathetic acting moments as the independent, spirited and separated couple, who are brought together by their son's tragedy. What's not? The narrative style that keeps oscillating between the past and the present in every other scene may look chic as a film experiment, but its bound to confuse viewers missing out on an occasional episode or for those joining the show late. That's the only hitch that may limit its appeal to the really discerning viewers, whose numbers isn't enough to pep up the TRP metre to sustain a good show. Should you be watching it? Give it a go because Anurag Basu, who had given us some great acting moments in his previous telly series Koshish…Ek Aasha, shows ample promise of a repeat.
