Bobby Jasoos film review: Vidya Balan gets full points for this one!

Cast: Vidya Balan, Ali Fazal, Kiran Kumar, and Rajendra Gupta

Director: Samar Shaikh

This is a very special film. As a detective comedy-drama (gosh, doesn't that sound over-ambitious!) Bobby Jasoos is filled with furtive delights and the ambivalent aromas of a city and a heroine that never sleeps.

If the truth be told, and it's the truth that our endearing Hyderabadi Nancy Drew is drawn to " there are two heroes in Bobby Jasoos. One, of course, is Vidya Balan. But the other more surprising hero is the city of Hyderabad. You can almost feel the unrehearsed jostle of a city always in a celebratory mood, the colours and gaiety, and yes, the biryani.

Oh yes, there is a whole mouth-watering section devoted to biryani where our lady snoop takes her extended family hand-in-hand on an eating expedition.

So may I add another hero, cinematographer Vishal Sinha to the ravishing roster of achievers in this film about a female under-achiever trying to impress her father into finally giving her some desperately-needed attention and affection.

Vishal captures the bustle, jostle, aromas and attitudes of Hyderabad with the same affection of a non-tourist as he did when he shoot Raanjhanaa and Issaq in Varanasi. You can almost touch the city's skyline and then willingly dive right into our heroine's over-whelmed heart as it searches for all sorts of clues for what humans do to and in a city mired in mystery and intrigue.

Debutant director Samar Shaikh is as proficient in bringing us the sleepless city's endearing as well as unspeakable transgressions, as he is in showing Bilkis, alias Bobby's home life.

The protagonist's family life is constructed with the affectionate diligence of a carefully built brick-and-mortar Taj Mahal. In no time at all we know every member of Vidya's filmy family. That they are played by some superb actors, notably Tanve Azmi (as a busybody match-maker) and Rajendra Gupta (Vidya's father), is just such a stroke of luck for this genre-inventing Bollywood entertainer.

Bobby Jasoos is that colourful kaleidoscopic surge of vibrant drama and humour, which we tend to seek but seldom find in our cinema-viewing experience. It's got the kind of bouncy effervescent energy that somehow eludes today's cinema.

That Vidya plays the inept detective trying so hard to prove her worth to self and dad, is providential. With her impeccable coming timing, faultless dialogue delivery (the Hyderabadi was last spoken with such effortless seductiveness by Shabana Azmi in Ankur and Mandi) and eyes that don't only speak volumes, they chant reams of poetry on the hurt and healing process of existence, Vidya just nails her goofy free-spirited character.

This is her best performance to date. Yes, even better than Kahaani and certainly far superior to the over-rated over-sensationalized The Dirty Picture. In the title role she sparkles, shines and shimmers providing us with more proof her versatility.

The mystery that surrounds Bobby's cryptic client Kiran Kumar's assigments for missing persons provides a kind of conspicuous backdrop to Bobby's free-wheeling relationship with the world at large.

I carried home a wonderful father-daughter love story between Rajendra Gupta and Vidya. It's good to see commercial Hindi cinema acknowledging the father-child relationship.

Bobby Jasoos also left me with one of the most heartwarming romances in recent times. Bobby/Bilkis's brittle relationship with a television journalist Tssavur (Ali Fazal) grows in the plot with nurtured natural niftiness. Not for a minute does the relationship appear unreal or manipulated.

There is this lengthy wonderful episode in a narrow lane between Bobby and Tassavur where they discover their true feelings for one another.

This is the kind of romantic writing that cinema today sorely misses. And when was the last time we heard the Santoor playing in the background in a romantic sequence? Slow clap for Shantanu Moitra's thoughtful dreamy and fluent background music.

That Vidya is partnered on screen by the striking Ali just gives s dizzying spin to the narrative. Though the film belongs to Vidya, Ali makes his own space and owns his part with pride and confidence. Make no mistake - he is star material, probably Vidya's most confident co-star to date.

Bobby Jasoos works so well because it creates a unique yet relatable world for its female hero without making her seem super-vulnerable (like Kangana Ranaut in Queen') or super-confident (like Shabana Azmi in her best roles).

Bilkis/Bobby in her salwar-kameez, sneakers and various super disguises, is a fearless, unabashed bundle of bumbling energy. Her infectious gusto and irresistible joie de vivre envelope this biryani-flavoured Hyderbadi delight of a film.

Like Vidya's multiple disguises, the film's ability to surprise never flags. If Bobby/Bilkis revels in a sense of adventure the narration doesn't lag behind. You can find flaws here. But you won't hold them against the film. That's a guarantee.

Film review: Bobby Jasoos'

Balan proves she isn't a miracle worker with Bobby Jasoos'

Kahaani ruined it for Bollywood actress Vidya Balan. Now, don't get me wrong here. The suspense thriller " featuring the actress as a heavily pregnant woman in search of her missing husband " kept us hooked to the end and propelled us to set the bar high. So, if you are going to measure Balan's latest drama Bobby Jasoos, in which she plays an amateur 30-year-old detective, by that yardstick, the chances are that she's going to fall short, and by a considerable margin.

She plays Bilkis Ahmad, a Muslim girl in a patriarchal household in the Hyderabad town of Mogulpura, who dreams of becoming the top sleuth in her neighbourhood. She may remind you of a desi Nancy Drew " dressed in a salwar kameez, canvas shoes and a knapsack. She isn't armed with a degree in investigation but banks on her quick wit, intelligence and her burning desire to succeed when it comes to solving cases.

Enter the sinister-looking Anees Khan (Kiran Kumar) who throws money in her face to hunt down a couple of young women. In her rush to be taken seriously as a sleuth, she forgets to question her client's motives. The money keeps getting better and her final case involves searching for a young man with a missing toe. She's instructed sternly by Khan not to ask questions and just find the answers. As a viewer, I wish the movie had ended there since it was entertaining to watch an endearing Bobby in action. Unfortunately, no such luck.

After the interval, the film sinks south as Bobby forgets to keep her end of the bargain and begins snooping around her rich client's business. Balan has enough vivacity to keep us gripped, but she's no miracle worker and can't elevate a limp story to superlative standards.

The surprise package is Ali Fazal who plays Tasawur, an ambitious broadcast journalist who hires Bobby occasionally to thwart marriage proposals brought forward by his orthodox parents.

His struggle, whether to conform or to push against traditions, is sensitively portrayed. But he isn't alone in his identity crisis. The movie, which begins on a promising but languid note as a thriller set in a vibrant metropolis such as Hyderabad, morphs into a reluctant love story. Bobby gets side-tracked and the climax scenes, which should ideally be a crackling clincher to the mystery, come across as an afterthought. The suspense to the drama was so lame that we felt bad for the feisty Bobby and Balan: both deserved a riveting, gripping ending.

Bollywood review: 'Bobby Jasoos' pulls out interesting disguises

However, debutant director Samar Shaikh is unable to give her a worthy comeback after her thrilling act in Kahaani'

For those of us who've been ardent fans of Alexander McCall Smith's incredible tales of a chubby woman detective, who with her charm and goodwill sets out to make Bostwana a better place, debutant director Samar Shaikh's Indian version appears a tad unimaginative, painfully stretched and devoid of thrills.

While this isn't lifted from the famous detective series, you secretly wish it was.

For a movie that's being pitched as the story of Bollywood's first-ever woman detective, the basics appear unimportant. The investigation is cut short by Bollywood's staple romance, a family drama and soundtracks, diluting the impact immensely.

Just when our lady detective is about to crack a big case, she's suddenly transported to a rustic fort to romance a man who, we can't help notice, appears awkwardly mismatched.

Imagine watching Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi slip into a song midway during an investigation? Hopefully, filmmaker Sujoy Gosh, who had given Vidya her much-appreciated Kahaani' and is now working on giving the detective a Bollywood debut, wouldn't be governed by box-office statistics and would instead treat his character with a little more respect.

Writer Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh's story could have easily been cut down from two hours to 30 minutes, but producers Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha thought otherwise. A decision that would cost them dearly.

The hunt for a special biriyani and an audition for a TV actress drags on and on, leaving us thoroughly exhausted.

Sanyuktha, despite wanting to write her heroine a significant life, pulls her down with small-town clichs. Where an aged dad is worried about his unmarried 30-year-old daughter, even when she is busy chasing her dream and earning a hefty pay cheque. Good girls, he believes, must only get married, not earn a salary. Unfortunately, his grouchy mood doesn't disappear even when the girl agrees to do just that.

Where a couple, engaged to be married, are reprimanded because they were spotted together outside a hotel. The parents quickly decide to get them married earlier because it would mean their family names remain untarnished.

A romance between an unlikely pair evolves suddenly, much like most Bollywood romances. It's their age, however, that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Set in Hyderabad, Bobby Jasoos' is about a girl who chases her dream of being a detective. After being rejected by the town's big detective company, she sets about to set her own company. Armed with her loyal pals - the endearing Shetty and the earnest Munna, she scouts for opportunities to display her real talent.

After being bombarded with requests to find addresses of pretty girls and spy on husbands and best friends, she lands a real case. Only, the request is bizarre but the pay gratifying.

Bobby continues unquestioningly, and cracks each request in her charming way, and returns home with a bigger pay each time. Until one day when her conscience pricks and she retraces her steps to find the truth.

Vidya Balan is sincere as the robust Bobby, adopting her Hyderabadi twang as genuinely as a Bollywood actor would've possibly attempted. You can sense she has had a blast being Bobby. Unfortunately, a lazy edit and a plot that's not high on logic or thrills leaves her without much to do.

She's clearly on the lookout for a worthy comeback after two average performances in Shaadi Ke Side Effects' and Ghanchakkar'. Unfortunately, after her thrilling act in Kahaani', Bobby Jasoos' proves a let-down.
Few films old Ali Fazal is charming and a treat to watch. Unfortunately, Bobby hogs much of the spotlight, leaving him with little space to show his talent.

Yesteryears' baddie Kiran Kumar returns as the menacing Khan and packs a punch. His story, however, is hurried and ended without much thought.

The supporting cast is a mixed bag, with a handful of seasoned actors and a few fairly new faces. Zarina Wahab and Tanvi Azmi make an appearance, but aren't allowed much screen time. Fashion' star Arjan Bajwa gets more attention for his kohl-smeared eyes and less for his dialogues. And there's the pretty Anupriya Goenka, who we had hoped would get more attention.

While Bobby Jasoos' is a fair attempt at doing something different, it fails to leave an impression because it's unable to break-free from Bollywoocd stereotypes. But due credit must be given to costume designers Theia Tekchandaney and Sheetal Sharma for changing the way Bollywood looks at disguises. At least, wearing a wig or specs isn't the only way to look different.

Despite the hype, Bobby Jasoos' just doesn't make the cut. At least, not for us, especially since we cracked the case even before Bobby did.

This one was going to crash real bad from day one of the trailer. Why Oh why did she sign a Dia Mirza film in the first place? Hope Vidya doesn't lose Hamari Adhuri Kahani like Kareena lost Shuddhi after GTPM debacle.

Lets encourage the woman rather than pulling her down...
I hope everyone goes and watch the film, rather than staying back. When one doesn't shy away in watching crap masala Humshakal, one shouldn't shy away from watching this film on screen!
I will buy my tickets, hope you do... :/
