Dushmant-Shakuntala

Dushmant, The Son Of King Ilina And Queen Rathinara, Was Born In Puru's Dynasty. He Married The Gorgeous Shakuntala, Who Gave Him A Son Called Bharat.

Once King Dushmant Had Gone For Hunting. He Missed Out On The Deer, And It Fled. Tired And Thirsty, The King Started Searching For Shelter.

By The River Malini, The King Saw The Ashram Of Sage Kanva. The Beautiful Ashram Was Surrounded By Trees And Even The Carnivores Were Roaming With A Mute Air Of Reverence. King Went Closer. He Saw The Sages Busy In Meditation. But The King, Unable To Sustain The Pangs Of Hunger Anymore, He Went Towards The Main Hut, Decorated With Beautiful Pink-coloured Flowers. A Beautiful Fragrance Of Dhoop (Incense-sticks) Was Coming From Inside. It Was Those Which Was Used By The Ladies To Dry An Condition their Hair. The King Was Amazed. As Far As He Knew Sage Kanva Had Never Married ! However, He Decided To Take A Chance, "Is There Anyone Inside ?" He Asked.

On Hearing This Words, A Beautiful Lady Came Out. She Had sharp Features, And Big Eyes Outlined With Kajjal (Surma; Kohl). Her Long Black Mane Was Slightly Curled And Held By Another Almost Equally Beautiful Lady, Who Still Held The Incense Stick Beneath Her [The One Whose Hair Was Being Dried] Hair. "Oho Priya Leave My Hair ! It Has Already Dried . And yes, My Name Is Shakuntala, And She's My Friend Priya, I Mean, Priyamvada ! And Yes, Who Are You And What Do You Want From Us ? And See, How Careless She Is, My Hair Has Dried Up, And Look At Her..." "One Minute Please, Can I Just Have Something To Eat, And Only After That I Will Be Able To Decide How Careless Your Friend Is, And How Much Of A Chatterbox Are You." Said The King Thoroughly Exasperated. The Food Was Brought To Him Amidst A Series Of Giggles And Winks. The King Thought He Even Heard A Marriage Proposal From Someone Along With A Few Slaps From Their Swaying Plaits. The King Was Confused So As To This Was The Ashram Of An Ascetic Or The Ultimate Playground For Such Unruly Girls.

When Rishi Kanva Came To Know Of The Arrival Of The King, He [Kanva] Immediately Rushed To His [Dushmant's] Aid, As He [Kanva] Knew The Nature Of Shakuntala's Friends Very Well.

There, King Dushmant Was Rather Embarrassed He Had Not Been Able To Control His Hunger. Kanva Understood The Confusion Going On in The Mind Of The King, and Said, "Shakuntala Was Born Of Sage Vishwamitra, And The Shameless Nymph Menaka. Menaka Left Her By The River Malini To Be Devoured By The Shakun Birds (Eagles ?). But You Know, The Birds, Instead Of Killing Her, Sat Around Her And Protected Her And Only Moved When I Asked Them To. I Was Amazed By The Beauty of The Girl. Some Sort Of Strange Affection Took Over Me And I Brought Her To My Ashram, And Hired A Maid To Take Care Of Her Milk And Sorts. When She Grew Up, I Thought She Might Be Alone So I Adopted More And More Girls Who Are Now Grown Into Terrible Women, God Save Their Husbands, Though I'm Relieved That My Little Girl Shakuntala Is Still The Same." "A Little Too Much Same." Thought The King While He Said, "Thank You So Much For Clearing My Doubts. But I Am Truly Amazed ! Shakuns, Protecting A Human Baby ? Those Children Are Their Most Desired Food ? Surely Your Shakuntala Must Be A Goddess ! But, If You Don't Mind Can I Stay Here For The Night, Please ?"

"No No, Why Should I Mind ? You May Stay Here As Long As You Wish Your Honour !"

Next Morning The King Went To Shakuntala And Straightaway Asked For Her Hand. "Oh Sir, I Would Love To Be Your Wife, But I Am My Father's. Let Him Come And I'll Ask Him To Give Me To You !" Said The Simple Girl. "Why ? You Are No Slave, And According To The Vedas, Every Woman Has The Right To Choose Her Own Husband And Marry Him Only With The Consent Of Her Own Self. I Hope, You Have That ?" "Of Course I Have, But," Added Shakuntala Playfully, "You Have To Make My Son Your Successor Or Else I Won't Marry You !" "Only This ? I Am Ready ! Our Son, We'll Name Him Bharat, Will Be My Successor And Rule Over The Whole World And You Have My Word For It !" "Really ? Then Marry Me Just Now !!" Shakuntala Giggled.

Secretly, Their Marriage Was Over.

A Few Days Later, As They Sat By The River, With Shakuntala Laying Her Head On Dushmant's Shoulder, "Shakuntala, Actually, My Mother Has Already Planned My Marriage With Another Princess Called Lakshmana, And I Need To Deny The Proposal, Before I Take You Home With Me. So You Better Keep My Ring As A Sign Of Me, And As An Identity Of Our Child Dwelling Inside You." Shakuntala Sat Up With A Jerk, "What Do You Mean ? You Can't Leave Me Like This ?" "I Don't Want To, But I Have To Darling !"

Shakuntala Sat Alone For Hours Observing The Ring Thinking About Dushmant And Often Her Friends Had To Jerk Her To Bring Her Back To Life. At Last, Looking At Her Continuously Growing Belly, She At Last Made Up Her Mind To Tell Her Father Everything.

Rishi Kanva Was Furious, And He Scolded Shakuntala For The First Time In Her Life, But He Had To Stop Because Her Health Was Not So Good To Take In The First Scolding Of Her Life. He Said, "Okay, Whatever Is Done, Is Done. Now, It Is Not Good For The Married Woman To Stay Away From Her In-laws' House For A Long Time, So Tomorrow You Can Go To The King's Palace With A Few Of My Students."

The Student Escorted Shakuntala To The Palace But Left From The Door. Shakuntala Slowly Went Inside, And Was Amazed To See Man's Architecture, As All She Had Seen Was The Different Forms Of The Forest - Mother Nature's Architecture. She Was Then Escorted To The Court.

She Said With A Nervous Smile, "Swami, (Husband;Lord) Why Didn't You Come Back ? I Think You Had To Marry That Other Princess ? It's Okay I Don't Mind A Small Sister. But You Remember Your Promise ? Now That I'm Here, I'll See To The Coronation Of My Son. You Don't Worry About Kitchen..." "SHUT UP, WHAT NONSENSE ARE YOU BLABBERING !! I Remember No Shakuntala Or Any Kind Of Promise To Her !!" Stood Up The King, Shaking With Rage [Or Maybe Fear] He Remembered Everything, But Did Not Want Accept Her As His Other Wife Lakshmana Was Not Of A Kind That Stayed Quiet If Another Wife Emerged From The Thin Air.

Shakuntala Was Stunned, But Composed Herself In A Moment And Spoke, "Okay, Fine. I'm Going Back. Your Son Shall Be Named Bharat, And He Will Rule Over The Earth And Be The Creator Of Bhaarat [Present-day India], The Greatest Kingdom In The World. I Can Make Him Fit For That Without Your Help. I Will Return Only When He Is The Greatest Man On The Earth."

Suddenly, There Was A Thunderbolt Across The Clear Sky, And A Voice Boomed, "O King Dushmant, Shakuntala is Yours And So Is Her Son Bharat. Accept Them." Hearing This, The King Smiled At His Ministers, "I Was Testing Her, People, Or Else You Only Would Have Said That I Have Married An Unchaste Woman." King Dushmant Took In Shakuntala.

Their Son, Bharat's Lineage Has A History That is Written On The Pages Of History In Golden Letters.

Proteeti, havn't read the whole thing, just a small doubt - Isn't it Dushyanta? Not Dushmanta... I mean, mostly he is called Dushyanta, but if your version states otherwise? Maybe in Bengali its Dushmanta?
