Chapter-36:
Thirukkural: (Chapter-77; Poem-763)
What if a thousand unfriendly rats roar like the sea? They will die at the mere breath of the cobra.
-Thiruvalluvar.
I got that the figure on the bed was moving.
He said, "I knew you would come,"
"I didn't!" I returned and I did not like meeting him suddenly, but I had to deal with him, I knew.
He was shocked to hear a new voice.
"Who are you?" he demanded.
He thought the worst then, 'What, they found my place at last before the mission ended?'
'What he worried the most has occurred at last?'
He snapped a switch.
The room lit and I saw him closely.
"Oh, you!"
He greeted me as though I had intruded him that morning.
He got down from the cot.
I started the clich,
"You are under arrest! Put your hands where I can see them. Now!"
He obeyed at once and as he raised his right hand a gun came to view.
'Very well!', I thought.
He aimed the gun to my chest. It was like a mirror image except that he did the talking the whole time.
'I can use an extra hand here!', I thought.
"You are on time! I was going to kill her this morning," I raised an eyebrow.
"No wonder! Weakening the opponent is the first line in kidnapping and killing is the last line."
He was defying and was not going to stop at anything, I got at last.
He smiled and said,
"I must say you are lucky to die in harness. But you are not the only one for the medal today. First you! Then your-"
"Shut your gob!"
I snarled at him.
"Where is he?" he asked, ignoring me.
And as though to answer him, a bell jingled somewhere behind him suddenly.
I jumped literally at that.
"That must be him," he informed, not even blinking his eyes.
"Right, now before he comes," he released the safety lock then, "I-"
I heard a gunshot then and he lost the grip of the gun and shouted, "Oh!-"
I turned to see what it was.
A door opened and Arjun entered in.
'Now, that's what I call a dramatic entry!'
He entered in and growled, "What's going on here, Shree?"
That fellow could not hide the shock behind his thick beard.
"This is not a surprise to see you!" he said.
It was a pure face saving, I could say.
Arjun stood before him and swatted him.
It took another breath for Arjun to pull himself back from the edge.
"Except that swat, you know he did nothing literally. He has stopped me as well, when I reached that fellow,"
I was seething in the conference room.
"That bloody explained me how he did the kidnapping!"
Chottu and Ayesha were looking at me, but they could not say a word.
"Even after seeing Sakshi in the basement, in that condition, I don't understand how he could react like that!
"If I had a chance I could have torn that fellow then and there!
"When I saw her in the car, Oh God! It was heart-rending!"
"Maybe because it was Sakshi!"
Chottu said hoarsely.
"Oh, Maybe!" I said bitterly.
Ayesha went out without saying anything.
#
Arjun entered in.
"Are you guys ready?"
He asked as we stood and followed him to the questioning room.
Ayesha was there already.
I was about to sit outside with her when Arjun protested.
"Come in, Shree! Do the talking!"
"Sir!"
I entered in.
Chottu was there standing behind the suspect.
I expected Arjun would sit beside me, but he chose to stand in a distance.
I started, "Why did you do the kidnap?"
The man smiled at me affably and I had to check myself from slapping him hard in the face.
"You know well, it didn't go well!"
"Why did you kidnap her?"
I asked again, my voice rose.
He sighed as though he was tired of my questioning.
Chottu took a step forward and was stopped by Arjun's voice, "Chottu, stand back!" he warned him.
Chottu stopped helplessly.
Arjun came forward and took a seat beside me then.
"Shree, what we got at the airport?" he asked and caught me off-guard.
