Vidya Balan was on fire a couple of years. Post the humungous success of both THE DIRTY PICTURE and KAHAANI, she was the number one female star in Bollywood.
Things have changed quite a bit since then. Her next releases, GHANCHAKKAR and SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS, both failed at the box office. Stars like Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone have left her way behind in the box office race in the recent years.
The question on everyone's mind is, can Vidya Balan regain her lost glory with this week's release BOBBY JASOOS?
The film has generated interest in some due to her experimenting with many different looks in the film.
But here's the negative side. The film has almost zero buzz amongst the public, barring those few who may be interested.
The big problem for BOBBY JASOOS is its release date. Since around May onwards, there's been so many big and/or successful films that have released, such as HEROPANTI, HOLIDAY, HUMSHAKALS, and EK VILLAIN (which is still rocking the nation with its box office collections and will continue to do so). Even in the near future, there is HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA releasing, and then of course at the end of July, there is the eagerly anticipated Salman Khan starrer KICK releasing.
With so many big films that have released and are still releasing, the audience has/will be spending so money on the tickets of these films. So then, why would the audience be interested in paying to watch BOBBY JASOOS after spending all that money already on bigger films?
There really isn't much of an audience for BOBBY JASOOS. The youth will wait another week for the release of HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA to spend their time and money on. The whole nation will wait for KICK.
To be honest, BOBBY JASOOS may pull in a few females and families to watch the film, but that's about it!
I'm sure Vidya Balan will be appreciated for her performance in the film, but this film will not give her any boost at the box office.
The promos haven't really seemed to click with the audience, as the buzz of the film is very low. This factor, along with the fact that there is a box office hurricane going on right now named EK VILLAIN, and another film releasing this week that is more appealing to the youth (LEKAR HUM DIL DEEWANE), all will ensure that BOBBY JASOOS gets a very poor opening.
KAHAANI had a poor opening day after the huge success of THE DIRTY PICTURE, and therefore BOBBY JASOOS will get a very poor opening after Flops GHANCHAKKAR and SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS. The difference was that KAHAANI later became a huge success on the basis of tremendous word of mouth, but I don't think BOBBY JASOOS will get that same success.
My Box Office Predictions for BOBBY JASOOS:
Opening Day: 2 crores
Opening Weekend: 9 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 15 crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Flop
