When Orkut Buyukkoten designed this interactive site, little did he know that it would turn controversial across the globe in years to come. Google stumbled over Buyukkoten's genius, and decided to take it across the borders. This has resulted in Orkut being the number one interactive and social networking site today. This open forum has been a boon for zillions to meet their old pals and make new ones, to find jobs and life partners. On the flip side, the communities section of the site proved as a ventilator for all things viable and illegitimate. Be it adverting po*n or agitating against George Bush and his Iraq war or supporting 'I hate Clubs' for the actors they dislike, the political parties and the national heroes that a section thinks are overrated.

The site made headlines this week with the extreme ethnic right protesting and damaging cyber caf's in parts of the city where most kids surf on the net (not necessarily for Orkut). But that is not the case; the fact that liberties are taken and national figures are slandered is a valid concern. The ban on Orkut will change a lot of things forever; it will curtail freedom of speech and regulate civility in the society. However it's the World Wide Web and Orkut is one of the sites, there are million others catering to the same set of people who are keen to voice their feelings. We asked our telly stars whether they think that Orkut in India has become a menace and should be banned. Is freedom of speech to another level or is the issue just blown out of proportion by the right-winged to show who has the upper hand? Here is what they had to opine:

Shveta Slave :

First of all you can't ban a site. And secondly banning a site is not a solution: others will mushroom as the cyber world is infinite. And I don't see comments as problem. Even though I am not an Orkuttian, I understand that it is for personal chatting and is a platform you make friends. Again for certain offensive remarks the site can not be blocked.

I am a member of orkut. I agree that it is too public a space where no one has any privacy. At the same time, through orkut i got in touch with a lot of my school and college friends... i got to know where they are now, see pictures of their fiancees, spouses and in some cases even of their kids. I also got in touch with cousins and neighbours that i had lost touch with. I think it depends on what you are doing there and how you handle it.
As for communities, they can always find other spaces to flourish.

At the end of the day its our choise that matters the most..Some one has wisely said that you can only change ur self not the world...but on the other hand we should try to keep our socity clean...that can only be done by increasing the sense of Marality in people...but how can we do this...maybe by just being nice with everyone...

I am not a member in Orkut, but I know very well which kind of site it is, coz I heard alots about, alots of interfer in privacy which I feel is too dangerous, I would never ever be a member there INSHALLAH....
But I think people should know how to have limit for their privacy, and not share it with anyone, even if they are members there, they should learn how to respect others' privacy, and not interfer in it, and how to have a limit for their privacy, and never share it with anyone....

Thanks Allah that I am not a member in Orkut....

By the way, Ani, this article is from tellychakkar, and u r not allowed to post any article from tellychakkar or indiantelevision in IF anymore, u can give us only the information without posting the article, coz it's not allowed....

Its just that u penned down.I agree with every line.Though it has no privacy, i too met many people with whom i had almost lost contact. I dont think it shud be banned
