UMRAOJAAN is a mega super classic with a tragic ending and I would have hated it to be any other way. It is one of my all-time favorites.
Another one that had to end that certain sad way - JAANE BHI DO YAARON-
PARINDA also has a logical sequence of orchestrated events leading to triumph, yet tragedy.
Abhi mentioned few excellent movies with similar sad ending.
As long as the tragedy blends with the story line, I am all for it. (Priya mentioned the same- the movie and its ending should justify 3 hours spent)

In Ek dooje ke liye, the r*** was absolutely unnecessary IMHO. Dark is okay, but how dark and misfit, almost unjustified?
QSQT was tragic, but well-justified and a happy ending of union in a way.

Nice posts everyone.
