I have been watching the following three musical shows lately.
1. Indian Idol
2. SaReGaMaPa Challenge-2007
3. Amul Star Voice Of India
A common theme seems to emerge from these shows. Rudeness of a bunch of megalomaniac judges. Examples...
Indian Idol:
Anu Malik tries to pull a Simon Cowell but he does it in a very demeaning way. Comments like "Gaane nahi aata hai to kyon chale aatey ho"...."Kaan kyon kha rahe ho?" are frequently heard in angry tone. In one instance, I remember, during audition, one chhakka looking guy ran off with the yellow card (invite to Mumbai). He was livid and chased him out and started hurling abuses at that guy. When some participants tried to calm him down politely, he turned around.....livid at being asked to calm down.....pointed his fingers at those poor participants and said "SHUT UP.....HOW DARE YOU TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD DO"
SRGMP-C-07
Rudeness of Himmesh Reshammiya and VS towards participants is classic. Himmy shouting on the show "MUJHE ISKEY GHAR MEIN ROTI CHAHIYE...STRUGGLING NAHI"...Veshaal-Shekhar's partiality, their ongoing on-stage dramatized feud with Himmy and general nonsense comments from all judges including mahagurus don't do any good to boost the participants' morale.
ASVOI:
This takes the cake. Welcome to the mother of all rudeness, ladies and gentlemen. Many-a-many times we have seen personal comments being hurled at the participants by Aadesh and Abhijit. Alka seems to relish harassing any participant who dares sing a Sunidhi number. Participants have been harassed by being stopped in the middle of the song harshly and angrily by Aadesh and Abhijit. Most of the participants seem petrified at the prospect of being rudely and angrily addressed in front of thousands. These judges on one hand say..."Sing freely"...How do they expect the participants to sing freely when at the back of their mind, they always have this nagging fear of being demeaned in front of the live audience?
Question:
1. Is this rudeness ingrained into the psyches of judges?
2. Should they treat the participants differently or is it okay to treat average singers with such disdain?
3. What do these judges want to prove to the audience? Are they sending the righ message to the participants and audience?
4. Would they get the best from the participants by acting in the manner that they do right now?
5. Lastly, if there is one or 2 judge(s) across all competitions (the above 3 or any) that you would like to list as paragon of judging, who would that be and why?
