Are music directors the best judges?

Or are singer or lyricists better?

There's a lot of controversy going on now that MDs/composers make the best music show judges, even better than the singers.

In II3, we've seen JA saab disagree alot with two popular singers (Alisha and Udit) sometimes regarding sur, feeling, emotion, performance, pronunciation etc. In the auditions, it was the same case with Anu Malik having one opinion and Alisha (or Udit) another one.

I think music directors are better...
coz they are the persons who make a singer ready to sing their songs..they know exactly what they want from a singer..better than a singer judging another singer...

I think judging panel should be a mix of people connected to music world and that way a lyricist, music director and singers panel of Indian Idol is fitting. But when these people judge they also have personal opinion about contestants. Some like down to earth beahvior, some also like attitude. So they base their judgement also keep such things in mind. This just shows that no two people are same. So even if we have world's 2 best judges on the panel, I am sure they will have different views.

Now if a contestant is exceptionally good then all the judges are voluntarily going to give a standing ovation. It won't be forced. This time they will agree to each other too.

Anyone Be it lyrcist, singer, Music director: The criteria on what they are judging is important, any one of them can be a good judge as long as your judging criteria is strictly based on the individual performances i.e their singing.

Since you are trying to search an "Idol", other aspects will follow because once they will be open to the Gala round, The changes will come by itself..

i agree..i think Music Directors have a better say and also they are generally able to pick up faults n minuscule errors just by listening to someone, coz they know exactly wat it should sound like and wat they want from the singer

in the same respect, it does depend from person to person.. im sure some singers are great judges as well.. i find myself mainly agreeing with Javed ji and Udit N.. and i totally dont get Alisha's comments 😕😆

well it depends on that individual judge.

Alisha, according to my pov, is not at all a good judge. I dont what she judge and why.

Udit Narayn, he rarely has his own opinion. every time he tries to play safe. which is not always good.

Javed Sahab has full knowledge of what he is talking of. and I think, he is right when he objects. he was good in Fame Gurukul, that is why he came bak in Indian Idol.he was right when he said that as lyricist he should have the knowledge of sur and taal and leh, coz the song is based on it. so I am totally with Javed Sahab.

Sonu nigam not only sings, but has capability of making music too. and he is very well educated in the field he is in. So I am sure he is a good judge.

As for Music Directors. it again depends on that particular MD. none of them are perfect. Anu Malik is not the best MD in India.

i am totally convinced that being a good or bad judge is purely the person's individual sensibilities... it has nothing to do with whether it is a MD/composer or a singer or a lyricist or for that matter, a normal viewer... even a normal viewer with understanding of music can be a better judge than those celebs... javed makes a good judge coz he is a very sensible and learned man himself and does not make silly or biased comments... he is very fair in judgement... i also feel, every individual has their own persepective of judgement... they r all established people in their fields... i am sure they all understand sur and music... its just that their perspective might differ from ours... thats the whole idea of having 3-4 judges, else why not have just one judge...

I think that MD's have a slight advantage over singers and lyricists. As an MD, you have to know how to make your singer sing well, otherwise you'll bring out a song on a cd that isn't in sur. So that would be really weird.

Saying this, I don't think that MD's or singers are always right. If Javed saheb thought someone was singing besura, than he must have heard it somewhere.

I also believe that Javed saheb is very honest. I love that about him that he only pays attention to what is important.

I think they all know what they are talking about. And yeah everybody has it's own perspective, so that's why things are different sometimes.

But people are sometimes biased in their judgement. Say Alisha, she totally steps away from reality when it comes to judging Suhit. Udit Narayan always tries the middle way, so sometimes he is just not very objective. I think with Alisha she is very prone to get influenced by looks, so unconsciously it plays a role in her judgement. Then you have these things that you always like some people more than others. So with few contestants you like them the instant you see them and with other contestants you just don't like them without a good reason. This happens in real life too. And as judges you should try not to get influenced by it. And I see that for some judges this is really hard.

I think honesty and trying to be as objective as you can are the most important thing for a judge. If you have that, then no matter if you're an MD, lyricist or singer, you're always a good judge. And I also think that a mixed judging panel would be the perfect.
