Chapter 1a
Haya, the shy deaf and mute 22 year old orphaned child of Najma and Imran Qureshi left her home in Punjab which she had shared with her cousin Sanam and their grandmother, Dilshad. She travelled alone for hours to come to Bhopal where her cousin now worked and grandmother had come for her treatment. She had a strange unexplainable feeling the moment she stepped into the beautiful home where she would be a guest along with her grandmother, Dilshad. Though her welcome was not very pleasant something was there in that house which made her feel pleasant. Haya smiled at her badi ammi thinking that she was the reason. Haya was going with her grandmother to the room where she would live. She was looking at the beautiful interiors as it was something like she had never seen. Her eyes fell on the door of the room right opposite to hers. She saw a shadow in the dimly lit room.
Haya had begun to settle in her new room but terribly missed her cousin as they ever since their childhood has shared the same room. Dilshad is helping her unpack her things and place them in the almira. Haya was very much like her mother. She did not like to pack or unpack the luggage.
Haya (Signs): Badi ammi how are you feeling now? How was your surgery? Are you taking enough rest? How is Sanam? I am missing her terribly. Can we go and meet her?
Dilshad: Ya Allah! Ye ladki kitna bolti hai!!!
Haya read her lips and stared at her badi ammi as her eyes moistened at the cruel joke God had played on her. She was mute but she talked too much. Dilshad's eye moistened as she realized her mistake. She at once apologized to Haya. Haya folded her hands and pouted as her grandmother said sorry to her. Dilshad realized her other mistake, smiled on seeing Haya mock anger at her. She then held her ears and pecked Haya on the forehead. Haya once again asked about Sanam.
Dilshad: I will call her up and ask her when she can meet us. Bacche she has just joined the new job. She cannot take frequent leaves. She had been with me at the hospital for long hours.
Haya understood and agreed that Sanam needed to settle in her new job as she knew that it was very important to her and for the family especially to take care of Dilshad. Haya wanted to speak with her grandmother but just then Dilshad heard a scream. She ran out of the room and Haya followed her.
Dilshad: Munisa! Tum chillai kyun? What happened?
Munisa: Dilshad B main kya kahoon? I have invited a couple of friends for lunch. I was trying to remake the lip smacking and finger licking murg musullam you had made on your first night here. I cut my finger. What will I do now? I will be insulted in front of my friends. I will call them up and cancel the lunch.
Dilshad: Munisa. Tum fikar mat karo. Lunch cancel mat karo. Main hoon na I will make it.
Munisa: But Dilshad B you have not completely recuperated. No I can't let you.
Dilshad: Munisa it is ok. Mushkil waqt mein apne hi toh kaam aate hain.
Munisa: Par Dilshad B sirf murg musaallam nahi aur bhi cheezein hain that you will have to cook.
Haya could not hear what Munisa said but she knew how to read lips so she understood the long order Munisa gave Dilshad. She could not believe that Munisa wanted her grandmother work like her personal slave. She was about to oppose but Dilshad stopped her and agreed with Munisa. Munisa left emoting pain she was suffering because of a cut but as she turned she gave an evil smile of which Haya caught a glimpse. She knew the real Munisa as she had some mean things to her thinking as Haya could not hear she would not know her real self. Dilshad began to work and did not stop even when Haya offered to make the food. Dilshad politely told her that she would manage. Haya was not as good a cook as Sanam and Dilshad, she made magic with needle and thread while they made magic in the kitchen. Haya thought that there was something fishy behind Munisa's cut and her evil smile so she offered to take the first aid box to Munisa. When she came to Munisa's room she was shocked on seeing Munisa enjoying her beauty treatment. She had applied face pack and her hands dipped in a bowl of water. Haya realized that that woman was pure evil. She left all the hard work to Dilshad and she was having a self pampering session. An angry and hurt Haya came to Dilshad.
Haya (Signs): Badi ammi! Badi ammi! She lied. She is not hurt. She faked it so that you could do the work for her. Badi ammi leave it I will not let you make the food.
Haya did not like her grandmother being treated in this manner just because she was living at a relative's place. Was this the way you treat guests or people who come to you in time of need? Dilshad did not listen to Haya which upset her. She stood there with her hands at her waist. Dilshad was busy with her work when she suddenly looked up. Haya looked in the direction Dilshad was looking. She looked in that direction and saw a man she had never seen before. The man too looked at her. He had not seen her before in the house so was keenly looking at her. Haya felt his gaze pierce through her. She became self conscious in the presence of a stranger. Feeling shy she hid behind Dilshad. Haya still was looking directly into his eyes. He looked away. Then he looked in Dilshad's direction avoiding Haya's eyes.
Rahat: Can I get a cup of tea?
Dilshad: Haan.
Rahat went back to his room. Haya was angry at herself for staring at the stranger. She had never done so in her entire life. What was wrong with her? How could she? And why was she gazing at him? She then remembered his words.
Haya(Signs): Badi ammi that man he is so badtameez. Aapko chai ka order diya. He did not even say please'.
Dilshad: Haya Haya what is wrong with you girl? Jabse aai ho gussa ho rahi ho. First you were angry with Munisa and now Rahat. Bacche itna gussa nahi karte. Here take this tea and give it to Rahat. Please. If you will not go I will have to.
Haya took the hot tea and she knocked on Rahat's bedroom door.
Rahat: Come in.
Haya knocked once more.
Rahat: Come in.
Haya knocked loudly the third time.
Rahat: Come in!!!
Haya was now miffed with the badtameez man. She was knocking on his door and he was not even opening the door. She was not knocking for time pass. He wanted the tea and she was there to give it to him. She turned to go back. Just then the door opened.
Rahat: Chai do.
He saw that Haya did not turn when he asked for tea. He tapped on her shoulder. A startled Haya turned and spilled the tea on Rahat's tidy white kurta.
Rahat: I asked for the tea for myself and not for my kurta. Get me another one my head is aching. I am going to change. Chai mere room mein rakh dena.
Haya walked towards the kitchen thinking that Rahat was too rude. The second time he asked for tea but did not say please. Rahat looked at the tea spilled near the threshold of his room and his dirty kurta. He too thought that Haya was badtameez as she did not apologize for her mistakes.
