Centuries ago, these weapons were prepared by mantras
Mentioned in the Hindu religious scriptures, whether it is the war between Rama and Raavan or Krishna killing Kans or the war of Kurukshetra, all the heroes involved here have taught to work till you live and protect your religion, which shows the entire mankind to live life with peace and make it successful.
The weapons these great warriors used were dangerous and made after special japs and mantras making them strong enough to kill their enemies. If we concentrate on what has been mentioned in the scriptures, these weapons made from mantras were so powerful that today's weapon will prove to be useless in front of them.
Though many people believe that the capabilities of these weapons used by the warriors is an exaggerated description, but in this era of science and new technology, the newly designed lethal and deadly weapons prove that the weapons used earlier by Rama, Krishna and others must have been something out of the world and impossible to make now.
The age-old weapons used during the wars earlier can be divided into two parts -
Astra: These weapons were those which were thrown on the enemy from far away after chanting mantras. These weapons could attack the enemy with ranis, fire, electricity, gas or mechanical measures.
Shastra: The second type of weapons used to be carried in hands. The attack of these weapons was so devastating that the enemy's death was sure shot.
Brahmastra - It is considered to be the weapon of Brahma. It was the most lethal and deadly weapon, which would destroy the enemy in seconds. This weapon could only be failed by other brahmastras.
If we compare brahmastra with today's weapons, its strength would be more than several atomic bombs put together. According to the Ramayana, Meghnad had used brahmastra on Hanuman.
Pashupat Astra - This is considered to be Shiva's weapon. The power and energy generated by this weapon at once could destroy the whole world. It is believed that during the war of Kurukshetra, Only Arjun had this weapon.
Narayanastra - This weapon is also known to be Vishnu's weapon. It is believed that once this weapon is released, no other weapon can cut it. There is only one way to save from this weapon and that is to stand without weapons and surrender.
Aagneya Astra - This weapon was an arrow prepared by the mantra that when shot would start with a bang and shower of fire and would turn the enemies into ashes in seconds. It was possible to cut this arrow with only Parganya arrow.
Parganya Astra - The arrow prepared by the mantra can create rains without clouds, thunder, lightning storm, etc.
Pannag Astra - This weapon created snakes, which kill the enemies with poison. This weapon can only be cut by Garuda Astra.
Garuda Astra - This weapon create Garuda (eagles) that can kill the snakes.
Vayvya Astra - When shot, this weapon creates strong winds and severe storm that makes the whole atmosphere dark.
Gada - Long up to chest with a thin arm, the Gada has maximum weight on its lower part. The total weight of this Shastra is about 20 tonnes. The Gada was used by warriors like Balarama, Bhima and Duryodhana.
Asi - It is the name of a sword. Made of metal it is a very sharp weapon.
Trishul - The lower part of the weapon is thin and the upper part has three arrows.
Vajra - The three upper parts are of no shape and the central part of this weapon is heavy and thin.
Parshu - It is about 2 yards long. It is also famous as a weapon of Lord Parasurama.
Chandrahas - It is also called as sword.
Chakra - A round thorny weapon made of iron and thrown on enemies.
Shakti - The blue weapon thrown with both hands is extremely heavy.
Tomar - It is an arrow-shaped iron weapon. Its mouth is like a snake made of iron, but the bottom is thin and made of wood.
Baan - These are of many sizes and known as arrow, Saik, etc.
Dhanush - The main weapon used for an arrow.
Addition: (this artilce didn't have Nagastra )
Nagastra - The weapon would have an inerring aim and take on the form of a snake, proving deadly upon impact. Used by Karna against Arjuna.
PS: maybe our āļøCvs might pick up some terminology from here ... or will we get some new terminology on āļøbharat ... guess we will have to be tuned in to figure out š
