Wow, what a beautiful post 👏.
Okay, now I have two things to say and they both are very different from each other.
Firstly, I am not defending Ekta, but the truth is she makes these shows for the lower middle class of society(and I am not saying they don't notice the bloopers or don't have the same understanding as us) but there is a reason they watch them giving them high TRP, and I will tell you why they are popular with them despite all things wrong shown.
Movie tickets in india, I am not sure the exact price, but I am pretty sure they are atleast 100 Rupees a ticket, hence the lower middle class family can't all really afford it.
English tv shows on cable, a lot of them they do not understand and is not something they will consider entertaining.
What is left? Ekta's shows, they have everything, they have the romance, the drama, the big sets, the glamorous costumes, even the item numbers, often times her shows have exact same scenes from movies, which frustrates all of us b/c we have seen these movies, and we say she lacks creativity. However, the people who can't afford these movies, enjoy such scenes, and get entertained.
Ekta's main character ALWAYS comes from a lower middle class family, who somehow gets her life entangled with the lives of the rich and famous. Now, many lower middle class women, will find it entertaining, b/c it is life they can dream about, fantasize about, and also seeing how miserable lives of rich people eventually get, may even make them thankful for their own simpler lives.
If you will have noticed, ever since Ekta's shows came on the market, Indian movies have also become a lot better, quality wise, like more subject focused. Look at 2006 for example, movies like Rang de basanti, Lage raho munna bhai, Dor and the list goes on. Since now the melodrama, rona-dhona, sing-song, fairy tale romances is all being delivered on the small screen, people do not need bollywood to provide that anymore, bollywood movies are venturing out into newer subjects, breaking away from cliches and churning up a lot more creative and inovative movies because now all the classic melodrama that the indian audience love is being delivered by TV.
Now coming back to my second point about Ekta's shows and the message she is putting out.
I totally agree with you it is very wrong what she shows, concering affairs, marriages, and evil people winning. Especially in the name of "Balaji". I think she does need to go back and re-think a lot of her storylines!!! Looking at other Zee shows, I do feel some positivity though, as they show evil however they balance it out with good, look at Saloni, a new issue comes up but it gets solved, Dulhan, Maayka, all of them have a good balance. And like you said a show that makes you angry and frustrated is not entertainment! Even the audience that once immensely loved Ekta's shows is now getting fed up and turning to other shows, hence Zee closing in on Star. Even the lower middle class wants entertainment, that Ekta used to deliver at one point, but now she has become so sure of her one formula that I think she has forgotten the main goal of entertainment. When Ekta started she had no competition, but now there is so much competition, if she does not rethink her shows and reinvent, it will be difficult for her to keep her shows going...
After all it is a law of nature...What goes up must come down!
In the End, like Gandhiji said: "Be the change you want to see in the world!" If you believe Ekta is showing wrong things, shut the TV off, she will eventually get the message! And by shutting the TV off you will not only be getting the message to her, but also saving energy that will benefit our earth 😉
That was a long post, but your post was so beautifully written 👏 I could not help myself. But I have to say, don't challenge Ekta to change her storylines, challenge yourself to not watch her shows in the hopes that one day everything will get better, b/c watching them day after day despite the frustration will not get the message to her, it will just reinforce to her that her formula of stretching and dragging the storyline as much as possible does work by keeping the audience glued on...😊 ...Just take the remote and press the power button 😊
