As far as I have read I guess Bhim was leader on the first day. The day was disastrous because of Bhism. Then on the advice of Lord Krishna Yudi made Dhrishtadyumna as Senapati.

Dhrishtadyumna was the Senadhipati from the very first day.

Archana.nac is correct. Dhrishtadyumna was senapati from day 1 right until the midnight massacre on day 18. Had no predecessors or successors.


Shikhandi was one of the 7 commanders of the akshaunis. The 7 were:

1. Dhrishtadyumna himself
2. Satyaki
   
3. Drupada
4. Virata
5. Shikhandi
6. Dhrishtaketu
7. Sahadev (of Magadha)

None of the Pandavas - Bhima or Arjun - commanded any akshauni. How could they - they didn't have any army of their own, as Indraprastha's army was a part of Hastinapur's. Arjun did lead at the front of the vyuha every day, but the commander was Dhrishtadyumna, not he.

I've always wondered why Dhrishtadyumna was given this honor, when he was no match not only for Drona, but also for Ashwi & Kripacharya. Since the Pandavas weren't gonna command the army, that honor should have been given to Satyaki.
