Saif Ali Khan has opted out of Karan Johar's film, saying has prior commitments

Amicable Parting: Saif Ali Khan and Karan Johar
Saif Ali Khan has opted out of debutant director Tarun Mansukhani's untitled film, being produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.

The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, and will go on floors in mid-2007.

The buzz is that Saif opted out of the film because he felt his role wasn't meaty enough in comparison to Abhishek and Aishwarya.

Amicable decision

But Saif prefers to shrug off the rumours. He says, "It's true that I am not doing Tarun's film. I don't have the dates and there is nothing more to it than that.

I am currently shooting for Abbas-Mastan's Race (starring Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu and Sameera Reddy) after which I will start two Yashraj films – Victor's Tashan (with Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor) and Kunal Kohli's untitled next (with Rani Mukherji)."

Karan Johar adds, "Saif had a date issue which is why he opted out of Tarun's film. He is doing Kunal's (Kohli) film around the same time. Tarun's film will start by October. It's an extensive, non-stop schedule.

The dates of both films were clashing and Saif had a prior commitment to Kunal. Saif is a very dear friend and it was an amicable decision. In fact, I have another script with another director, which we are working on, and I would like Saif to act in that. We share a great rapport."

Who's next?

Karan explains he would love to work with his friends in his films but it is not possible due to busy schedules.

"Sometimes it doesn't work out that way. Dharma Productions is on a roll and we need to bring out at least 2-3 films in a year to keep the company moving ahead. This will be Dharma's next film after KANK.

Tarun is the brightest director from Dharma. Nikhil Advani and Tarun joined us when we were making Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and have been with me since then.

Apart from being very talented, he's also extremely loyal. We are looking forward to launch his film," says Karan. So who will replace Saif? "We're on the look out and should finalise that in the next couple of days," adds Johar.
