Enchanted Silence

Bheegi bheegi raaton mein

The melodious track was continuing its rhythm and Arnav was trying hard to steer his jeep in the direction towards the venue. The path ahead was nothing short of a dirt track however that was not the cause of concern for Arnav. The object of his attention rather distraction was this woman seated beside him.

Meeting Khushi after so many years that too in this Forest Reserve was something that he had never imagined even in his wildest aspirations. And now that she was here all his memories kept coming back.The very first time he had seen Khushi he had felt this incredible pull towards her, something which he himself did not want to acknowledge at the time but she had become a lasting fixture in his memory and spirit. And today she was right here and the silence between them was distressing his senses.

Just as Arnav was about to steer his jeep towards Gate No1 where the cafeteria was converted into a makeshift dinner hall he caught some lights at a space. It was half past 8 already and this portion of the park was closed to any tourists.This could stand for only one thing and Arnav without giving it a second thought, halted his jeep and dimmed the headlights wanting to wait it out.

Picking up the jeep slowly come to a stop Khushi first thought that they had arrived at the venue, however getting a quick glance around she saw nothing but an eerie quiet.

"Why have you stopped like this here in the middle of the forest? " Exclaimed a slightly exasperated Khushi.

"Shh..." Arnav did not want to alert or scare Khushi so did not bother to express his suspicion.

"I will be back in a moment. Don't you dare step down from this vehicle", was all he offered before stepping down and moving away into the woods.

Khushi tried to calm herself after being subjugated to his highhandedness but nothing appeared to function and she eventually decided to follow Arnav. She had learned about the illegal activities from Joy and felt herself obligated to ascertain out what was bumping about the Reserve.

Arnav tried to pursue the way from where he could see some brightness emerging through the tall majestic trees lining up his vision. He attempted to walk with light feet not wanting to alert the trespassers if any. After walking for a twosome of minutes he heard sounds... and after closer inspection, he saw there were a group of men who in all probability were armed. He understood that he would be putting on the line not just himself, but also Khushi if he were to face up this gang all by himself and then he determined to maneuver back and get Khushi at a safe place first.

Khushi was beginning to get scared now... she was unable to spot Arnav, it was really dark with the moonlight barely seeping through the trees and the noises of the diverse insects in the vicinity were creeping her out.

Arnav reached the jeep in no time and on not finding Khushi anywhere his entire body started to rock with an unsound fear! She truly couldn't have gone that far thought Arnav and tried to find his way towards Khushi hoping that she would be away from any risk.

A couple of minutes had passed and Khushi was sure that she was lost.. That's when she picked up some people in hush voices and thanking the almighty she was about to scream for help when she felt a sort of strong arm across her chest from behind and another clamping her mouth shut instead.Even before she could conceive of placing up a fight, she saw it was Arnav and with that realization came anger.

"Not a word, ". Came his harsh whisper right near the hollow of her ear. And with that he started to back her slowly lest they are visible to the gang of smugglers. He had got themselves cornered behind some great shrubs and hoped to slide out in the dead of the nighttime.Khushi On the other hand had become cognizant of their position held up against each other. Arnav's arm was diagonally across her breasts and his warm breath fanning her ears. She should have been scared, but on the contrary felt safe and secured cocooned in his arms. He pulled her closer and anchored her against him. The voices seemed to fade away until they could hear nothing but their own heart beats which were almost competing with each other. Khushi felt Arnav slowly easing out on his hold and just as she was about to step away he roughly turned her pulling her to himself with such force that her breasts were crushed against his muscular chest. He slid a hand down over the curve of her hip and brought her body into full contact with his. The feel of his strong body against her made her shudder, remembering one such encounter ages ago.

"Are you f**king crazy?" Hissed Arnav uncaring about his strong hold on Khushi. "Which part of do not step out of the vehicle was unclear to you... answer me dammit!!" Arnav was livid and beyond caring now. Even though Khushi had realized her mistake hearing Arnav scream shook something deep inside and she snapped back at him.

"Don't you dare tell me what I should do... It's not like you even care Arnav. You never have and you never will!!" Responded Khushi.

"Like hell you know that." spat Arnav. The tension between them had been simmering for a while and Khushi's words were just like adding fuel to the fire.

"Leave me Arnav" In no way would she allow him to make her feel vulnerable once again.

"And if I don't?" Arnav knew he was behaving like a brat, but being around Khushi was always playing havoc with his brains and he seemed to lose his sense of bearing.

"What is wrong with you, are you upset that I put your life in danger or was it something else. Tell me Arnav what were you trying to hide from me?? There were some people back there right... I know I heard those voices. Obviously you heard them too" And just like that the wheels in her brain took motion. Before she could voice out her apprehensions she felt a few droplets of water on her face and looked up... the night sky, which was sparkling with twinkling stars when they had started out now looked like a forbidden ball of ash laden clouds ready to burst open the dam. At that very moment Arnav roughly tugged at her hand and pulled her along.

"We need to get back!" said Arnav as he drew her along with him.

Though they swiftly went back , by the time they reached the jeep both Arnav and Khushi had gotten a little wet. As Arnav pulled open the door to let Khushi in he almost let out a gasp seeing the vision in front of him. Khushi's kurta had wet patches on the front and the soiled cloth was plastered to her body detailing out what lay beneath those layers. Arnav could not help himself but stare at her beautiful form. Khushi could feel his gaze on her which was burning her skin. And when he pulled open the door for her, she was compelled to look up and the minute their eyes met all she saw was naked desire in them. Arnav was steadfast staring at the drops landing on her face, dribbling down her long neck forming a furrow of the stream which he needed to lick dry with his own sinful mouth. As his gaze went lower he felt his own arousal growing in joy. The discomfort he felt down below was like an electricity jolt which shook him off the dangerous territory his thoughts were running into and he finally wrenched out.

Khushi took this opportunity and seated herself in the jeep. The next couple of minutes went by quickly when both were immersed in their own thoughts and soon they reached the dinner hall. Khushi all but ran into the hall where the party was arranged without as much as a single glance back. She was a tad bit uncomfortable in the wet kurta but really had no option but to let it air dry.

Once at the party both Arnav and Khushi kept a distance from each other, though their eyes kept clashing every now and then. Khushi was waiting in the queue at the buffet table when she felt a tap on her shoulders. She turned around to see a friendly face.

" Hello Aman, I was wondering when I would meet you since the time I have arrived here. You are one busy man!" Chirped Khushi.

"Please don't embarrass me Khushi, hope your accommodation is comfortable and do let me know if you need anything". Said Aman.

As the queue moved ahead both Aman and Khushi were engaged in a friendly banter, however Arnav whose eyes had never left Khushi's form was left seething seeing her talking so animatedly with Aman where as with him she always retreated like a touch me not flower.

Soon the guests started to disperse and Khushi too wanted to head back. At that very moment she spotted Joy, who had arrived at the party with Aman, she went up to him to discreetly ask him if she could ride back with them instead of Arnav who seemed to be busy with a group of officials. They were holed up together and Khushi thought that perhaps he was partaking in what he saw in the woods with them, she tried straining her ears to catch up with the conversation but all she could hear was them talking over the IPL tournament.

She was left wondering as to why Arnav did not bring up the forest encounter but decided to let it be for the time being thinking that maybe this was not really the right place or time for that discussion.

When Aman heard Khushi asking for a ride he politely declined, saying that he had offered to take back the groom's parents to their quarters. And even though she knew Shyam Jha was around and if she asked he would certainly offer her a ride ever since Joy had brought up his doubts against that man Khushi herself started to sense negative vibes about him which left her with no choice but to travel back with Arnav.

Arnav on the other hand was irritated by Khushi's ignorance, but he also knew on what grounds would he seek her out. That right was given up ages ago and that too willingly. So instead he sat at the small makeshift bar, nursing a drink. His mind went back to the time he had kissed Khushi in an instant of weakness and her response had made him realize her intentions as well. However, he also knew his very own stupidity when he had broken her heart, which at that time he felt was the right thing to do. He was still in college struggling to get a scholarship so that he wouldn't have to bow down in front of his father who was completely against his only son wanting to establish a career living in the jungles. Yes, that's what Avinash Raizada thought his son was enduring to do after graduating from the Forest Reserve College. To him that was simply a waste of time and fortune when all Arnav had to do was join the family business. The constant conflicts between father and son had completely bogged down Arnav and that's when he distanced himself from her without as much as a single word. Khushi on her part had tried to talk to him a couple of times, but he always excused himself, mentioning that he was very busy with his projects and one day when she had called him, he barely spoke a full sentence, replying only in monosyllables and his aloofness finally got to her. She felt that clearly the kiss had meant nothing to him and her self respect was more significant to her than a silly little crush.

His musings were suddenly interrupted when Khushi came and stood next to him, glancing at her watch and then looking at him.

Clearly she was in no mood to break the ice,

Arnav let out a breath and got up from his seat.

" So I guess your efforts in getting away were really fruitless", came a haughty remark from Arnav.

Khushi just looked at Arnav with such an emptiness in her eyes that he felt foolish for riling her up, and just lead the way out toward the jeep.

Once they were on their way, no words were exchanged between the two, and Arnav was again left wondering how things would have turned out if he had not let her go. If only he would have had the courage to stand for the things he believed in. One thing he was sure of though clearly the number of years between them had not diminished his feelings.

The silence was cutting through and he decided to switch on the radio...

So as you all know this is the very first time (and in all probability last) i am posting as an author and not just a reader , incredibly nervous about it.
