The Pirates (POC 3) are coming to India on June 1st
Walt Disney Pictures' blockbuster hit 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' continued on a wave of unprecedented success at the global box office over the weekend, and is poised to have the biggest worldwide opening of all time, it was announced by Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Marketing and Distribution.
Opening in more screens (11,000-plus) and theaters (4,362), than any picture before it, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' is expected to shatter the Memorial Day weekend record on Monday, eclipsing X-Men: The Last Stand's $122.9 million four-day start last year. This year the Memorial Day weekend in the US is May 25 – 28, 2007.
The film's weekend gross through Sunday is estimated to be $126.5 million, with the Monday Memorial day holiday still to come. It is the Studio's 53rd film to reach the $100 million plateau, which is unprecedented in the industry.
POC 3's International Box-office Record:
At the international box office 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' is on track to gross a record-setting $205.5 million through Sunday from 17,500 screens in 102 territories, and has already become the Studio's 54th release to join the $100 million club.
So dominant was 'At World's End' that it finished No. 1 everywhere, hauling in a 70% to 85% market share in each of the 102 territories where it played.
Biggest markets for 'At World's End' were
The U.K. (an estimated $25.8 million from 1,250 screens),
Germany ($16.9 million from 1,585 sites),
France ($16.7 million from 620 locations) and
Japan ($15.7 million from 883 situations).
Opening records were set in Korea (an estimated $19.6 million from 623 locations) and
Russia ($13.7 million from 700 spots).
POC 3 dominates Global Box-office:
Combined with the domestic total of $126.5 million and the international total of $ 205.5 million, the worldwide total as of Sunday had hit $332 million after five days, becoming the # 1 film not only in the US but across the world, a rare phenomenon.
'At World's End' still has two other markets to open -- India on June 1 and China on June 10. Looks like Captain Jack Sparrow is all set to dominate the global box-office including India.
Commenting on the announcement, Zoradi said, 'Audiences all over the world are clearly having a blast with this latest 'Pirates' adventure and we're thrilled to report that the film is on track to have the biggest worldwide opening in movie history. From every corner of the world, the film is playing like gangbusters, and we think that this enthusiasm and good will is going to continue for a long time to come.'

This weekend theatres across India will be stocking up on popcorn, soda, and candy in anticipation of record crowds that would be at the theatres to see the Johnny Depp starrer 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' (aka POC 3), which bows on June 1st 2007 with more than 300 prints in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English.
The brand 'Pirates of the Caribbean' has earned a sizable following in India with strong reviews / word of mouth cutting across all SECs and spreading to the general public. A well established character in Jack Sparrow and new characters - the leading Asian Superstar Chow Yun Fat and the legendary rock star from Rolling Stones Keith Richards - will ensure the old faithful return along with a crop of new audiences.
A huge female appeal for any action movie franchise is more than welcome – Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom being the primary contributors, will certainly make this the hottest date movie for the summer.
Further, with a UA rating, this one will bring in everyone in the family and with the summer holidays on, there will be plenty of time for people to eventually find a showtime that's not sold out.
