In dino Soham is creating a Dhoom

Soham Chakrabarthy tells Zinia Sen that he is not aware of the similarity between his song In dino and the Pakistani number Do dilon ki ijazat

Every budding singer today is ready to give an arm to be a part of a talent hunt. But you were actually asked to participate...

• I had won an episode of Meri Awaaz Suno. So, when the producers of SaReGaMa needed someone to sing with Sonu Nigam during a special Diwali shoot, all I needed was to appear for a short auditioning. It was an impressive show and next I was asked to take part in SaReGaMa.
Was it smoothsailing since the win?

• It wasn't, actually. The
prize money was Rs 1 lakh. With this money I came to Mumbai and was given 15 days' time by my family who asked me to try my luck. The standard of living is high in Mumbai and I had to literally survive on vada pao and couldn't crave for more than a l'il butter on rice. Priyo Chattopadhyay, who liked my voice in SaReGaMa, got me introduced to a music label. Next, I was offered to sing for a Marathi album, the first volume of which was sung by Sonu Nigam. Something had happened then for which Sonu refused the second album. I was always good in mimicry and it was thought that I would be able to do a fill in for
him. But
not everyone was happy about the idea of this project being given away to a Bengali boy. In fact, when I couldn't pronounce a word correctly, one person from the studio told me during the dubbing — 'Yeh to mera tota bhi bol deta.' I kept mum then but the album went on be a big hit and the third volume followed. Since then, I've sung in 13 languages, that also included songs for a Bengali film that starred Victor Banerjee.
Are you riding piggyback on your mimicry skills?

• Not any more. Initially to survive in Mumbai, I had to make use of my skills in mimicry, but now my songs are my own.
How did Dhoom 2 happen?

• I had become pally with Pritamda, who's a great mentor. When he was doing music for Dhoom, Aditya Chopra auditioned me for Dilbara. Though he liked my voice, he had already committed to Abhijeetda. I was told that in the sequel I would be given a song, which of course, I didn't believe then. But to my surprise, I was actually given a number in Dhoom 2!
So, which is closer to your heart — Dil Laga Na (Dhoom 2) or In Dino (Life in a...Metro)?

• Both are very close to my heart. But I guess In Dino is special. The approach towards this number is unique. I also liked the good job that was done with the electric guitar. There's a mix of Indian classical and Sufi music, while the arrangement is totally Western.
What was your initial reaction to In dino?

• Pritamda had composed the number in 15 minutes' time and somehow he wasn't sure of its quality. He expressed doubts on whether it would be a hit. Anuragda made me sing it once, convincing me that there would be further recording. But next, I was told that he's keeping the cue. It feels great when people come up to me saying, they really liked the number. I'm enjoying all the adulation.
Though you are a part of Band Metro, we didn't get to see you in the film...

• That's because I joined the band late. Pritamda had already sung the number for the shooting — I lent my voice much later.
Since Metro has released and promotional gimmicks are needed no more, do you think Band Metro will be a thing of the past?

• I agree that the band is difficult to maintain, since our individual careers are far more demanding. But still we are trying our best to find time for practice sessions on a regular basis. If things move in the same pace as now, we should be ready with our non-film album by October.
At a time when In dino is climbing the charts steadily, how does it feel to know that the song is a copy of Pakistani singer Waqar Ali's Do dilon ki ijazat, mera naam hai mohabbat?

• Pritamda had once mentioned that someone's pointed him out the similarity with this Pakistani number, since both play around with the words 'ijazat' and 'mohabbat'.
But tunewise also there's a lot of similarity...

• Though I haven't heard the number, I will listen to it at the earliest.
