Chapter 21 - A Change in Plans

Link to: Table of Contents

"Did you hear the news?" said Gaurav as he raced into Preet's office. "It's on all the news channels".

Preet nodded as he pointed to the TV screen on one side of the room.

"Business tycoon and industrialist Dev Kashyap had been on his way back to Delhi from a recent tour of his factories, when his private jet crashed. All 6 people on board including the pilot have been killed. Early reports indicate that one of the plane's engines malfunctioned. Still, as this is a high profile figure, police are investigating the crash in order to rule out any foul play".

"I have to get home and check on Meher", said Preet, as he picked up his jacket and headed out the door. "Cover for me at our meeting will ya?"

"Yeah go on...don't worry about it", said Gaurav.

Preet drove home frantically, ignoring the horns the other cars were blasting at him. His only concern right now was Meher. As he entered his apartment, he found her sitting on the sofa crying uncontrollably with her face hidden behind her hands.

"Preet", Meher whispered as she saw him, and immediately ran and hugged him.

"Oh God...Meher I'm so sorry", said Preet as he comforted her. "I was hoping some how you hadn't heard yet".

"It's all over the place Preet", sobbed Meher. "The TV, radio, newspapers. I can't believe this is really happening".

"Meher calm down", said Preet, as he gently wiped her tear streaked face with his hands. "Come on...just sit here...and I'll get you a glass of water".

Preet made Meher take a seat at the dining table, went to the kitchen and brought back a glass of water for her. She took a few sips before speaking up again.

"I was supposed to speak to him today", said Meher. "His secretary assured me she'd let me speak with him when he checked into the office later this afternoon. And then I saw the news. All I could think of was how I'll never get this issue between me and Viren resolved now. Knowingly or unknowingly, Mr. Kashyap totally messed up my life. I didn't know whether to be angry or cry. And then I started to hate myself for being so selfish. I mean a man just died, and all I could do was think of my problems. Isn't that just awful? He was more a friend of my mother's than someone I really knew, but still he was a nice man Preet".

"It's okay Meher", Preet said reassuringly. "You had all your hopes pinned on Mr. Kashyap getting his son off your back. The fact that he's no longer alive obviously came as a huge shock. It's only natural to be confused about your feelings".

"You don't think Viren had anything to do with this do you?" asked Meher.

"Well...from what you've told me about him, he's not the greatest guy on earth, but do you really think he'd stoop so low as to kill his own father?"

"Step-father", Meher corrected him. "It may sound hard to believe, but I wouldn't put it past him".

"I guess people have been known to do just about anything for money", said Preet, "but let's not jump to any conclusions. The news reports coming out are blaming engine problems for the crash and that's all we have to go on". There was a brief pause before he spoke up again. "So...um...what are you going to do now?"

"I'm not sure Preet", sighed Meher. "I'm not sure about anything anymore".

A few days later...

"Meher stop fidgeting, and stand still", ordered Sam.

It was the night of the office party. Sam had come over to Preet's place to get ready, and was helping Meher get into her outfit. Meher had sent Preet to change at Gaurav's place, saying she wanted to surprise him with her own dress. They would be back soon to pick the girls up.

"Thanks for coming over and helping me get ready Sam", sighed Meher.

"Sure", smiled Sam. "What are friends for?"

"Not just a friend, you're a life saver", said Meher. "Uff! I'm so nervous. I've never been to an office party before, or rubbed elbows with "Hi-Fi" executives. I'm still not sure what to say or do. I hope I don't mess things up for Preet".

"Meher, just relax and be yourself", said Sam, "and everything will be fine".

"Oh God! Why did I decide to wear this?" Meher said worriedly, as she glanced at herself in the mirror.

"Meher you look lovely, and red really suits you", smiled Sam.

"I'm sure Preet will be seeing red when he finds out I returned everything we shopped for, and got this instead", said Meher, as she bit her lower lip nervously.

"No he won't", insisted Sam. "Now stop fretting and stay still so I can pin your hair up".

"Maybe I should just leave it open", suggested Meher. "I think I heard Preet mention once that he thought it looked really nice that way".

"Oh ho!" smiled Sam. "You sure seem to have learned a lot about what Preet likes and dislikes".

"Well, we have been living together for so many days now. And spending all our time outside of work together too...so...yeah...I guess you could say I know him a lot better now", said Meher.

"Not to mention the fact that you've been babying him like a dutiful wife", teased Sam.

"I haven't been babying him", protested Meher.

"Meher you pick up after him, cook his favorite meals, eat only when he gets home, and stay awake late listening to his issues about work. Whenever I call you to see if you want to get together, you want to check with Preet first to see if he'd like to come along. Heck...you even tie his tie for him before he leaves for the office in the morning. Now I'd definitely call that babying", said Sam.

"Wow...it sounds really bad when you put it like that", said Meher.

"Hmm...I tell you he's going to have a hard time weaning himself off you", said Sam. "Speaking of which, have you told him yet about you moving out".

"No", said Meher.

"Why not?" asked Sam.

"I don't know", sighed Meher. "It just never seems like it's the right time".

"Is that all?" asked Sam.

"What do you mean?" Meher asked innocently.

"What I mean is...are you sure nothing else is happening between the 2 of you?" asked Sam. "Kahin...khel khel mein...? (Somewhere, did the game become a reality?)

"Uff Sam! You and your far fetched assumption", said Meher, rolling her eyes.

"Are they really far-fetched?" said Sam. "Come on Meher...you're a beautiful girl. You're intelligent, organized, sweet, caring and understanding. You're also not afraid to put Preet in his place when needed. He's become more punctual, neat, and responsible since he's met you. You balance that shaitan (devil) out wonderfully. Trust me you guys are perfect for each other".

Meher reflected on her friend's words. Preet was someone who could easily let his good looks go to his head, could take advantage of his innate charisma, instead he was down-to-earth and genuinely kind. Sure...he was, as Sam had put it, a bit of a shaitan, but no matter how hard she attempted to deny it to herself, she had to admit that she was actually attracted to him...and yes...had even begun to like him...a lot.

"Preet ke baray mein soch rahi ho?" teased Sam. (Are you thinking about Preet?)

"I...I have no idea what you're talking about", lied Meher.

Sam watched her friend's face turn red and smiled. "I think I got my answer".

"What answer?" asked Meher.

"That you really like him", chuckled Sam.

"No! I mean yes. I mean...not like that. We're just...friends", insisted Meher. "Anyway, what difference does it make even if I did like him? He's never said anything to me about how he feels. I'm probably not even his type".

"Oh really", said Sam. "And who do you think is Preet's type?"

"I don't know", said Meher shrugging her shoulders. "Monica maybe".

"Monica?" Sam said, slightly confused. She thought for minute before bursting out into a hearty laugh. "Meher I've known Preet since college, the only Monica he's ever drooled over is some Italian actress named Monica Belluci. He and Gaurav used to have her pictures plastered all over their dorm room walls".

"Oh", Meher sighed in relief.

"She's also 49, and a married mother of 2", added Sam.

Meher looked at her friend, then both girls burst out laughing. Just then they heard voices coming from the living room.

"Looks like the guys are here", said Sam. "You ready?"

"Yeah...um...you go on ahead", said Meher. "I'll be out in a minute".

Sam gave Meher a hug then left the room. As soon as her friend was gone, Meher looked over her reflection in the dressing table's mirror, then picked up the small rectangle shaped box containing the red bangles Preet had picked out for her. She had accessorized her outfit with some earrings and a matching pendant. The bangles would complete her simple yet elegant look.

"Where's Meher?" Preet asked Sam as she joined him and Gaurav in the living room.

"She'll be out in a minute", said Sam. "Gaurav, why don't we leave, and let Preet and Meher catch up?"

"Okay sure", said Gaurav. "See you at the party Preet".

Preet watched his friends leave, then checked his watch. "Meher!" he called out. "Meher come on what's taking you so long? It's not like we're going to meet the queen you know...I mean I thought you hated..." He stopped in mid-sentence as Meher stepped out of the room dressed in a beautiful red sari. "...being late".

The silky red fabric embellished with intricate beaded embroidery perfectly draped her figure, and her long brown hair flowed over her shoulders. A delicate necklace, matching earrings, and make up in warm hues adorned her pretty face. She was also wearing the red bangles he had bought her the other day. To say she looked pretty would be an understatement. No...not pretty, thought Preet. She looked insanely beautiful.

Meher wrang her hands nervously as Preet's eyes swept over her, seemingly inspecting every inch of her from head to toe. His silent musing was causing an odd flutter in her stomach.

"So...um...what do you think?" She asked, grasping at the first thought that came to her mind.

"Hmm...so this was your surprise?" said Preet, slightly amused at the breathlessness quality of her voice.

"Yes", Meher said defensively. "Why? Is it bad?"

"Um...Uh...No...Why would you think that?" said Preet.

"Because you hesitated in answering my question", said Meher.

"I did not hesitate...I was just...", said Preet.

"Um! Uh! I would definitely classify those as words of hesitation", argued Meher. "And before you yell at me for choosing to wear something so traditional, let me remind you Preet Juneja, that I'm not all that comfortable in western clothes. Sam said it would be fine to wear this...so you had better take it or leave it!"

"Meher you look beautiful, so stop complaining", said Preet.

Meher blushed a deep red at his remark. The way he had said it though, she knew he was being completely sincere.

On realizing what he had just said, Preet too felt a little awkward. "Ahem...", he said, taking a deep breath, and holding out his hand. "Ab...uh...hum dono sharmana band karein...aur party mein chale?" (Shall we stop feeling shy around one another, and go to the party?)

Meher nodded quietly and slipped her hand into his.

At the party venue, Preet and Meher congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Bakshi on their wedding anniversary. They then found Sam, who offered to take Meher around and introduce her to some of the other guests. Preet agreed, reminding them both to stay away from Rishap and Ashlesha as much as possible, and to be vague in answering any questions they may ask.

Preet's eyes followed Meher around the room, as she greeted and chatted with his colleagues' wives. If she was nervous, her demeanor certainly didn't show it.

Just then Gaurav came up to Preet and put his hand on his shoulder. "Seems like you can't take your eyes off Meher tonight", he chuckled.

"Huhn?" said Preet. "No man...I'm just nervous. I don't want Rishap or anyone else asking her anything she can't handle, you know what I mean?"

"Sure", said Gaurav. "But she's a smart girl. I'm sure she can handle Rishap". Gaurav looked at Preet he was still staring at Meher with his lips curled up in the slightest smile. "Plus she looks gorgeous tonight".

"She does, doesn't she?" Preet agreed absentmindedly.

"A-ha! I knew it", cired Gaurav.

"Knew what?" said Preet. "I wasn't paying attention. Gaurav you tricked me into saying that!"

"So she doesn't look gorgeous?" asked Gaurav.

"No...I mean yes...I mean...so?" Preet said defensively.

"So...you guys have been living together for like a month now", smiled Gaurav. "...something something?"

"Nothing yaar!" said Preet.

"Not even a little something?" teased Gaurav. "Because I can swear you're blushing...Preet Juneja actually blushing! I never thought I'd live to see the day".

"You keep this up and you may get your wish", grinned Preet.

Meher and Sam walked up to the drinks table and helped themselves to some punch. It was then that Ashlesha spotted them.

"Hi Sam!" said Ashlesha, as she walked up to Gaurav's wife, hugged her and proceeded to kiss the air. "Muah Muah! So nice to see you".

"Hi Ash", said Sam. "Nice to see you too".

"I'm sure it is", said Ashlesha as she eyed Meher.

"Um...have you met Meher?" asked Sam. "She's...uh...with Preet".

"Actually we have met before", explained Meher. "Although I must say that you look a lot taller when you're not sitting in other people's lap".

"Heh heh. Ah yes...Preet's wife...nice to see you again too", Ashlesha said dryly. "So...how do you like the party? And more importantly how do you like my dress?"

"Neckline thodi low hai nahin? (The neckline is a little low isn't it?)" Meher whispered to Sam, who covered her mouth to stifle a giggle.

"It's a one of a kind original. Got it just for tonight", continued Ashlesha. "Don't I look absolutely phat in it?"

"Fat?" Meher and Sam echoed in unison.

"P-H-A-T...pretty hot and tempting! Gotcha!" laughed Ashlesha. "Waise tum doono bhi kafi ache lag rahe ho (Actually you 2 don't look so bad either), even if you did decide to go all traditional with the cloth wrapped around the waist thingy".

"It's called a sari", fumed Meher.

"Whatever", Ashlesha said rolling her eyes.

"Heh heh. Ash has quite a sense of humor doesn't she?" Rishap said, as he joined the group. "I'm Rishap Rampal, by the way. Lovely party isn't it? I arranged the entire thing".

"It's very nice", said Meher.

"Good good...um Mrs...", said Rishap.

"Meher Juneja", Meher answered confidently.

"Yes of course...you're Preet's wife", said Rishap. "We've met a couple of times under some very odd circumstances. The last one of course is...not worth mentioning".

"Yes", smiled Meher, as she struggled to control a giggle. "I'm really sorry about that".

"Like I said don't mention it", said Rishap. "It's all just a memory. A very...painful memory. But I've never had the good fortune of really speaking with you until now".

"I'm sure there are many more important people in this room that are worthy of your attention Mr. Rampal, so why would you wish to speak to me?" asked Meher.

"Well...I...wanted to ask you something", Rishap said with fake sweetness. "You don't mind f I ask you a question, do you? You see I was wondering..."

"Technically speaking, you did just ask me a question", said Meher.

"I did?" said Rishap.

"You did", nodded Meher, "and you should at least give me a chance to respond to it, before you ask me another one".

"Well I...", tried Rishap.

"Unless of course the question is a rhetorical one", Meher remarked thoughtfully, "in which case the answer is obviously yes".

"Oh...", said Rishap. "Well...can I ask you a question?

"Yes", smiled Meher.

"Okay then...I...um...uh...I forgot what it was", said Rishap.

"Oh look there's that handsome husband of yours", remarked Ashlesha, as she saw Preet walking towards them.

"Hi guys!" smiled Preet. "Nice party Rishap".

"Thanks Preet", said Rishap. "I was just trying to get acquainted with your lovely wife here. Ah! I just remembered what I was going to ask her..."

"I'm afraid your questions will have to wait", said Preet, "because I'm going to steal the most beautiful girl here away for a dance".

Ashlesha flicked her hair to one side obviously pleased with herself for the compliment she thought Preet had bestowed upon her, when to her surprise, he held his hand out for Meher instead.

"Chalein Meher?" asked Preet. (Shall we Meher?)

"I thought you'd never ask", smiled Meher, as he led her to the dance floor.

"So...what did he want?" asked Preet, as he and Meher began to dance to a slow number.

"I don't think even he's sure", laughed Meher.

"Huhn?" said Preet.

"Nothing", smiled Meher. "But you...a little over the top with the most beautiful girl bit no?"

"Maybe", smiled Preet. "Or maybe...I meant it".

Meher bit her lip as she felt the color rising in her cheeks.

"You know your face just turned as red as your sari", chuckled Preet.

"Did not", protested Meher.

"Did too", said Preet, as he pulled her closer to him, and looked into her eyes.

Meher smiled shyly before letting her head rest on his shoulder. "Did not", she whispered.

Later...

"Well that didn't go as bad as I thought it would", laughed Gaurav, as Meher served everyone coffee.

"Yeah", smiled Preet. "These parties are usually very boring, but I actually had a nice time tonight".

"And you should have seen the look on Rishap's face everytime he tried to speak to Meher", added Gaurav, "He looked like a confused idiot. Mr. Bakshi seemed happy with everything too. And now that this night is over and done with I guess we can finally relax. Speaking of over and done with. What are your plans for moving out Meher?"

"Woah", said Preet, "who said she's moving out? I mean Mr. Kashyap's gone now, so what's the rush?"

"But Sam I thought you said Meher had found an apartment?" asked Gaurav.

"What apartment?" asked Preet.

Sam glared at her husband.

"Oops! Was I not supposed to say anything?" said Gaurav.

"Will someone please tell me what's going on?" demanded Preet.

"Okay...looks like it's time for us to head home. Come on genius", Sam said to Gaurav. "I'm sorry Meher", she added as she hugged her friend good-bye. "I know you wanted to tell him first".

Meher walked Sam and Gaurav out before joining Preet in the living room again.

"You're moving out?" asked Preet.

"Well...yes...", said Meher.

"You were making plans to leave and you didn't think the need to tell me about it?!" cried Preet. "I thought we were friends".

"But Preet...", began Meher, only to have him get up and walk away visibly upset. "Preet will you please stop throwing a tantrum".

"I am not throwing a tantrum. I just don't want to talk to you", argued Preet.

Meher was about to say something, but Preet spoke up again. "How could you Meher? How could you just make such a big decision without even telling me?"

"Well...you've been so busy at work, and I guess it just didn't come up", said Meher.

"Meher we live together!" said Preet. "You couldn't even say 2 words to me about this? I had to hear it from Gaurav".

"Okay...okay...my mistake", sighed Meher. "But really Preet it's not all that unexpected. I mean, I couldn't go on living here forever could I? With Mr. Kashyap gone, I wasn't really sure about going back to Delhi. Then Sam suggested I just stay here in Mumbai and get a fresh start. There was a teacher at her school who was getting married. Her husband got a great job overseas and her in-laws suddenly moved up her wedding date. She needed someone to take over her lease, as well as fill her spot at the school. She and Sam recommended me to the principal, because I could do both. I was already volunteering at the school so luckily the principal said yes. Everything just sort of fell into place. Sam and I went to see the apartment a few days ago. It's not a very big place, but the rent is within my budget and it's in a decent part of town". Meher looked at Preet, he was still frowning. "Abhi tak naraz ho? To phir...dant do mujhe". (Are you still upset with me? Then yell at me).

"What?" said Preet.

"Yes...go ahead...yell at me...get it out of your system", insisted Meher.

Preet turned to say something to Meher only to have her look back at him with big puppy dog eyes. "I don't want to yell at you!" he said in frustration.

"Not even a little?" asked Meher.

"Meher...how do yell at someone just a little?" asked Preet.

"Preet, I'm sorry that I didn't tell you earlier, but I thought you'd be happy with the news", said Meher. "I mean...you'll finally be getting me out of your hair and getting your place, your bed, your life back to normal. Besides if it's Mr. Bakshi you're worried about, I'm in the same town. I'll cover for you any time".

"No Meher it's not that", sighed Preet.

"Then what?" asked Meher.

"I'm going to miss you", Preet blurted out. "Um...uh...I mean it's going to feel kind of strange not having you around to talk to, argue with or come home to anymore. And...uh...who's going to tie my ties for me in the morning?"

"Well I tell you what", laughed Meher. "I promise to teach you how to fasten your tie before I leave. And I'll let you come over whenever you want to talk...argue...or hangout. Deal?"

"Maybe", said Preet shrugging his shoulders.

"Well what else do you want from me?" asked Meher.

"I don't know...but I could really use a hug from you right now", said Preet.

Meher looked up at Preet in surprise, and smiled shyly, before letting him take her in his arms. As Preet tightened his embrace around her, he could feel Meher's gentle breathing on his chest. He closed his eyes and relished the moment. And although too afraid to say anything to her, he decided right then and there that he wouldn't let the best thing that had ever come into his life stay away from him for long.
