Actor Gautam Gulati is at Cannes for the screening of his film Coward. He talks to Divya Kaushik about meeting Nicole Kidman and partying with Paris Hilton
He was among many theatre students who spend time at Mandi House, watching rehearsels and plays, grasping the nuances of acting. After theatre, small screen was his next calling. He was spotted by Ekta Kapoor and thereafter there has been no looking back. We know Gautam Gulati as Vikram in Diya Aur Bati. After gaining recognition on the small screen, Gautam is now set for bigger innings. At present, he is at Cannes for the screening of his film Coward (directed by Rakesh Mehta).
Coward is the story of a guy whose mother was raped. He was sent by his mother to London for studies. After living with the trauma for over 14 years, he returns to take revenge. Gautam says that "it's an intense film which can make you cry."
When the director offered Gautam the film, the actor discovered that it was being shot by one of the leading DOPs from London, whose short film he had watched. "Every scene was like a painting. Moreover, the story moved me. I always wanted to do an intense film and this was perfect," says Gautam. The best thing this project has given him is the chance to be at Cannes. "Money doesn't matter, but the kind of experience I am having at Cannes is incredible. It is a matter of pride for me to represent our country at this prestigious festival," he says.
Screening at international film festivals not only help the film gain attention but also ensures its good opening. "In our industry, it is very crucial to get the platform and once the film has got that, half the job is done. International screening also help actors meet different people from the rest of the world. You can develop business associations that might work in your favour in future. So far, I have got around 60 contact cards from international filmmakers. I have earned respect here, walked the red carpet with Hollywood celebs, something I didn't even dream of," he adds
Gautam has watched two films so far at Cannes " Mr Turner and Grace of Monaco. He met Nicole Kidman, director Mile Leigh and Bollywood biggies like Ramesh Sippy. He also partied with Paris Hilton.
TV, says Gautam, was a stepping stone and it helped him learn a lot. "Today I feel I am prepared to do any kind of role just because I have worked on the small screen for over six years. But films are far more real than TV. To prepare for my role in Coward I disconnected myself from the rest of the world for over 30 days. I tried my best to get into the skin of character and I think I was successful. There were times when even after the shot was complete, I would cry," adds Gautam.
The actor plans to continue with his TV work, while doing films. "I owe my learning as an actor to TV, so I might opt for less work but I would never leave the medium," he ends.
