Its the most popular movie in DVD/ Cable Tv. Have huge cult following. Everybody loved the movie. So why it didn't do well when it released?
Some people say it was ahead of its time. Some say there was no promotion. Salmaan once said that poster was shown 3 days before the film.
Whats the real reason?

The chemistry of Salman and Aamir,
The comic timings of Paresh Rawal, Shakti kapoor and all the other characters.

And even though it was a bit OTT, it fit perfectly in that time where everything was over the top, from the acting to costumes to everything.

Overall I loved it a lot, can still watch it and laugh as hard.

Some might not find it that great now, but it's OK. It was perfect for that time.

One more edit- I miss read your title, I thought you asked 'why did it do so well'.
So all the above answers are for that.
Anyways I loved it!

I think it was released during the time when Paarivarik movies like HSSH and HAHK were the trend. Looks like this movie could not match up to Alok Nathji's Sanskaar.😆

Not sure. It released in April and from what I have noticed in March-April BO is a bit slow in India. Unless it's a romantic comedy. My guess is they didn't promote the movie much that's why people didn't know about it?!

Edited**

I just found an interview of Rajkumar Santoshi

"It was very badly marketed and distributed. Nobody knew the film was coming. We got a below-average opening. But over the years, the film has acquired a cult status. People remember each and every dialogue of the movie, just as they remember every dialogue of 'Mughal-e-Azam' and 'Sholay'," he said. "

Did you ever analyse why AAA didn't do well commercially?
Actually, I loved the film. I thought it was fantastic. When it didn't do well in theatres, I was like, Kya hua yaar? What went wrong?' But one of the obvious things that went wrong was that no one knew when it released. It was that big a disaster. It was a washout (smiles). Kisi ne dekhi hi nahi film (no one watched it).

So, there was no publicity around it at the time?
The distributors weren't sure whether they were going to get the delivery of the film. In the market, the release date had been announced, but they weren't sure whether it would release. So the distributors didn't take the delivery of the prints. They were like, But what if we don't get it.' They felt if they put up the posters (and the film doesn't release), the public would kill them. So no one started the publicity. Finally, the delivery was done on Monday. On Tuesday, in some territories, the film was publicised for only three days.

  • It was ahead for its time, it would have done way better if it was released in late 90s
