Aishwariya Rai not Punjabi?

Since Rai is a Punjabi last name I always wondered why is Ash not punjabi😕 how come she's south Indian??

No it's not. I know a Rai that is Gujarati too. It's like Patel can be Gujarati Hindu along with a Muslim last name too. Last names tend to indicate occupations and so maybe there are some crossovers.

She is def Mangalorean.

I only knew Gujju Rais so always thought Aish was Gujju until I read up on her. So no worries, I don't know many Punjabi Rais so that's new to me too. 😆

Ye i know many rais that are punjabi as well so was surprised years ago to learn she wasn't, but many with known punjabi last names turned out to be non punjabi which shocked me!! I guess a last name cant alone tell what religion/caste one is!!
