"Are you going somewhere?"

"I have to leave. I've outstayed my welcome."

"You only just got here."

"It doesn't matter."

The suitcase was zipped shut, the echo of the zip reflecting upon the finality of the decision.

"Running away again won't solve anything."

"No, but it will heal her pain. What was I even thinking, following her here?"

"You were thinking with your heart for once, not your head."

"She'll still be here. I can come back when she feels ready, when she's willing to give me a chance to rectify everything."

"What makes you so sure? What makes anything a certainty? Life isn't set in stone. No one expected her to fly off halfway across the world, for a new identity and a new life. Who's to say she won't pack up and leave once more? After all, aren't you doing just that?"

He released his grip on the handle and leaned back against the wall. "She's still the same. I can see it in her eyes. Behind her imaginary walls is the girl I fell in love with. How do I get her back?"

"You built her walls. You have to be the one to break them."

***

Evening fell, bringing the end of a day once more. Pari had left for work, spent seven hours there and returned, and Geet still hadn't left the four walls of her bedroom.

She contemplated interrogating her again, but she knew her sister better than anyone. She wouldn't cave in.

So when she found herself at Maan's doorstep, she mentally willed herself to stay firm and remain persistent on unveiling the true nature of their relationship. But when an unrecognisable man opened the door and informed her he had left, the whole game plan was thrown into disarray.

"Would you like to come in for a coffee?" The stranger had offered, flashing her a polite smile.

Pari nodded and found herself setting foot into the apartment once more. Perhaps the game plan was still very much alive, after all.

A/N: The handsome young 'stranger'. Who else did you expect?

Her fingers sketched, smudged and scribbled against the sheet of paper. Eyebrows were furrowed, lips were bitten into, the evening gave way to the nightfall and she remained hunched over; pouring her life and soul into the drawing that came to life before her very eyes.
She dropped the pencil, satisfied with her efforts. A longer, more insightful glance at the art before her brought forth the tears from her eyes, one drop silently descending from her cheek onto the sketch.

"He never mentioned he had a brother."

"There is a lot you don't know about him. Nor anyone else, for that matter."

"Not even you?" Pari leaned forward, cradling her teacup. Dev seemed honest, innocent and as curious as she was. She suspected he knew more about Geet's past than he was letting on, but she was also aware that he was speculative of Geet's current situation. A piece of information which she wasn't willing to give away.

He shrugged and leaned back into the rocking chair. "Maan was always an enigma."

"How much do you know about my sister and Maan?"

He narrowed his eyes. "She didn't tell you?"

"She's an enigma too. You'd know all about those."

When Pari returned home later that night, she found Geet curled up on the couch with a drink in her hand.

"You found the bottle then?" she smirked as she settled beside her, adjusting the blankets.

"I was the one who hid it."

They shared a small laugh, a laugh which had almost been on the verge of extinction. Pari watched closely as Geet pulled out a sheet of paper from behind the cushion she was leaning on and held it out to her.

Geet watched her sister's expression change from surprise to recognition, and then she turned to her with questions in her eyes.

"It was the first time I saw him. Perched on the stones of the river bank, a cigarette lazily preoccupying his hand."

"Do you still love him?"

She looked away, at the vase of dried up flowers on the window sill.

"What would you have named the child?"

Geet's eyes shot back to her sister's, full of fury and accusation and betrayal. But when Pari took her hand between her own palms and gave a gentle squeeze of reassurance and understanding, her repressed emotions gave way and she collapsed in her lap - the suppressed cries of many years finally gaining release.

A/N: Geet's workstation, where the sketch takes place.
