Yeh Hai Bakrapur Review

Yeh Hai Bakrapur Movie Poster

Rating: 2.5/5 Stars (Two and Half stars)

Star cast: Anshuman Jha, Asif Basra, Amit Sial, Uttkarsh Majumdar, Faiz Mohammad, Suruchi Aulakh, Yaushika Verma, Shameem Khan

Director: Janaki Vishwanathan

What's Good: The film's satirical tone and ace concept makes it a well grounded plot right from the start.

What's Bad: The abruptness of the film will tick you off. The film had every ingredient to seem interesting and the inability to build on the good parts makes it quite a half baked watch.

Loo break: More than just a few.

Watch or Not?: Yeh Hai Bakrapur could have been quite an intelligent take on India's affiliation for blind faith. But the film somehow manages to kill its caliber with its shabbily done screenplay and reckless editing. The script lacks intuitiveness which was expected of it. Not entirely unwatchable but the film leaves by a sinking feeling which cannot be the residue of a confident product. It is a crucial story told without any keenness.

The story of the film is set in a small, predominantly Muslim village where the Qureshi family owns a goat. The family wants to discard their pet but that isn't acceptable to the little boy who loves his pet. A way must be plotted to save him from going away.

The boy does get his way through but his pet goat suddenly becomes the talk of the town and beyond attaining a Superstardom overnight. With endorsements flocking his way, the goat becomes the subject of people's likings and even Hindu-Muslim politics.

How does this end is what is an interesting thing to look out for in this film.

Yeh Hai Bakrapur Review: Script Analysis

If you sniff closely, Yeh Hai Bakrapur has the essence of a politically inclined story. But what draws your attention to the film is its childlike innocence and how the writing invests in building a tender story revolving around Shahrukh, the goat. The animal, for no credit of his, evolves into a seraphic creature of sorts. Definitely the commentary is on how interrelated blind faith and illiteracy is, but the message comes out quite contrived. There is a clear lack of clarity in the film's writing which leads to a sloppy screenplay for it.

Though the end product isn't much to my satisfaction, I cannot help but bring up the tenderness in the tale. Yes, the main reason why the milieu of the film seems even remotely attractive is because of the child like glee in the wee moments of the film. The child's love for his goat arouses an array of really delicate emotions.

While it all begins well, the story's slow build up infuriates one, almost making one lose interest. The story doesn't really move much, beating around the bush over and over again. The characters become flat and doesn't evolve further over the course of the film and most importantly, the pivotal point of story stands defeated by the time the end credits flow down the big screen.

It is the lack of a nuanced story in a plot of this vein, is what I understood as the problem with the film's script. The way the script infuses the tragedy of poverty is near perfect but doesn't really build on the main theme too much. The ripples caused by the goat Shahrukh isn't exactly believable due to the shaky storytelling in those parts. The flow of the film ends up grinding your brains to pulp ending in nothing more than sheer futility.

Yeh Hai Bakrapur Review: Star Performances

Anshuman Jha does a stellar job and manages to emerge as a startling performer every time he is on screen. He is endearingly innocent and awfully sweet.

Suruchi Aulakh is another one hard to miss. She holds her ground with the character and plays it with perfection.

Asif Basra is great in his part too and adds well to the film.

Yeh Hai Bakrapur Review: Direction, Editing and Screenplay

Janaki Vishwanathan's work is potent but lacks finesse. There are a multiple sequences in the film that conveys mostly the story's inability to settle well with the audiences. The unhurried pace could have been used to establish something but it is eventually wasted away with a climax and an ending that clearly lacks soul.

Though there is authenticity in how she frames the rural background of the film and uses it as a character in her film, the loose second half with a sloppy storytelling and finally a blunt ending doesn't reflect well on the film.

Agnee's music is put to good use too but, the film doesn't turn out to perfection.

Yeh Hai Bakrapur Review: The Last Word

I did not leave the hall with a smile after Yeh Hai Bakrapur for the simple reason that I saw there was lot more potential entrapped in the story than what came out on screen. The frenzy for filmstars in our country left unexplored despite being hinted on repeatedly.

The flat climax and dissatisfaction after the ending left me dull. There was so much matter put to so little use. I am going with a 2.5/5.

Story: Yeh Hai Bakrapur is a socio-political satire that intends to touch upon various issues pertaining to rural India.

Review: Residing in a distant village, the Qureshi family struggles to make ends meet. Hounded by debt collectors, they decide to sell off their pet goat 'Shahrukh' as the last resort. However, the goat means the world to the little boy in the family. Shahrukh is after all his best friend and constant companion. Helpless and heartbroken, he finds solace in cool city barber Jaffer's (Anshuman Jha) clever solution to his dilemma.

Their idea turns things around for the Qureshis and the goat, who ends up becoming an overnight sensation. But then begins the politics of religion, horrors of blind faith and lust for money.

Janaki Vishwanathan's concept that highlights the little ironies of life and fickleness of human nature is a sure-shot winner. The slice-of-life tale is convincing and thus believable. The village has been beautifully captured on camera and the actors' genuine performances lend authenticity to the setting. Anshuman Jha in particular is impressive. Suruchi Aulakh stands out too but the actress is a tad too theatrical and high-pitched for cinema. Overall, the film works for its quirky premise.

However, while one expects Janaki to make the most of 'Shahrukh' (pun intended), that track holds no relevance to the story at all. Any name could have sufficed. Also, after delving into issues like religion and superstition, the director plays it safe by offering no conclusion or take on either. This dilutes the motive and makes the story seem half-baked.

Editing is a major flaw. A few scenes end abruptly while the rest go on forever, making you wonder if the director forgot to say 'cut'. A slow build-up and a comparatively hurried climax are spoilers too. Even the dialogues are not as funny as they should ideally be.

To sum it up, the film is as unique as superstar Shah Rukh Khan, but it lacks his charisma.

This is definitely a breather from his big budget Bollywood masala entertainers

Shahrukh Khan might be doing Farah Khan's upcoming film, Happy New Year, but another female director by the name of Janaki Vishwanathan has also roped in Shahrukh, which happens to be a goat. Yes, it's the goat, who plays the protagonist in National award-winning filmmaker Janaki's film, Yeh Hai Bakrapur. So is this superstar goat lucky for her? Well, to a certain extent, yes. This film is a breather from regular mega budget, multi-starrer films, we have to admit. Having said that, you might not have a rib-tickling laughter while watching this movie, but you will certainly have a smile on your face at the end.

Set in the rural India, Yeh Hai Bakrapur is the story about a Muslim family and Shahrukh (the goat), who suddenly acquires a divine status in the village. From being a normal pet goat, Shahrukh goes on to become the talk of the entire nation, for no fault of its. Talk of the goat's resemblance with King Khan, it is even offered brand endorsements by the advertising agencies. As the tagline rightly says, "Yahaan Shahrukh mein rab dikhta hai."

This satire set against the backdrop of a backward India, will keep you hooked to your seats right until the end. All we can say is that the world of Yeh Hai Bakrapur is fresh with fun, though not intentionally.

Coming to the performances, Anshuman Jha, who plays a hair stylist in the movie has done a stellar job. That apart, each and every actor in the movie blends perfectly into their character. A special mention to theatre actor Suruchi Aulakh, who is way ahead of the others. Abinandhan Ramanujam, who is the cinematographer deserves a pat on his back for those lovely camera angles. Agnee does a fantastic job at conjuring a melodious album, but when it comes to lyrics, you will either find it entertaining or trying too hard to be different.

Yeh Hai Bakrapur in a nutshell is about blind faith, poverty and religious hypocrisy that exists in rural parts of our nation. So if you are fan of social satires, you surely shouldn't miss this one. As for the others, you won't regret watching this movie as well.

MOVIE REVIEW YEH HAI BAKRAPUR IS ONE OF THE BEST SOCIAL SATIRES OF RECENT TIMES

View Image in Large Size
Film is impeccable and that credits goes to director for handling such delicate issues and rustic settings in such light hearted manner. Even use of name Shahrukh is very smart and does not hurt even die hard fans of star.

YEH HAI BAKRAPUR Is One Of The Best Social Satires Of Recent Times

Pluses:

crisp screenplay, pitch perfect dialogues, interesting plot, subtle yet real performances

Minuses:

romantic song does not fit in narrative, story does not move forward in later part of 1st half

Critic Rating:

4.5/5

Business Rating:

2/5

Verdict:

Watch this perfect social satire in this election season

Detailed Analysis:

General election fever has gripped the nation and that is why Bollywood is trying its luck with few political/social satires. 'Bhoothnath Returns', Dekh Tamaasha Dekh' and 'Kaanchi' were few such films and now national award winning director Janaki brings us 'Yeh Hai Bakrapur'.

Film has rather interesting plot. A small village gets its first celeb in form of goat who is named Shahrukh. Unlike what promo suggested, film does not mock superstar but on contrary it sheds light on his popularity and reach. This goat becomes the most important individual in village and medium to earn huge sum of money for very poor Qureshi family. But does this goat possess any special power, how goat becomes bone of contention between Hindu and Muslim form the rest of the story.

Performance wise, Anshuman Jha is perfect as street smart guy of village who is catalyst of this story. Asif Basra as Qureshi probably delivers best act of his career with utmost honesty. Suruchi Aulakh is extraordinary as greedy and needy housewife. Yoshika Verma is strictly average though she looks the innocent girl of village. Shameem Khan is hilarious as unemployed henpecked husband and Amit Sial is good in cameo as political leader.

Editing is crisp and cinematography is decent. But the real hero is writing department. Its so crisply written especially in 2nd half including climax that it becomes a gem of the film. Layered social intricacies has been brought in rather entertaining manner. Success of the film lies in conveying almost every social evil and issues in rural India with complete objectivity, be it communalism or poverty or petty politics or media frenzy.

But yes its director Janaki Vishwanathan who not only triumphs as writer but also as director. She won National award for her film Kutty way back in 2001 but this one proves her command over medium. Film is impeccable and that credits goes to director for handling such delicate issues and rustic settings in such light hearted manner. Even use of name Shahrukh is very smart and does not hurt even die hard fans of star.

Film will release day after tomorrow and should get 300 plus screens. Film will get quite a stiff competition from last week's 'The Amazing Spiderman 2' and 8-9 new releases of this week especially 'Hawaa Hawaai'. Film should open with modest numbers and will need good word of mouth to survive at box office which it should get to an extent if not universal!

Go for this one for rare relevant powerful yet fun social satire!

In an industry where fame and fortune changes every Friday, where equations and relations are correlated with the BO earnings [strange, but true!], the only thing that remains constant is change. Several film-makers are making an earnest attempt to be an integral part of the transformation, attempting wide-ranging genres and embarking on a path less travelled. Of late, a number of storytellers are in the mood to attempt satires, doing away with the mundane and unexciting tried and trusted stuff. Recall PEEPLI [LIVE], OMG - OH MY GOD! JOLLY LLB, SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... more recently, there was DEKH TAMASHA DEKH. Now Janaki Vishwanathan attempts a satire that's set against the backdrop of rural India -- YEH HAI BAKRAPUR.

Like Anusha Rizvi, who directed PEEPLI [LIVE], Janaki, has also been a journalist. The question that crosses your mind is, why do journalists attempt satires? I guess, when you watch life at such close quarters -- examining the ludicrousness and illogicalities so meticulously -- you hope to present the myriad experiences on celluloid some day. And what better genre than satire to highlight the message. After all, tackling a grim issue and coating it with humor makes it easily palatable, right?

I am told the premise of YEH HAI BAKRAPUR is inspired by a news-report about a goat brought from Rajasthan to Delhi. The story explores the innocent relationship between Zulfi [Shameem Khan], a young kid, and his pet goat Shah Rukh. Burdened with poverty, recurring expenses and loans, the family is always in distress because Ansari [Asif Basra] and his nephew Majid [Faiz Khan] don't earn enough to sustain the family. As a last resort, the family decides to sell off the goat at a mela, much against the wishes of Zulfi, who is completely heartbroken by the decision.

That's when Jaffer [Anshuman Jha], who is in love with Zulfi's elder sister Naaz [Yaushika Varma], gets a brainwave...

YEH HAI BAKRAPUR marks the foray of National Award winner Janaki Vishwanathan into Hindi films [she also doubles up as the writer of this film]. Frankly, she couldn't have chosen a more appropriate theme for her Hindi debut, since the written material offers her ample scope to entertain the viewers with an out-of-the-box theme, plus drive home a serious message. The serpentine twists in the plot and the engaging screenplay manage to keep you alert and attentive, except when Janaki decides to have an abrupt intermission and an open end, which stands out like a sore thumb. Ideally, it would've worked better had she thought of a firm resolution.

Janaki also uses the songs [Agnee] smartly in the narrative; the tracks don't look forced into the goings-on. Like CHENNAI EXPRESS, which paid tribute to Rajinikanth ['Lungi Dance'], the team of YEH HAI BAKRAPUR too pays tribute to SRK towards the end credits. The background score is subtle, but effective. Extensively filmed in Bidar in Karnataka, the DoP [Abinandhan Ramanujam] captures the locales wonderfully on celluloid.

The cast slips naturally into their respective parts. Anshuman Jha and Yaushika Varma enact the lovebirds with conviction. Asif Basra is absolutely at ease, while Faiz Khan is convincing as the helpless husband. However, it is Suruchi Aulakh who breathes life into her character of the nagging housewife Suraiyya. She's remarkable! Shameem Khan, the child artist, exudes the right amount of smartness and innocence required for the part. Wasim Khan [Jaffer's father], Utkarsh Mazumdar and Amit Sial are alright.

On the whole, YEH HAI BAKRAPUR employs a comic tone to tell a serious story. Armed with a simplistic, but innovative plot and an engaging screenplay, this small little film deserves a watch because it's made with heart.
