Story: In a quirky twist of fate, Chambal's outlandish outlaw falls in love with a wannabe actor. Will she surrender her sensational sins for love?

Review: At the end of 'Revolver Rani' you come out shot by two bullets - one in the gut, the other in the heart. Such is the firepower of one crackerjack of a woman who preens like a desi diva (in metallic conical bras), cusses like a true-bred Chambal-ki-Rani, and fires more barood in the bistar than her toy-boy can handle.

Surely, no daaku clan can boast of such a fierce phashionista (dons designer wear from 'Benice'), quite unattractive and scarred, yet, deliciously deadly. Alka Singh aka Revolver Rani (Kangna) is a dacoit-turned-politician who's lost her seat to the opposition in Gwalior, resulting in bloody bullet baths. Her toy-boy Rohan (Vir), a struggling Bollywood actor, becomes her full-time obsession. He wants to use her as a step to stardom; instead, he becomes her sex-machine. Hereon, the story tragically turns into an ironic mix of politics, comedy and a love story with bleeding wounds.

  • Revolver Rani: Trailer

  • Revolver Rani: Thaayein Kare Katta' song

  • Revolver Rani: Title song

  • Kangana Ranaut shows off her guns and poses

  • Kangana backs out of 'Revolver Rani'

Sai Kabir's skill lies in his satirical story-telling and style, not so much the plot. The crux is simple - power, politics and revenge. It's a combo of cool and crass - the kind of stuff pulp fiction is made of. Often textured in Quentin Tarantino style, he sets the mood with a notorious mix of quirkiness, violence and an eclectic background score. The second half is stretched, the songs interrupting the pace. Some dark, humorous moments (even the background score) are quite inspired by 'Kill Bill'.

Kangna is pure dynamite, firing on all barrels. With a tanned tone, kohl eyes and mercurial moods - she uses every weapon to fire a mind-blowing performance. Vir strikes at times but his character is not as fleshed out; Piyush (as Alka's *mama*) is superb and Zakir adds power to the plot.

'Revolver Rani' is loaded with a lot more than just gunpower. You'll enjoy biting this bullet.

Posted On: 24 Apr 2014

Revolver Rani Movie review: Due to her brilliant acting in "Queen", Kangana Ranaut's next movie "Revolver Rani" is one of the most anticipated movies. And, add unique and hilarious trailers to the equation, Revolver Rani becomes a highly promising prospect for the Bollywood fans. So, does Kangana deliver once again, we will analyse in our movie review.

Plot Outline

And then they learn about Alka's love interest a struggling actor from Mumbai Rahan Kapoor (Vir Das). They decide to exploit this weakness to break Alka. What follows is the story of Revolver Rani.

Actor Performance
Kangana Ranaut who suffered a couple of disasters before returning with Queen, has once again delivered an excellent performance in Revolver Rani. She expertly portrays the role of a ruthless and eccentric political leader. Her dialogue delivery has vastly improved and in this movie is a highlight of her performance.

Positive Point
The main strength of Revolver Rani is the brilliant acting by the whole cast of the movie. Director Sai Kabir has smartly used his resources. The blend of comedy and action is meticulously handled. And, the love affair of Alka and Rahan is intelligently used to entertain the audiences.

Negative Points
The script of the movie has some flaws which makes some sequences look a bit illogical. The music of the movie is also underwhelming.

New Delhi: After basking in the success of Queen', Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut is set to grab eyeballs with her film Revolver Rani'.

"" style="border: 0pt none; vertical-align: bottom;" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" name="google_ads_iframe_/13276288/JagranPost-News-ArticleDetail-468x60-BTF-1_0" id="google_ads_iframe_/13276288/JagranPost-News-ArticleDetail-468x60-BTF-1_0" width="468" frameborder="0" height="60" scrolling="no">
Kangana Ranaut in Revolver Rani

Film: Revolver Rani

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Vir Das, Piyush Mishra, Zakir Hussain, Pankaj Saraswat

Director: Sai Kabir Shrivastav

Story: Set in the hostile territory of Chambal, Revolver Rani is a satirical and unusual love story about Alka Singh (Kangana Ranaut), the leader of a political party, and her obsessive love for Rohan Mehra (Vir Das), a rising star of Bollywood.

After the elections are over in Gwalior, Alka's opposition, the Tomar party, comes to power. The Tomar party wants to take the advantage of their new found power to take on Alka and destroy her completely. Tomar's kidnap Rohan from Mumbai and take him back to Gwalior with the aim to kill him. They are about to pull the trigger when Revolver Rani reaches the spot and saves his life.

This film basically revolves around a woman political giant who falls in with a Bollywood actor and then has to protect him from her enemies.

Review: The film's comic timing is impeccable. Director Sai Kabir has managed to tell the complicated love affair of a woman political goon and a Bollywood star effortlessly.

Revolver Rani is a very authentic satire, littered with dead bodies, love and humour. The film's plot keeps the audience engaged.

The film proves to be a must watch for Kangana's exceptional performance as a rebellious political goon. Vir Das, who is playing Kangana's love interest in the film, has proved his comic timing like never before.

Revolver Rani movie review: Kangana's charm will attract people

Revolver Rani movie review: Kangana's charm will attract people

Revolver Rani is a masala entertainer which is surely to hit the right chords with the masses at large.

Stars- Kangana Ranaut, Vir Das, Piyush Mishra, Zakir Hussain
Director- Sai Kabir
Music director- Sanjeev Srivastava

Revolver Rani is a rom com which goes into the deadly world of goons, where guns speak in volume.

Sai Kabir, who has Kismat Conncetion and Lahma to his credit for story and screenplay, has come up with a unique masala entertainer, which once again doesn't allow your conscious to emphasise much over the logics of the story.

Alka Singh (Kangana Ranaut), is a gruesome leader of a political party in Chambal but falls weaker for her love Rohan (Vir Das) who is a struggler in Bollywood. On the other hand, Rohan wants to use her as a ladder to climb up in Bollywood but he ends up being her lust instrument.

The opposition- the Tomar party headed by Udaybhan Tomar (Zakir Hussain) along with brother Govind Tomar (Pankaj Saraswat) want to destroy Alka completely and when they realise about her love interest they plan to deal with it emotionally.

How Rohan finds himself trapped in this whole political fuss and how Alka saves him from being targeted by the opposition party, Kabir Sai narrates this complete scenario in his unusual mode of satirical humour.

Though, mostly unbelievable but the Revolver Rani has its heart at right place. With desi' politics and use of broken English dialects, the flick features the utmost real attitude of goons and politicians in the urban areas. Particularly the dialogues, written by Kabir himself, are surely to go down well with masses.

Sai Kabir's screenplay is mostly its weakest point but there are ample sequence to paint over the other blemishes in the storyline. The characterisation of the characters in the land of dead is mostly humourous.

Kabir influentially balances the action and love elements in the flick. Of course one would feel that how a politician like Alka can be so berserk for her love and fashion but its attitude which Kabir portrays through Kangana.

She is the one, who is not looking back again. The actress after Queen' has come up with stronger performance this time. Her dialogue delivery with performance is extra ordinary.

Vir Das excels in his act. He meticulously plays the Bollywood struggler and once again is perfect in his comedy timing.

Piyush Mishra as Kangana's uncle is brilliant in his act. He supports her in every decision.

Pankaj Saraswat and Zakir Hussain are great in executing a shrewd politician cum goon.

Music by Sanjeev Srivastava is good but nothing extraordinary.

Revolver Rani is a masala entertainer which is surely to hit the right chords with the masses at large.

Revolver Rani review: Kangana shines in a film that doesn't
by Tanushree Bhasin Apr 25, 2014 #Bollywood

Warning: Spoilers ahead
It takes all of fifteen minutes to realise that you are watching a desi version of Kill Bill in Revolver Rani. Its got Quentin Tarantino written all over each and every sequence, the director having broken the film down into just that " a series of well-orchestrated sequences. And in tune with director Sai Kabir's aesthetic inspiration, Revolver Rani exudes Tarantino style pulpy kitsch, much to the amusement of an unsuspecting Indian audience.

Kangana Ranaut in Revolver Rani. Image from IBN-Live The first half is absolutely delightful. Weird would be an understatement to describe just how absurd the film's treatment is. And I mean that as a compliment. The dialogues are rooted to the setting of the Chambal valley, tapping into a treasure trove of local lingo and humour. Similarly, the music and background score make no pretences to being mainstream and necessarily melodious. Aarti Bajaj's clever editing is in the style of typically B-grade cinema, adding much to the narrative of the film. And the star of the film, Kangana Ranaut, who seems to be having a great year, hits another home run with her performance as the feisty and slightly deranged Alka Singh who is scary, naughty, unabashedly sexual, just and professionally speaking quite a fighter.

She champions the rights of adivasis, fighting opposition party leader Udaybhan Tomar (Zakir Hussain) who she claims took money from a mining company called Siddhanta (obviously referring to Vedanta's dirty politics in Orissa). She falls in love with Rohan (Vir Das) a wannabe hero, and there is a very obvious gender role reversal between the two. She's the one who defends him from local goons who have him tied up just like Hindi film heroines are usually.

She earns the money, pays for his upkeep and even funds a film for him to act in. How many times have we seen heroes do the exact same thing for their girlfriends, never quite the reverse. It is she who exhausts him with her sexual incorrigibility and insatiability and not the other way around. He tries his best to instill romance into their relationship, mouthing all the typical Bollywood dialogues that lovers exchange on screen, but she is far removed from the sanitised world of cinematic love.

"Jawaan hote hee ise bandook chalana sikha dena theek rahegi," she tells a young girl's mother, offering a glimpse into how she survives and thrives in a world dominated by men and patriarchal attitudes.

The film however, disappoints just as much as it entertains. Right before the interval we are told that Alka is pregnant and I sat through the interval wondering whether the film would judge her for her sexual independence and go about taming her in the second half.

My fears were unfortunately confirmed with the rest of the film turning into a sob story about how Alka was forced to pick up a gun even though she really always wanted to be a housewife packing tiffins for her husband. Her errant "dabangg" attitude is corrected by a call to her maternal instincts and she decides to abandon the world of guns and politics because "Baby ko stress hojaata hai. "

Choosing a better life and love over dirty politics is fine, but why must this only become possible through motherhood? She is the kind of woman who seems to always get what she wants, so why does she wait for a baby she never wanted to finally shape her life in the image of her dreams? It's a rather unexpected and sudden character change that seems to come out of nowhere and therefore remains unexplained throughout.

The story also smacks of sexism at another level. So long as Alka is a slave to her Shakuni-esque Mama's (a very menacing Piyush Mishra) commands, she is hailed as the Queen of the region. But as soon as she starts to assert her own individuality ( no matter how problematic) she is shunned and attacked.

The ending leaves things open for a possible sequel and one hopes that Revolver Rani returns in the style of The Bride to avenge the wrongs done to her. Till then, this part of her story remains a rather failed and half-hearted attempt to make a hero out of a heroine

Review: Revolver Rani is a confused film

Kangna Ranaut in Revolver Rani

Revolver Ranicould have been the movie of the year. It ended up as a confused film that can't decide who, or what it wants to concentrate on instead, says Paloma Sharma.

The era of dacoits in India may have passed, but Bollywood's fascination with the Chambal valley has just been revived with Revolver Rani.

Set in the badlands of interior Madhya Pradesh, Sai Kabir's directorial debut follows Alka Singh (Kangana Ranaut), a feared dacoit, as she navigates the murky world of politics and the murkier world of love.

Alka Singh is your average hot-headed daku with an almost insatiable appetite for alcohol and sex and her paramour Rohan Kapoor (Vir Das), a struggling Bollywood actor, is her toy boy.

Not only does Alka excel at going "thyan, thyan, thyan" as the title track will have you know, she also dabbles in local politics under the guidance of her guru/guardian Balli Mama (Piyush Mishra) with the Tomar family as her arch nemesis.

The Tomars, although not quite villainous enough to give competition to the Rani, manage to dole out a couple of jokes here and there.

Revolver Rani is exclusively for those who can grasp the subtleties of black comedy.

It features some amazing dialogues spoken in Hindi so shudh, it could give Hindi scholars a run for their money.

Kangana takes on the role-of-a-lifetime with much fervour and is absolutely brilliant throughout the film but there are certain moments when the acting goes a tad over the top.

Vir Das struggles to fit into the role of Rohan Kapoor. All you see is the actor -comedian as characters from some of his previous films like Namaste London and Badmaash Company.

Piyush Mishra shines as Alka's Mama -- a ruthless politician who must choose between his politics and his prodigy when push comes to shove.

But the actor to look out for in this film is Mishkka Singh as Payal Parhihar, the news anchor onSagat Samachar, who is a potent blend of shayari and breaking news.

To say that Payal Parihar is the maa of a certain Goswami won't be an overstatement.

The first five minutes of Revolver Rani are immensely entertaining.

But the scenes last for longer than they should.

Although the last shot of a film with such an amazing concept should be one where you stand up and whistle your lungs out, the lack of intensity in the case of Revolver Rani is disappointing to say the least.

This is definitely not a good sign.

Director Kabir creates an interesting, relatable character in Alka (minus the revolvers, of course) and her journey through infertility, love, marriage, betrayal and her constant wish to be fair/more beautiful will resonate with many women.

That said, the focus unfortunately keeps shifting from Alka to other characters and themes at a manic speed.

Revolver Rani is perfect on paper but if it really wanted to generate that spark, it should have probably taken the character-centric route.

Somewhere along the way, the story disappears and so does the editor, or so it seems.

A lot of Revolver Rani seems inspired from Quentin Tarantino films -- the powerful female character with guns template, the title track and the aesthetically portrayed violence are strongly reminiscent of many of his previous fims.

Even the animated bits seem to be borrowed from Kill Bill Vol 1. This does end up spoiling the novelty factor.

Revolver Rani could have been the film of the year. It is sad that it chose to be a confused story instead.
