The Four Days!
Chapter-16:
Thirukkural: (Chapter-; Poem-)
He who has imprisoned me in his soul, is he ashamed to enter incessantly into mine -Thiruvalluvar.
She did not need to reach a window to know it was raining outside. She smelt the muddy smell of the soil as it calmed her mind a little.
She knew her sister would be in deep sleep now - her usual afternoon nap- after hours of shopping.
She needed some moments alone with her memories, since she had only memories and feelings now about those incidents in her life after joining ETF.
She needed that loneliness to realize her and him as well, well!
They were not the usual sweet moments to indulge in anymore though they started well unexpectedly.
She did miss the team now, she thought, as Chottu said. And she felt guilty yet again as she thought which one she missed the most.
Oh, What an ironic it is!' It made her embarrassing to think, whom she missed the most was not even ready to consider her as a mere person to be missed and who really missed her while she was not around-even though it was for a mere two days-were not considered as important as this arrogant, mere, ruthless, whole, strange, causal, heart rendering, second to none...
Her mind's voice trailed off as she realized that she was not sniding him, but was praising him instead, unknowingly.
After all these were some of the reasons for her to lose herself for him.
Some memories would not wear out even when you rewound them daily...
Now she could hear the rain in her reminisce as she retraced one rainy evening when they returned to ETF office from a crime scene.
When they started it was drizzling.
After they reached the crime scene the rain started pouring cats and dogs.
[I'm going to lead you from here!]
The vehicle had stopped suddenly and Chottu announced it had broken; we were in the middle of our journey.
Everybody seemed thinking.
Chottu said suddenly, "We've to go in a taxi, which will be scarce in the rain. But sir can go easily, since his house is near from here. Anybody has an umbrella?" He hinted.
None said that, "I have!"
Even after hinted by him Arjun seemed contemplating over the situation. We were eagerly watching him to Chottu for any change of situation or solution.
At last he accepted half-heartedly.
Then we started planning how to get down from the vehicle, quietly.
And the thought made Sakshi to smile even now.
Ayesha noted that I had a map and suggested to use it as an umbrella. It was accepted without question for we had nothing bigger than that.
First I stepped out of the vehicle and noted that half of the tyre was under the flood literally.
I reached the front door and Arjun joined me under the hood of the map.
Then we reeled the vehicle in slow motion not that we were joking, but for we could not move faster.
We trudged our way to Chottu, who was over the wheel. Once he got in we felt difficulty keeping the map over our heads. Yes! We had to give most portion of the map to cover him. But no, he accepted the truth that we could not provide full coverage generously and took his position in the front.
Then we got the girls out and stuffed them between us.
Ayesha pushed Sakshi toward Arjun's side and she took her position beside me.
We smirked at Ayesha.
While we were about to move, Arjun remembered something and said suddenly, "Now, wait a minute, I have a plastic bag in the back! I can use it!"
He started moving back from our umbrella.
A frustrated Sakshi looked us pitifully.
Then I went to save her.
"But sir-"
"It can cover my head, Shree! And I can change! I have a set in the house!"
He was not going to yield.
"But not for the girls, sir!"
That stopped his arguing further.
I lifted my collar to show my pride to Ayesha.
Ayesha hushed me, for it might upset the plan if got caught.
The procession started moving toward his house, slowly.
Sakshi was enjoying the occasion and thanked the rain a thousand times at least for what was happening under the map.
She forgot everything around as always.
The girls fit aptly in the space between Chottu in the front and Arjun and I in the back.
Chottu took a long step and we nearly lost the cover. The girls giggled and moved fast with him, who had the cover now.
Arjun's and my backs started getting wet.
Then we decided to move in a strict march.
As planned we moved till Ayesha tumbled over as she put her foot on a stone under the water and for support she clutched Sakshi's hand suddenly, who did not expect this was coming.
They both started to slide, but Sakshi suddenly decided not to fall on Arjun and tried to take hold of Chottu's T-shirt. But he had taken a step forward already.
"Oh, God!" she cried.
We had to push them from behind once heard her shouting.
Arjun put a hand on Sakshi's back and balanced her as I did to Ayesha.
This time Chottu giggled at them, seeing them in our hands.
Again plan changed.
We decided to hold hands before taking a step further.
Arjun and I used our free hands to hold the girls' hands, for which Sakshi grinned at Ayesha.
They both held their hands happily like school girls and moved behind Chottu, carefully.
Finally, we reached his house, successfully.
This way we had saved the girls from getting wet who went inside once we entered in as though to dry their hair(?!)
We settled on the sofa in the hall.
Once found the kitchen, Sakshi opened the cupboards and started searching something.
"Don't!" Ayesha warned her, "If he had known that we were coming, he would have pasted a notice on every single thing here to say not to touch'!"
"Wrong!" Sakshi said with a wink and crouched down before the refrigerator and came out at once pouting her lips for could not find what she was searching for.
"No milk!" She opened a cupboard and announced, "No coffee powder!" Ayesha was looking at her helplessly.
She said as she moved something in the cupboard and stood on her toe.
"If he had known already he wouldn't have allowed us in!"
Ayesha could not help but smile at that.
She searched further and started listing out the items.
"A ton of tea powder, as expected!"
She took a pack from behind and said,
"God, we have green tea here!"
As Ayesha put a pot on the stove.
Sakshi came out of the kitchen holding a cup to her lips and took a sip as Chottu saw her coming.
She smiled at his eager eyes and motioned behind her.
Ayesha put the tray on the teapoy and gave a cup to Arjun.
He stared at it a moment and decided to take it as the steam from the cup was needed for the climate.
We were enjoying the tea as Sakshi moved with her tea and started looking the walls and showcases then from books shelves to photos, playfully.
It was a play for others who were seeing her from a distance, but she was filling the moments with his things, memories, feelings...
She knew she had to move away soon, but before that she had to indulge in the moments...
At last she was in his house!
She was allowed to enter in although not with a pleasant invitation.
Ayesha noticed that he was staring at Sakshi and knew that for courtesy he was holding the composed posture.
She took her position next to Sakshi and cleared her throat once.
Sakshi came out of her reverie unwontedly and looked Ayesha.
She motioned the tray.
Sakshi got the clue and followed her to the kitchen.
She remembered that in his house she was trying to compose a poem when Ayesha interrupted her.
And now she wished to complete that as none was going to interrupt her now for a minute at least.
She started those lines as,
'What of those words
If couldn't speak...'
She looked at his photo emotionally as if she was asking him from her heart's dumb feelings.
'What of those dawns
After every night
If couldn't walk with you...'
She saw his smiling face in that picture.
She felt that as though his smile spread on her lips too.
If her eyes were of a camera's she would have clicked a thousand shots then, but she had to fill her heart with that one shot clicked already and kept in the showcase out of her reach...
Now she finished it with,
'Oh, What of those waterfalls
Falling on the earth tirelessly
If couldn't dry an eye's drop
With your fingertip...'
