Karan Johar
Karan is still glowing with the transformation he went through when he faced the camera in New York to shoot for the cover of a fashion magazine. From a gawky, fat teenager to modelling as a style icon, Karan himself cannot believe the journey. He says, "As a child, I was nowhere close to being presentable, forget being stylish. From a fat child, whom nothing really fitted, to being here is unbelievable. I feel more proud today than even being a film-maker."
Perhaps the friendliest man in the industry, Karan says he hates siding with any of his friends when two of them are fighting. "Sitting on the fence is the best thing to do. My father (filmmaker Yash Johar) always told me that it is most important to be a good human being before anything else. I do tend to get involved with the lives of some people who matter, but as long as I don't make judgements, I should be fine. I truly want to be known by my friends as someone who has been there when they needed me and to whom I have done no wrong. Honestly, very few people really matter to me and they understand me well enough."
Karan says his friends Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri's relationship is the best he has ever seen. "My father used to say that SRK is the finest human being he has ever met. I will go one step further and say there can be no better woman than Gauri. Their relationship is so beautiful and they have the most amazing marriage ever. For someone like me who is so cynical about the institution of marriage, they re-instate my belief in such relationships. I hate to say too much about them because I feel unko nazar lag jayegi."
Karan says he longs for such a companionship, "I wish even if I get 20 percent of what they have, it will be enough for me. Shah Rukh and Gauri know each other for almost twenty years now and they have had only each other all these years. They have only grown in this relationship," he says.
But he personally has no more wishes. "As a child I had many dreams. I wanted to be a designer, a journalist and a filmmaker, and now all of them have come true. I turned designer when I did SRK's clothes, I turned journalist when I did my show on television and a filmmaker I am. I am looking forward to newer dreams. I am scared I won't be left with any so I sleep hard these days to dream of new things," he says with a guffaw.
