The discovery of extraterrestrial life would be the most dramatic scientific, social and religious event in history. Many of our values would change as we realise that we are not unique. Life would then be a normal part of the evolution of the Universe rather than a special event confined to Earth. The repercussions would reverberate over all disciplines for many years.

I loved your finishing statement Deepak.
Given that ideal proximity / distance from the sun provides us an ideal environment as life-forms on earth, we see no reason to believe that life forms very similar to us would thrive in the solar system elsewhere. I am not sure if we have justifiable financial resurces to take the quest beyond our solar system.
The trouble with us looking for life on other planets nearby is that we are aware of water based life- such as ours. How about other life beyond our detection? 😃.. I never comment on extraterrestrial life since I am not sure we have adequate technology to identify other life forms that are say not C H O .. based 😳 I could be wrong and never worked for NASA yet, but their obsessive quest for water on other planets makes me wonder if that's all they can factually relate to as existence of life.. As long as water is the limiting factor, I am a bit paranoid. Life need not be carb, protein, lipid.. So how do we detect something that we are perhaps not even looking for? 😳
