Chapter 1
Ayaan sat in his car staring at the house in front of him and sighed. Apparently, his brother, Asad had signed him up as one of the eligible bachelors at a charity dating event. He had known nothing about it till he'd received a call this morning from his older brother.
"You have a date tonight, with a Ms. Sheikh."Asad announced over the phone.
"I'm not going on another blind date." Ayaan shook his head. "The last time ended horribly."
"This isn't just some blind date. Some woman paid a lot of money at the charity even last night for a date with you. I had put your name and photo down with all the other eligible men. It is for a good cause."
"Not for me. Why don't you go?" Ayaan had queried.
"One, because she asked for you, and two, I'm married, if you've forgotten. Besides it will be good for you."
Ayaan had tried to talk his way out of the date but Asad hadn't budged. He knew his brother's wife might have put him up to it. Lately they both seemed to be taking an added interest in his love life, especially Zoya.
Asad had given him directions to the woman's house, and told him to pick her up at eight in the evening.
It was quarter past eight now, as he sat in the driveway, with half a mind to leave. Judging by the small house, it didn't really look like the lady could afford what she'd paid to have a date with him. Besides what kind of woman decided to date someone just like that based on just a photo and actually pay money too.
He stared at the digital clock of his car again, and sighed. He turned the ignition off, and straightened his jacket before heading to the house to pick up his date.

Humeira didn't know what had got into her eleven year old daughter. "Aren't you getting ready yet? It's already quarter past eight. We were supposed to leave the house at eight."
Her daughter frowned in response. "Ammi, aren't you going to wear the pink salwar suit? Pink looks so much better on you. This beige suit looks outdated."
"Ayrah, have you gone mad? I just asked you if you're getting ready, and you're picking faults with my clothes. We're just going to Zoya Khala's house for dinner. It doesn't matter what I wear. Now go get ready."
Ayrah pouted at her mom, "But..."
"No but. Now go change."Humeira interrupted and ushered her daughter out of her own room. She shook her head at her daughter's odd behavior. Lately Ayrah's demeanor had changed. She'd become more private, more secretive, not sharing as easily as she used to. She wondered if it was naturally a part of her growth or if she was still adjusting to the death of her father.
Maybe uprooting Ayrah from Bhopal and bringing her New York wasn't a good idea, but after Haider's death, life in Bhopal had become difficult, and Zoya had encouraged her to come to New York. Initially Ayrah had seemed excited, but as of late her usually outgoing daughter had become more withdrawn. She wondered if Ayrah was having and difficulty at school maybe.
The doorbell ringing interrupted her thought. She quickly called out to her daughter to hurry up before heading downstairs to open to the door.

When the front door opened, whatever words Ayaan had hoped to say stuck in his throat.
The lady staring back at him had to be nearly seventy years old. She stood there squinting at him in her pajamas, even though she wore the widest rimmed glasses Ayaan had ever seen.
"May I help you?"
"I think I'm supposed to meet your daughter?" Ayaan spoke hesitantly.
"I'm the only one who lives here." The old lady frowned at him. "Who are you?"
"You don't look like a Ms. Sheikh."Ayaan uttered.
"Oh they live next door. You must have the wrong house number."The old lady stepped out and pointed in the left direction. Ayaan followed the direction of her finger and nodded his thanks.
He followed the path to next house and found the door of the house already open.
He heard her before he saw her. Her voice loud and clear, making him pause by the door.
It couldn't be her. Could it? Could it really be her?
Then she turned around to close the door, and his eyes confirmed what his ears had suspected.
It was her. Humeira.
She spotted him just before she closed the door completely, her own hands stilling mid way as she stared back at him.
He saw shock at first, her eyes scanning him with fervor, and then the smallest of smiles flitted across her lips for a mere second before it was replaced by a frown. Then finally anger seemed to set in, as he saw her nose wrinkle familiarly.
He smiled. It was the only response he could muster.
"Humeira." He whispered her name, worried for a second if his mind was playing some cruel trick.
Humeira bit her lips. Her name from his lips confirmed that it truly was Ayaan standing at her doorstep. After so many years without a single word, there he stood, calling her name, like it hadn't been nearly thirteen years since she'd last seen him.
"You know if you wanted a date with me. You should have just asked. You didn't have to pay for it."Ayaan attempted to tease her.
Humeira shook her head, but didn't say anything.
"I, uh, brought you flowers." Ayaan held out his hand then realized that he'd forgotten those in the car. "...and they are in the car.
Humeira stared at his empty hands. "I have to go." She finally uttered. She turned away from him and called out the same name he'd heard her utter before.
"Ayrah!"
"Humeira?"
"Ayaan, please! I have to go. I cannot..." Humeira paused to compose herself. "Just please."
Ayaan felt confused. Why had she paid for a date and was now asking him to go? He didn't understand.
"Look if you didn't want to meet me. Why did you pay for the date? Why have me come here, only to go?"
It was Humeira's turn to feel confused. "I didn't pay for any date. I don't know why you are here. Why now?"
"Ammi, Zoya khala cancelled dinner, so I'm going to go over to Reena's house tonight, if you don't mind." Ayrah spoke up from behind Humeira.
"What?" Humeira turned around to address her daughter, and noticed that she still hadn't changed. "When did she call? I didn't hear the phone ring."
"She texted me. I also spoke to Reena's mom. She said it's okay if I spend the night there. Is it okay?"
"It's okay, but..." Humeira paused to process her daughter's words, but before she could complete here sentence, her daughter quickly walked herself out, heading in the direction of her friend's house.
"What just happened?"Humeira was talking more to herself.
Ayaan who had watched the exchange, felt his warning bells go off as soon as he heard his sister-in-law's name in the conversation.
"I think we've just been set up."
