There are not many males here, which makes me think bollywood caters to women more than men.

Most of the movies are romances. They change the sceneray, characters, add a few fight scenes and protagonists but essentially the film is about a guy and girl who fall in love...or out of it.

Or am I simplifying Bollywood?

But what about Sci-fi, adventure, horror, bio , thrillers which appeal more to males but Bollywood movie studios rarely makes.

How does it work. They have Bollywood movies that release in cinemas and then import Hollywood films covering the other genres that Bollywood does not.

I mean do Sci fi, adventure and horror films even do good in India. Do Hollywood movies of that genre do well. Or most of the male population ain't interested.

I think Indian television caters to women and that's why they dominate there.

With Bollywood, it caters to a population that faces a lot of hardships. Ultimately, they want the masala movies - romance, action, comedy - everything! It's escapist cinema that provides hope somewhere.

Thank you,

I actually thought that aswell and it was my way of understanding Bollywood. The surreal, fantasy which at times can be an escape from reality and appeals to the mass population

Whilst Hollywood can do more movies based on reality, like drug addicts, criminals, bad politicians and have them do well at the box office. In reality life ain't really that harsh for the audience.

Most of the people viewing those films are comfortable middle income with a white picket fence house and two dogs, life insurance and if that all goes bust they have a social welfare system to fall back on.

I think Hollywood does it's fair share of fantasy/escapist movies too. Things like Harry Potter, LOTR, Transformers. But they have a larger budget so they can do justice with the effects. They tend to have a greater variety of movies produced too.

Bollywood caters to both audiences, romance is something that was prominent 60 years ago too, if both men and women didn't watch BW movies in cinemas then this genre would've died ages back.

Not generalising all men, but most BW movies have what caters to men, like action, humour and skin show.

Indian TV definitely caters to women though.
