Is there a difference between an epic and mythology?

when we pray krishna he comes ...so epic was not just a story its a history like a biography

Well now in schools mahabharat is taught as his history, history books in 12th std. Have whole section for it.
Due to it being history and still having supernatural mystic elements in it which is debated as truth or fiction by different people, some of it is myth which either you believe or you dont.
There is a major diff. B/w fiction and myth.

Ofcourse, an epic is considered to be 'a word of mouth', something that is passed on through ages by word and refined further in writing. Mythology is fiction, tales we teach or are taught as a part of our religion (In this case). So I've always been confused. Mahabharat is in many ways a part of Hindu mythology because of some obvious reasons and yet it is the longest epic of the world!
