My daughter asked me the meaning of Tulasi and it's importance in Hinduisim and did some research.I thought of sharing with you all. As we all know Tulasi in Sanskrit means Devi, consort of Vishnu.
Tulsi or Tulasi or Holy basil is a sacred plant in Hinduiasim.Hindus regard it as an early manifestation of Goddess Tulsi ,a consort of God Vi
shnu. The offering of the leaves is mandatory in ritualistic worship of Vishnu and his forms like Krishna and Vithoba.
In Hindu mythology,Tulsi(matchless) is known as Vaishnavi(belonging to Vishnu)
Vishnu Vallabha( beloved of Vishnu)
HariPriya(beloved of Vishnu) Vishnu Tulsi.
Tulsi with green leaves called Shri-Tulsi.Shri is a synonym for Lakshmi, the principal consort of Vishnu.
The variety is also known as Rama Tulsi(bright tulsi).Rama is also principal avatars of Vishnu.
The Tulsi with dark green leaves and purple stem is shyama tulsi(dark Tulsi) or Krishna tulsi.Krishna is also a prominent avatar of tulsi. The variety is considered especially sacred to Krishna as it's purple color is similar to Krishna dark complexion.
Tulsi plant is regarded as a threshold between heaven and earth.

Thank you Tulasi for this well meaning and religiously relevant post !

Ocimum tenuiflorum, also known as Ocimum sanctum, Holy basil, or tulas, is an aromatic plant in the family Lamiaceae which is native to the Indian Subcontinent and widespread as a cultivated plant . It is much branched subshrub, 30-60 cm tall with hairy stems and simple green or purple leaves that are strongly scented.

Tulasi is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely known across the Indian Subcontinent as a medicinal plant and an herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda, and has an important role within the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving holy basil plants or leaves!!

According to Vaishnavas, it is believed in Puranas that during Samudra Manthana when the gods win the ocean-churning against asuras, Dhanvantari comes up from the ocean with Amrita in hand for the gods. Dhanvantari (the divine medico) sheds happy tears and when the first drop falls in Amrita it forms Tulasi. In the ceremony of Tulasi Vivaha, tulasi is ceremonially married to Krishna annually on the eleventh day of the waxing moon or twelfth of the month of Kartika in the lunar calendar. This day also marks the end of the four-month Cturmsya period, which is considered inauspicious for weddings and other rituals, so the day inaugurates the annual marriage season in India. The ritual lighting of lamps each evening during Kartika includes the worship of the tulasi plant, which is held to be auspicious for the home. Vaishnavas especially follow the daily worship of tulasi during Kartika masa !

Vaishnavas traditionally use japa mlas made from tulas stems or roots, which are an important symbol of initiation. Tulasi malasa are considered to be auspicious for the wearer, and believed to put them under the protection of Hanuman. They have such a strong association with Vaishnavas, that followers of Hanuman are known as "those who bear the tulasi round the neck".

Some laboratory experiments on extracts of Ocimum tenuiflorum have indicated they may have potential in future pharmaceutical applications in the field of cancer treatment, and mitigating the effects of radiation exposure.

Tulasi extracts have antibacterial activity against E . coli !!

Tulasi thanks for the information.😊 Tulsi is favourite of lord Vekatesh. Thare is a belief that the Lord refuses to take prasad if offered without tulsi leaves. Tulsi has medicinal properties. It sanctifies the enviornment.
We plant tulsi in our homes either for worshiping or for purifying the enviornment.

The above video is in telugu,in brief it tells the importance of Tulasi.Tu means death and Lasi means has won over death. In Hinduisim every household must have this plant. The importance of Tulasi is mentioned in sakanda Puranas,Garuda Puranas etc and also in Vedas .As we all know Tulasi Devi is favorite of Vishnu.
Tulasi plant is worshiped by all people. The times Tulasi leaves should not be plucked are afternoon, evening and night times. The days you shud not pluck the leaves are Tuesdays ,Ekadasi, pournami, astami ,death in the family and some one born in the family then for ten days. When you pluck the leaves make sure you are very clean.when sun moves from one raasi to another raasi(sign)we shud not pluck the leaves.Remaining days we can pluck the leaves and clean it.you can offer these leaves on the days you can't touch the plant.
Lord Ganesha doesn't like to be worshipped by Tulasi leaves except on Ganesh pooja.

As far as I know Vrinda is called as Tulasi . I mean Lord Vishnu came in disguise as Jalandhar just to make her "Pavitrata "break , and let Jalandhar die . And after knowing the truth she kills herself. But Lord Vishnu transfers her soul into a plant which is called tulasi.
Which is so pure yet impure. And that's the reason people won't keep it inside their house. How ever pure it was considered it was kept outside the house 😊
