Chapter One: Betrayal
It had been three days since he had come back home. An important mission had come up, he had said and everyone had believed him not knowing that it was just a blatant lie. Yes, a lie. He had wanted to stay alone, all alone or maybe it was just another excuse to stay away from her, away from his Parvati. She had come in his life bringing along the perfect storm.' He wanted to let her know that he had not changed, that he never will. . He wished he could show her how she didn't mean anything to him and how he tried to make himself believe it. He had started looking for her. She was in him all along as she had become a part of him
Yes, Rudra Pratap Ranawat loved her. He loved his wife privately, intensely, passionately and without recourse. She had become to him what oil was to fire. His life was...her. But he was not ready for a heartbreak. He had already suffered enough and he wouldn't have been able to survive if she betrayed him. He had to let her go. He had to go away from her, not only for his sanity but also for hers. He didn't deserve her, he had always thought. She was a delicate titli and he was a jallad. They were not meant to be together. He was fighting a war, a war between his mind and heart. He wanted to be somewhere he would find solace from his inner turmoil, somewhere he would be able to forget his Paro. He immediately knew the answer. Laila...
She had waited at the dining table every night for the past three days hoping that her Rudra would show up. She had hoped for the last three painful days that she would get a glimpse of him. But alas she could only hope. She had fallen in love with him slowly and then all at once. For her, her husband was her protector, he was her everything. In her desire to be with him forever all her other desires had melted away. She wanted him to tell her that he loved her, she wanted him to come back to her, to haunt her as from all the dreams that haunted her, he was her favorite. Seeking him healed her. She knew he would come to her one day, she knew that day will come when he would be hers, when he would declare his love for her. She had seen it in his eyes, his eyes which were as deep as an ocean. She just had to wait and she did, for all these months.
It had been three days and there was no sign of him. She had become an insomniac and was getting restless. Had something happened to him? No, she had immediately brushed away her thoughts. Nothing would happen to her Rudra. She then knew what she had to do. She called up her Aman Bhai-sa to know about him. He was in his quarter all along, Aman had said. He was safe, he had told her and she had breathed out a sigh of relief. She had then decided to make Rudra's favourite Aloo ki sabzi and deliver it to him. He must not be eating properly, she knew. Packing the food in a lunch-box she had left for the BSD headquarters, ecstatic at the thought that she would be able to see him, to talk to him and maybe feel him. She knew where Rudra's room was. They had been there before. He had kept her there to keep her safe from Tejawat. To keep her safe from all the problems that came her way.
She had run with the food basket in her hand, her happiness knowing no bounds. She had knocked on the room's door, waiting her Rudra to greet her with a smile, his mesmerizing smile. She had not received an answer. She had knocked again, this time to come face to face with the girl she had seen at her Haldi ceremony, the girl who had tried to kill her, the girl who was now standing in her husband's room in a deep-neck choli whose dori had been tied untidily or quickly so she could open the door. Parvati had tilted her head to see her Rudra lying in his bed with just a white blanket to hide his nakedness. She felt nauseatic. Her whole world came crashing down. She looked at her Rudra who was asleep and then at laila who gave her a vicious smile, a smile showing her that she had won. The girl who always had something to say was now speechless. A lone tear rolled down her cheek and she left without saying a word. She wanted to be alone; she wanted to run away from the sight that made her heart groan in pain. The soul of her soul had betrayed her. The skies had fallen all at once. She felt unwanted and unloved. She had lost her battle. So this was what the eight year long relationship between Rudra and Laila was about. She had been living a lie as Rudra had never loved her, she thought. She wandered through the desert for hours not wanting to go back to the place which she considered as her home now. Dreams, wishes and falling stars, all had turned out to be lies. He had left her in the abyss where she was even unable to find herself. She then cried, cried as if there was no tomorrow, as if crying would fill the aching void in her heart. She slapped herself and pulled her hair cursing herself, cursing her fate and screaming Rudra's name before fainting on the burning desert floor.
