Hey!

I am now going thru this phase after high skl completion n choosing the unis courses etc.. and I m right now very very extremely confused and i thought this could be a gd platform to basically garner your opinions on which is better..

Doing a general business honours degree in one of the best ranking universities VS doing a degree with a specialisation in particular field in a good enough university ?

actually i probably would never have thought abt posting this topic but i do need some big time help in some decision making by next week.

The thing is I have got accepted for a Bachelor of Sci (hons) in Business under Uni of London (London sch of econz n political science) and at the same time, also for the Bachelor of Business(Marketing) under RMIT (Royal melbourne institute of tech uni) which allows me to specialise in marketing basically..

So, basically UOL/LSE is one of the top unis in the world but the degree i have got accepted is a general honours business degree.
As for RMIT, although it is well recognised (but not as well as UOL/LSE), it gives me an opportunity to specialise/major in marketing itself.

My parents have left it to me to choose but i am perplexed abt wat to do. My friends have told me that both the reputation and the course matters. but which one should matter more?

So i am veryyyyy confused which to choose. Coz without doubt going by the reputation of UOL/LSE, it should be the better choice. But then again, going by the course i got accepted to .. RMIT allows me to specialise in a particular field of business (marketing)
.... and erm specialisation is better than a general degree supposedly.

Its a big decision and i just wanna ask what you guys feel abt doing a general honours degree at one of the best universities VS doing a degree with a specialised major at a good enough uni ?

Is specialisation more important compared to a general hons degree from one of the top colleges?

Bahh. sorry for taking up your time but it would be nice if i could get some kinda response. I am in a very bad dilemma.

thankz loadssss n i hope i didn't bore you ppl.

😆 😆 😆

sorry, am amused ... I know what you mean though. I hate it when decision is left as mine to make. How great is that! 😆 😆 ... one of the benefits of being a grown up. 😭

I am not in business field, so won't be able to give much of advice on which one is a better option.

Glamourous,

First of all congratz on getting admission in such good schools. Now coming back to your dilemma of general vs. specialized degree. I have few questions for you. Try to answer them as honestly as you can. Here they go:

1. Do you want to pursue a masters degree after completing the B.S.?

2. Are you really inclined towards Marketing major or you are considering it only because it has been offered to you?

3. If you are inclined towards Marketing, then please do some soul searching and come up with a reason why you want this major - is it because it's glamorous/you have taken some marketing course in high school and really liked it etc.

4. What do you know about other courses with in Business stream - courses like Finance, accounting, tax, auditing etc?

Now, let me explain how these questions will help you sweetie.

First of all, it depends how much exposure you have of various courses, both core and elective, comprising the business stream. If you don't know much about all the possible majors business stream offers, how could you make sure that you want to make a career in marketing only and not in Finance or tax consulting?

Think objectively. If your future plans include going for a masters, then I would suggest go with the B.S. Honors general degree at that prestigious school. Experience all the different options business degree opens for you and choose the one that interests you most and is commercially viable in job market as well. There are definitely far more finance, tax, accounting track jobs out in the market than marketing....based on my personal experience.

After doing the general degree from this reputed school, not only you can choose a specialized masters, including marketing or corporate law...whatever you want to do, but you can also go for an internship in the field that interests you most before you pursue your masters. The internship will provide the valuable experience of figuring out yourself how different the real world jobs can be from class room guided case studies.

If you are absolutely certain that marketing it is for you, then go for the specialized degree.

I hope I cleared your doubts a bit rather than confusing you further. I myself was a business major once and I did my MS in auditing. My BS was in accounting. But I knew that I wanted to specialize in accounting. Before that, I had a BS Honores degree in Home Science with major in textiles and apparel designing...which I still wonder why I did in the first place. So, trust me sweetie, I know where you are coming from. I wish I could make this decision even more easy for you but beyond a certain point, unfortunately, it is up to you kids to start taking those baby steps towards grown up world and start making your own decisions.

All the best to you in all your future endeavors - no matter what you choose. 😊

😆😆😆, Dilemna Dilemna, when I was going to school, I was of the thought maybe it is a good idea to do specialization in a field, so job research becomes easier. So I got into a speclaized program that produces about 100 proffesionals in a country with population over 80 crores. The industry is the most profit making industry in the world for last 20-30 years.

The education we got was really top notch, our research work got published in the most recognized journal

So guess what after 4 years when 40 of us graduated, only 3 have been able to get a job in the field(across the whole world).

I am not telling you to go one way or the other, but if you decide to get into a specialized area, make very certain that the education itself is enough

Else it might be a good idea to go to a good school, look what you find interesting and choose your coursework oriented towards that(offcourse if you have a choice)

Again just another opinion and good luck😛

Three words - location, location, location...

Do you want to go to Melbourne, or London? What you do doesn't matter as much as how you do it. Do it at a place you like, where you feel you can adjust, and where you can spend the next 4 years of your life.

The degree you pursue or the university you attend are important considerations - but the bottom line always comes down to the individual. You can go to the best place, if you're not happy there, you won't do well.

I've gone to fairly ordinary universities in Houston, primarily because my family lives here. It makes life much easier, since I don't have to worry about anything other than school, which in turn translates to good performance.

i think u should really look through the course contents that both degrees are offering and choose what suits u best..im in somewhat a similar situation..i chose to do the BA in Events rather then a smaller diploma in wedding planning (what id rather specialise in)...now im regrestting it...i plan 2 complete this year and then go and do the diploma as it is offering what i specifficaly want rather then bits of it..it has been a waste of a year of my life...aswell as a whole lot of money.... 😕 but evry1 is defferent
location is also important..as its where ul spend ure tyme....most of it
