CHAPTER 4. ESCAPE PLAN HITS A SNAG!

In the nearby area a man's phone rang. The man, well muscled and grim faced, picked up the call. He did not say anything and after listening for a while he mumbled, "Haan! Jaanta hun! Geet Handa ko kaun nahi jaanta?" He listened for a while and then grinned grotesquely, "Haan! Hojaayega! Main Geet nu uthaake ke twadde gar vich le aawaanga!" After listening for few seconds, he smiled dementedly, "Toh jeep mein jaatte dekha hai use! Dekhlunga us kudi nu aur us jeep nu! Tussi fikar na karo Paajji! Tussi shaddi ki tayyariyaan karo. Shaddi ki lakh lakh vadaayiyaan!" As he cut the phone he let out a loud laugh and walked away.

Meanwhile, at the biggest Kothi in Hoshiarpur, Dev sat on his throne like chair and smirked, "Ab bata Geet! Kitthe jaayegi tu mennu chadke! Main toh tujhe haasil karke hi ravaanga." Then his face became serious and he glared at a distance with venom spitting out of his mouth, "Aur jab tu Dulhan banke aayegi na toh tujhe bataaunga ki Dev Singh Khurana ke khilaaf jaane ka natija ki honda hai. Nahi chodunga main tujhe. Kabhi nahi!"

Maan looked at the girl sleeping in the passenger seat. Never had he met such a fiery girl! Sure he had met many girls who were feisty but a girl who was ready to kill him, now that was a first. He looked at the girl's innocent face. When he had first met her, his mind was made up about her; she was just like one of those helpless damsels in distress. They cry, they plead but in the end of day were weak and idiots. It was only when the girl picked up the stick and started fighting back that his view took a 360 degree turn. She was not a damsel in distress that was for sure! Never had he seen a girl fight for herself in such a manner. At that moment, he felt like he was seeing Kali Ma herself. And then someone tried to hit her from behind and he had jumped into the fray. But once the fight ended the girl ran away. That was another first for him. After seeing him fight, girls had the habit of waiting and flirting with him but this girl had vanished.

Maan had forgotten about the incident by the time he sat in his jeep and started driving towards Dilli. And then she was back in his life by hiding in his jeep to escape. If it had been any other girl he would have just thrown her out of his jeep and drove away. But this was a girl who fought for herself. This girl had garnered his respect by one simple act; and that was fighting for her right instead of sitting and crying. He had to help her out so that the fire in her to fight back would not be doused by this small minded people.

When Geet had sat beside him, he never thought her story would be this complicated. But when she had shouted at him, he got the basic idea about her story. Dev killed her family and only because she said no to him! He knew that Dev was cruel. Afterall he had faced it firsthand many times. But this cruel he did not know! That is when he made the decision. He would make sure this girl was safe from Dev! He would not let her life be destroyed. This girl had a fighting spirit in her and he refused to let it crush due to Dev. Dev already had almost destroyed his life. If he could save this girl this would be his revenge for the hurt Dev and his mother had heaped upon him. He took a deep breath and concentrated on driving. They had to pass the ghats and the hills surrounding the Hoshiarpur Village before Dev's men reached them as the areas near the roads housed many of Dev's men. Once they were clear of ghats, Maan was sure that they were much safer from Dev. Suddenly, his eyes widened as he noticed around 20 men standing on the road blocking it with knife and wooden sticks in their hands. Lagta hai Dev ke aadmi hai! Main sahi tha! Dev ki pahunch in pahaadiyon mein bhi hain! He narrowed his eyes. Lagta hai in ladkiyon ko le jaane aaye hain! Par agar woh Dev Khurana hai toh main Maan Khurana hoon! In ladkiyon ko toh main Dev se bachaakar hi dum lunga! He nudged Geet with his hand and she sat up in a jerk. That is when he realized that she was not deeply asleep. But then how could she be with Dev's men behind her? Maan mused.

Geet noticed the men and her eyes hardened. "Yeh kaun hai?", she whispered harshly. Maan stopped the jeep, "Dev ke aadmi! Aur kaun!" Geet looked at him in shock, "Itne jaldi par yahaan kaise?" Maan smirked, "Tumhein kya laga? Dev ke aadmi sirf gaao mein hai. Woh in pahaadiyon mein bhi hain! Aur jab tak hum in pahaadiyon aur jungle ko paar nahi karte, humein tab tak inse khatra hai! Tum ek kaam karo! Apni behen ko lo aur bhaag jaao! Main tab tak inko rokta hun!" Geet shook her head, "Aap hi ne abhi kahaa na ki Dev ke log har jagah hain! Agar hum kahin bhaagenge toh aapko kya lagta hai woh humein pakdenge nahi?" Maan looked at her, "Toh phir?" Geet glared at the men, "Ya toh Rajji sahi salaamat Dilli pahunchegi ya mera yahaan dum tootega! Par main inke saath nahi jaaungi! Aur naahi main yahaan se bhaagungi! Is waqt ya toh in gundo ki dhulaai hogi ya toh hum teeno ladte ladte yahin shaheed honge!" Maan understood her feelings. Given such options, even he would choose to die rather than go back to Hoshiarpur. He gave her a nod and got down the jeep. He turned to look at her, "Apni ladaai ladne ke liye tayyaar ho jaao! Kyunki agar mujhe kuch hua toh inke aur tumhaare beech koi deewaar bachi nahi hogi!" Geet nodded with determination. Maan turned back and walked towards the men. He stood before them, "Jara rasta denge! Humein yahaan se jaana hai!" A man from the group walked ahead making Maan realize that this was the leader of the group. The man was well muscled and grim faced, his beady eyes glittering with something malevolent in them. Maan could sense that this man was dangerous. The man spoke in a gruff voice, "Jaane denge! Bas o kudi mennu de do! Phir tussi jitthe jaana hai jaao!" Maan smirked and spoke with Punjabi accent, "Ladki toh paaji mere kol hi rehni hai. Tussi jo karna hai karlo!" He turned around to walk away only for the man to raise his hand to hit him. Maan saw on the floor the man's shadow raise his arm and he turned around and grabbed the man's hand. Maan looked at him with amusement, "Oh Kakke! Piche se vaar karna galat baat hai!" Saying this, Maan sent a well aimed kick his way. The man fell down backwards and this was enough to make the other men fight with Maan. Maan dodged a hit and kicked one man in stomach. He gave one man a punch on his face breaking his nose and hit his elbow into other's chest. He grabbed a stick from one of the men and defended himself with it against the knives. He fought with grace of trained warrior and more than few men fell unconscious due to his blows. Even with odds against him, he had a feeling he would win this fight.

Geet was not a girl to sit aside and worry. She got down from the jeep and sneaked around. By then Rajji was awake and was staring at the fight with horror filled eyes. Geet picked a stick from the men lying down after getting beaten by Maan. She handed the stick to Rajji, "Koi paas aayena, toh rakh dena ek!" Rajji nodded still wide eyed at seeing her sweet sister acting so bold and strong. Geet took another stick from another man lying on the road and entered the melee. She hit as many as she could without interrupting Maan's fight. Anyone who neared her, got a hit on their head. Suddenly, a man came towards Maan from behind with a knife. "MAAN!", Geet shouted and Maan turned around. Seeing the knife, he moved out of the way but still the knife nicked his arm. Maan ignored it and grabbed the man's knife holding hand. He twisted the hand making the goon drop the knife. Maan smiled smugly and delivered a blow to the stomach making the goon drop down. Meanwhile, a man tried to grab Geet's stick from her. She pulled the stick away with her maximum effort but the man was stronger. Then, Geet had an idea and she raised her knee and delivered a blow to the man's family jewels. He collapsed that moment and Geet let out a giggle. Soon, Geet and Maan fought side by side with Geet hitting whoever came close and Maan delivering blows after blows on the men. Soon, all the men were on the floor and Geet and Maan let out a sigh of relief.

As Maan and Geet neared the jeep, they saw a man collapsed near the back of the jeep and they looked at Rajji sitting in the back. She smiled uneasily, "Aap hi ne kahaa tha na Didi ki koi paas aaye toh rakh dena ek! Rakh diya!" Geet smiled proudly while Maan shook his head, "Lagta hai poora khandaan Sherniyon se bhara pada hai!" Geet let out a giggle at his words. As they walked to their seats, Maan stopped, "Arre! Yeh tyre toh puncture hai!", he looked at the tyre under the driver's seat. Geet looked at the tyres in the passenger seat's side, "Is side toh dono puncture hai!" "Didi!", Rajji shouted, "Yeh aadmi neeche kuch kar raha tha jab maine use maara!" "Shit!", Maan growled. "Lagta hai usne saare tyres puncture kar diye!" Geet bit her lip nervously, "Ab kya?" Maan shrugged, "Gaadi toh yahi chodni hogi! Waisi bhi rental gaadi hai! Aage jo sheher hai wahaan pe book ki thi! Ek baar us sheher pahunch gaye, udhar keh denge gaadi le jaane ko!" Geet huffed, "Main humaare baare mein pooch rahi hun!" Maan rolled his eyes, "Hum? Hum teeno challenge! Jungle ke raaste bade sheher. Is gaadi mein jaldi pahunchte ab kal subah pahunchenge!" Rajji spoke up, "Par road ke raaste bhi toh chalke jaa sakte hain!"Geet nodded but Maan shook his head, "Nahi! Pata nahi aur kitne aise namoone milenge raste mein. In sabke ghar iss raste ke aas paas hi hain. Behtar hoga hum jungle ke raaste yeh saare ghat ko paar kar lein!" Rajji and Geet nodded and all three picked up their bags from the back of the jeep and marched towards the Jungle.
