CHAPTER 2. GEET ESCAPES!
It was early in the morning when the window in the back of the house opened. As the darkness had yet to go away, no one noticed the window open. A bag was thrown out of the window first and following it was a girl dressed in simple salwar kameez with a jhola on her shoulder with the strap worn across her body. She jumped down and picked up her bag. She turned around and made sure that the coast was clear. Next she signaled to someone in the room and soon another girl, a bit younger than the first one, clad in similar outfit to elder girl, jumped out holding another bag and both the girls ran from there holding hands. The girls were none other than the Handa girls with Geet being the first one who jumped out and Rajji being the other one. The bag which Geet carried looked more like a college kid's bag and was filled with very few clothes and their certificates of passing and extracurricular activities while her jhola contained some money and other things. Rajji's bag had her clothes and some warm clothes for winter. Geet's plan to escape was quite simple. Reach her childhood friend Pinky's house in Dilli, get a job while enrolling her little sister in a good college.
Geet and Rajji ran through the lanes of their village all the while trying to make minimal noise. Today was Geet's wedding day and she planned to reach the outskirts of her village by the time the groom side noticed her absence. They reached the acres of farms surrounding the village and started crossing them. This was a longer route to the bus stop but using the shorter route meant going through the main village square and Geet was not willing to take the risk of getting exposed.
After running for almost an hour, they reached the bus stop. Both smiled at each other in relief. They had made it! Both hugged each other and walked towards the ticket counter. Suddenly, someone placed a hand on Geet's shoulder. Geet's breath hitched and she turned around in dread. When she noticed who was behind her, her face became pale while Rajji's face showed horror. There were few goons standing in front of them with the man in lead leering at her. "Kahaan chali Bhabhiji?", the man sneered and Geet gulped. She gripped Rajji's hand tightly with one hand while her other hand sneaked into her bag unnoticed by the man. The man spoke again, "Arre! Bhabhiji! Aise kaise aap jaa sakti hain? Aaj toh aapki shaadi hai! Chaliye! Chaliye! Ghar chaliye! Saahab aapka intezaar kar rahe hain!" Geet's hand reached the pouch kept safely in the jhola which contained mirchi powder. She grabbed a fistful of the powder in her hands. The man tried to grab Geet's arms when Geet whispered, "Bhaag!" and threw the mirchi powder that was in her hand into the goons' eyes. As the goons screamed in pain, Geet ran away dragging Rajji with her.
Geet and Rajji ran around looking for a hiding place but the goons soon caught up with them. Geet begged whoever she saw on road to help her but no one listened. Finally they were cornered in an area where except Geet and Rajji there was only one tea stall open with the chai waala preparing tea and a man sitting on a nearby bench sipping the tea. They were surrounded by nothing but empty and dilapidated buildings with a jeep parked near one of them. Geet had the thought of going and hiding into the one of the buildings but they would be more cornered than they were now. She looked around in worry while hugging a crying Rajji tightly. The goons had yet to find them but she was sure that they would be here in few minutes. She looked at the stall owner and ran towards him, "Satsriyakal! Kaake! Thodi humaari madat kardo! Kuch gunde humaare peeche pade hain!" She pleaded and pleaded but the man refused, "Behenji! Mennu is sab mein padna nahi hain! Tussi jaaao!" Geet felt her eyes tearing up as she looked around helplessly. She again pleaded with the man, "Please Bhai saab! Apni behen samajhke madat kardo!" But the man still refused. Geet looked around searching for help. Suddenly, her eyes fell on the man drinking tea while seated on the bench. He was dressed in black vest and jeans with his shirt hanging on his shoulder. He had a looks of a body builder with toned arms and bulging biceps. She ran towards him and fell on her knees. She joined her hands and pleaded to him, "Tussi toh humaari madat kardo! Humein bachaa do! Woh log meri behen nu maar daalenge!" Rajji stood nearby still crying. "Please! Sirji! Humein bacha lo!", Geet again pleaded. The man who was still sipping the tea paused long enough to reply, "Aurat ho! Aur auratein toh Maa Kaali ka bhi roop hoti haina! Toh jaao aur lado khud!" He got up, paid for the tea and walked off towards the jeep parked nearby. Geet looked around helplessly as tears trailed through her cheeks. Ab kya karoon Babaji? Kaise apni aur Rajji ki jaan bachaaun? Kuch toh madat karo! But then she glanced at her weeping sister and wiped her tears. Mere poore ghar waalon ko maara hai tumne! Ab main tumhein Rajji ko maarne nahi doongi! Mar jaaungi lekin Rajji ko bachaakar dum loongi! She looked up. Babaji! Shakti do! She looked around searching for anything to help her and her eyes fell on an iron rod fallen on the floor nearby. Suddenly, she heard a roar of laughter and she looked up to see the goons coming towards them. She picked up the rod and signaled Rajji to stay near the tea stall. She walked towards the middle of the road and glared at the goons. Sahi kahaa us insaan ne! Hum auratein toh Maa Kaali ka roop bhi hoti hain! Mujhe aaj apne aur Rajji ke liye ladna hoga! Aajaao! Kamino! Aaj yeh Geet Handa dikhaayegi tumhein Maa Kaali ka roop! As soon as one of the goons neared her, she hefted the iron rod and hit him right on the head. He fell down in a moment. Geet glared at the rest of them running towards her. Aajaao! Kamino! Aajaao!
The man after drinking his tea went to start his jeep. These days' girls! So weak! He shook his head and tried to start the engine. But the engine refused to budge. He rolled his eyes. Lagta hai aaj mujhe deri hokar rahegi! Suddenly, he heard men run around and he turned to see atleast 15 men run towards the girls. He wondered what the girls had done to warrant such reaction from the goons. He leaned back and waited. Even though he told the girls to help themselves up he was not one of those who would leave someone helpless. So he would wait and watch! Soon, he would have to get into the fray to save these weak and helpless girls. Suddenly, the girl who had begged him for help picked up an iron rod nearby and suddenly a goon was down with her hit. The man raised his eyebrows impressed by the girl. As he watched the girl hit the rest of the men with the rod, he was getting more and more impressed. Very few girls had the bravery to go against such odds and not sit and cry. He was about to clap for one of the hits the girl delivered when he saw a goon approaching the girl from behind with another rod in his hand. The man frowned. One thing he hated was foul play! And hitting a person from the back was a big no-no in his books! So he got down from the jeep and jumped into the fray.
"DIDIII!", Geet heard Rajji scream and turned around only to see a rod coming towards her. Unable to react faster, she closed her eyes and waited for it to hit her. But no blow came. She opened her eyes to see the man, who few minutes before sat drinking tea from the stall, holding the rod in his hand trying to stop it from reaching her. He pushed the rod away and due to the force the goon with the rod stumbled away. Geet did not even have the time to thank him as another man came to hit her. Soon the fight began in earnest with the man hitting each of the goons with his bare hands and well aimed kicks and Geet hitting any goon coming near them with the rod. Soon, most of the goons were down on the ground while their leader ran away but not before promising to bring back more people with him for the girls. The man in the vest started dusting away his clothes. After removing dust from his vest and trouser he turned around to address the girls only to see an empty space. Yeh kithe gayi? Lagta hai bhaag gayi!! He looked around but the other girl was also missing. He frowned. Suddenly, his eyes fell on the floor where there was a neatly folded paper on the floor. He picked it up and opened it. There were only two words written on it, "Thank you!" He smiled tenderly and absentmindedly wondered who the girl was and why she was in so much trouble.
Soon, the man got into his jeep and drove away to the market in the outskirts of the village. He parked nearby and went shopping for some eatables. It took him an hour to complete his purchases and he came back and got back into his jeep. Then, he started the jeep and drove away not knowing that the girls he met an hour ago were hiding in the back of his jeep.

CHAPTER 3. MAAN AND GEET'S CONVO!
Geet smiled and thanked Babaji as the jeep started. She and Rajji had been run away the moment the fight had ended. After that they had gone towards the bus depot on the outskirts of the village to grab a bus to Dilli. They had caught the bus and climbed it. They sat down and waited for the bus to start when Rajji spotted Khurana's goons nearby searching for them. She noticed them climbing the nearby bus and she knew it was only matter of time before they would come and search their bus too. She had dragged Geet away from the bus and both hid behind a jeep nearby. The men climbed the bus they were in few minutes searching for them. That is when Geet had the idea of hiding inside the jeep. They climbed in the back and lied on the floor when suddenly a man sat in the driver's jeep. Geet swallowed and hoped that the man did not notice them. The last thing she needed was for the man to raise alarm. She heard the man speak, "Haan! Main abhi yahaan se nikal raha hoon!" Geet smiled. They were moving! Bas ab yeh gaadi shuru ho jaaye aur hum yahaan se bach niklein! Luckily, the man was busy in the phone and did not notice Geet looking out of the Jeep while lying on the floor. Right then the goons arrived in that area and Geet, who was on the lookout, lied flat on the floor hoping that they would not notice them. She was thankful to her Babaji that the jeep started right at that time or else they might have been caught.
After half hour of the jeep being driven, Geet looked at her little sister. Rajji was already asleep due to exhaustion due to running around so much. As Geet sat up to look around, her eyes reached the rear view mirror of the jeep where her eyes clashed with the eyes of the person driving the jeep. The eyes widened and soon the person driving stopped the jeep. Geet's eyes widened and she hoped that this person would help her. The person driving turned to look at her and both shouted in simultaneously, "TUM?" "AAP?" Geet was happy as she realized that the person who was driving the jeep was none other than the man who saved her from the goons. He looked at her in confusion and she realized that she owed him an explanation. "Mujhe maaf kar dijiye main aapke jeep mein aake baith gayi apni behen ke saath!" Noticing that he had not started blasting her, her confidence came up and she started talking confidently, "Main aur kya karti? Aur gunde aayenge is darr se main wahaan aapke liye chitti chodkar bhaag gayi! Socha tha Hoshiarpur ke baahar ke bazaar ke paas jo bus depot hai wahaan se bus pakdungi! Par wahaan par toh aur gunde aagaye the! Woh log mujhe dekhein usse pehle main aur Rajji aapki jeep mein aake chhup gaye! Lekin Babaji di sau mujhe nahi maaloom tha ki yeh aapki jeep hai! Please humein maaf kar dijiye!" The man stared at her for a while and then nodded. Geet smiled and then murmured nervously, "Kya aap humein Hoshiarpur se dur le jaa sakte hain please?" He frowned for a moment and then pointed to the front seat, "Aage aake baith jaao! Main tumhaara driver nahi hoon!" Geet was too happy at this point to get angry at his attitude. She made her sister comfortable at the back and came ahead to sit beside him. The man started driving. "Waise mera naam Geet hai aur meri behen ka naam Rajji!", she gave him a bright smile. When he did not say anything, she piped up, "Arre! Aapka naam toh bataayiye!" The man gave her a cursory glance and then focused on the road. She pouted a bit and turned away to look at the roads when he quietly replied, "Maan!" She turned back at him and smiled widely at him. Maan just gave her a glance and focused on the driving.
After a while, Maan asked, "Waise kahaan jaana hai aapko?" Geet replied, "Aap humein paas waale gaaon mein chod dijiye! Utna bas hai humaare liye!" Maan frowned, "Maine poocha kahaa jaana hai aapko? Yeh mere sawaal ka jawaab nahi hai!", he spoke in a stern voice. She smiled at him sarcastically, "Dilli jaana hai! Kyun? Aap kya humein wahaan tak chodne waale hain?" Maan nodded, "Main bhi wahin jaa raha hun! Aap dono ko aapke ghar tak chod dunga!" Geet frowned suspiciously at him, "Jee nahi! Thank you! Aap bas humein Dilli ke kisi bus stop par chod dijiye! Main meri saheli ko bula loongi humein pick up karne ke liye!" Maan gave her a glare, "Mere jeep mein jis waqt tumne kadam rakha use waqt se tum dono meri zimmedaari ho aur tum dono ko sahi salamat ghar pahunchaana mera kaam hai! Samjhi!" As he focused on the driving, he did not see Geet's eyes tearing up. Pind mein kitne log hain! Par kisine humein mehfooz rakhne ki koshish nahi ki! Lekin yeh ek anjaan hote hue bhi humaari madat kar rahe hain! Kaash yeh humaare pind mein hote toh aaj woh rakshas itni tabaahi kabhi bhi nahi macha paata! Hey Babaji! Inki zindagi mein sirf khushiyaan hi khushiyaan bharna!
As they travelled, Geet grinned happily as she stared at the greenery passing on the way. Bas! Kuch ghante aur phir main aur Rajji surakshit ho jaayenge! Then as she was looking around, her eyes reached a business card fallen on the jeep floor. It seemed to have fallen out of the man's pocket. She picked it up and read the name. She froze and stopped breathing. She read it again but the name did not change. She gulped and looked at the man beside her. She looked back at the card. She felt her heart hammer against her ribcage. She turned to Maan and asked quietly, "Aapka poora naam kya hai?" Maan frowned at the question. Geet felt that she would faint while she waited for his answer. After few moments, Maan answered, "Maan Singh Khurana!" That was enough for Geet. "Gaadi rokiye!", Geet's voice rang loud and clear. Maan looked at her in confusion, "Kya?" Geet glared at him, "Maine kahaa gaadi rokiye!" Maan frowned, "Par kyun?" Geet gritted her teeth, "Maine keh diya toh keh diya! Gaadi rokiye!" Maan pressed the brake and the jeep jerked to stop. Before he could say anything, Geet was out of his jeep. "Hey Listen!", Maan shouted but Geet was not interested in his words. She walked towards the back of the jeep and pulled out her bags. She was about to shake Rajji awake when someone caught her wrist. She looked up to see Maan holding her wrist, "Chodiye mujhe!" Maan glared at her, "Pehle bataao! Baat kya hai?" She tugged at her hand strongly and her hand came out of his grip. She glared back at him, "Main sab kuch jaanti hun. Aapki saari asliyat mere saamne aa chuki hai!" Maan frowned at her, "Kya bak rahi ho tum?" "Haan!", Geet shouted, "Mujhe pata hai ki aap ek dhoke baaz hain! Farebi hain! Makkaar hain!" Geet took deep breaths while Maan glared at her. How dare she insult him! How dare she give him such names! He grabbed her hand and her eyes widened. He dragged her from there and pushed her on the jeep's bonnet. He towered over and glared at her. She felt her heart beat in fear as she noticed his eyes almost popping out in anger. "Tum kya badbad kar rahi thi sab sach sach bataao!", Maan growled. Geet felt deep hatred inside her heart for Maan. She used all her strength to push him away and glared at him, "Aap Maan Singh Khurana haina! Hoshiarpur ke Khurana parivaar se jude haina aap?" He nodded all the while frowning. She smiled at him sarcastically and clapped her hands. He looked at her in confusion. "Waah! Kitni achchi family hai aapki aur kitne achche hain aap!", she spoke in a cold voice, "Ek Khurana ladka meri zindagi bighaadta hai aur doosra chala aata hai marham lagaane! Sab jaanti hun main! Mujhe ullu banaake Dev ke paas le jaana chaahte ho na?" Maan's eyes widened as he realized what she was talking about. He stood there in shock while Geet surged forward and grabbed his collar. "Kya bigaada tha maine Dev ka? Kya bigaada tha mere parivaar ne uska?" She pushed him away and he stumbled back. But before he could fall down he balanced himself. Geet started shouting, "HUMAARI KOI BHI GALTI NAHI THI PHIR BHI! PHIR BHI MERE PARIVAAR KA KHOON KAR DIYA GAYA!" Maan's eyes widened and he took a few steps back. Geet continued shouting, "MERA KASOOR KYA THA? YAHI NA KI MAINE DEV SE SHAADI KARNE SE INKAAR KAR DIYA!" She took a deep breath and her voice lowered a bit taking on a dull tone, "Meri ek inkaar ki sazaa mere poore parivaar ko de di! Maar daala un sabko!" She fell on her knees and started sobbing, "Maar daala unko! Ab Rajji ke siva kuch nahi bacha mera! Kuch nahi!" Suddenly, she got up and grabbed Maan's collar swiftly, her eyes taking up a crazed look. She growled in anger, "Lekin ab aur nahi! Nahi sahungi aur main! Babaji ki sau main Rajji ko sahi salamat Dilli pahunchaakar hi dum loongi. Aur iske liye mujhe tumhaara khoon bhi karna pade toh yahi sahi!" She glared at him with so much hatred that Maan could not say a word. Geet left him and walked towards the jeep. "Main Rajji ko lekar ja rahi hoon. Mere peeche aane ki koshish mat karna!"
Geet was about to grab her bag when Maan caught her hand. She glared at him but he calmly replied, "Meri baat toh sunlo! Phir tumhein main chod dunga!" "Nahi!", Geet spoke with anger filled voice, "Mujhe kuch nahi sunna!" She tried to pull her hand away but Maan gave her hand a strong jerk. She was jerked ahead and she slammed right into his chest. She looked at him and he pleaded, "Please Geet! Ek baar meri baat sunlo!" She pushed him away and took few deep breaths. Then she nodded. She turned around and folded her arms against her chest. She did not want to listen to him but he had saved her once. He deserved one chance atleast! But only one chance! Maan took a deep breath, "Mere parivar ne jo tumhaare saath kiya uske liye main tumse maafi nahi maang sakta kyunki unhonein jo kiya woh maafi ke laayak nahi hai! Lekin aaj abhi isi waqt main tumse ek waada jaroor kar sakta hun." She looked at him curiously and he continued, "Chaahe kuch bhi ho jaaye main tumhein aur tumhaari behen ko sahi salaamat Dilli pahunchaakar hi rahunga chaahe isliye mujhe kitni aur kathinaayiyaan jhelni pade!" Geet looked at him in shock. Why was he doing this? Yeh toh apne hi parivaar ke khilaaf jaa raha hain. Par kyun? Seeing that she was not convinced of his words, he pulled out his mobile and handed it to her. She took it after a moment of hesitation. "Ab main kisiko contact nahi kar sakta jab tak yeh mobile tumhaare paas hai. Chaahe toh ise switch off kar sakti ho!" She looked at the mobile and then at him. He pulled out his wallet and handed that to her too, "Yeh bhi apne paas rakhlo. Agar tumhein zara sa bhi lage ki main tumhein dhoka dunga toh mere paise aur phone lekar bhaag jaana!" He took a deep breath and looked at her, "Ab toh mere saath chalogi?" She stood there staring at him debating on whether to believe him or not. Maan noticed her confusion through her eyes and remained quiet wanting for her to take the decision. After a while, she nodded. Maan felt as if a heavy burden was removed from his chest. Both took the seats on the jeep and Maan drove away.
