I am scared about this chapter too...fingers crossed...

CHAPTER 16

Kushi's early morning instincts are proving to be right. The day is turning out to be extremely good for her. The press conference regarding Dhivya's case turned out well. Judgement was given to another case, which was in hearing for last one and half year, in their clients favour. The state government has selected her Women's Welfare Organization as the Best NGO of the year for their service to women.

Kushi was going through the FIR copy of Dhivya's case when she heard a knock. "Come in!" Kushi said raising her head to see Pooja's mother. Pooja was Kushi's class mate during her bachelor's degree. She was Kushi's first friend outside the orphanage. "Hello aunty! How are you? Please sit down!" Kushi welcomed her unexpected guest.
"I came here to talk about Pooja's divorce case." The elder one said in not so comfortable tone. Kushi nodded. "But, aunty, I am not handling that case. I handle only criminal cases. Savita anuty is handling it. You can discuss the case with her." Kushi said pointing towards her colleague's cabin. "I know. But I am here to talk with you, beta!" The visitor replied.
Kushi looked at the visitor suspiciously as she began to speak. "Pooja told me that you advised her to file divorce. Listen, beta, this is not right. No one in the family is happy with her decision. You please advice her to withdrew from the case." Kushi heaved a sigh in irritation. "For god sake, aunty! Your son-in-law has cheated your daughter! He broke her trust and he doesn't deserve her love."
The elder women leaned forward on the table. "I know that damadji has committed a mistake. But no one is perfect. We all commit mistakes. He was guilty of what he did and that's why he, himself, told Pooja about it asking for her forgiveness. He could have hid the truth from Pooja and lived double life. But he didn't. This shows the goodness inside him. He is repenting what he did!"
Kushi fumed in anger. "You should be ashamed of yourself, anuty. Pooja is your daughter. Have you ever thought how she will feel to live in same room with a man who had lied to her on her face?" Kushi questioned the visitor in anger. "I am here because I love my daughter. It's not only about her. She has a two year old daughter who needs father and more importantly better future. Have you thought about it?" The old lady retorted back.
"Pooja is educated and independent women. She can take care of her daughter. Trust me; your granddaughter would be better without an immoral father like your damad. Even I was brought up by single mother. So..." Kushi was interrupted the visitor. "That's what I fear! I don't want her to become like you!" The old lady commented.
"I don't want my granddaughter to grow up without knowing what is meant by BEING LOVED and what is meant by LOVING SOMEONE. I want her to have a family with whom she can share her joy, sorrow and everything; a family which will support her in every step of her life. After breaking up with damadji, Pooja is doing two jobs just to show her husband that she can be independent. In that process, she forgot that she has a daughter. I am scared that after my death, my granddaughter will be alone."
The old lady wiped her tears engulfed in her sorrows. She didn't notice the tears which had filled Kushi's eyes. "I still stand by your daughter's decision. If you are not happy with it, then try to convince your daughter but please spare me. I have other important works to do!" Kushi managed to keep her tone firm and opened the file fixing her gaze on it.
The visitor shook her head in disbelief and stood up. "I thought you will understand my point of view and value of a family. But it's my mistake to expect that from you. How will you understand the value of a family when you never had a family?!? I always wished that you must get settled with a good guy and have your own family. But you don't deserve it because even if you get a good family, you are never going to understand their value." The old lady left the cabin in distress.
Kushi watched the retreating back of the visitor silently and only when the visitor was completely out of her sight, she let her first tear to fall down.

**********************

"I love her jiju! It's not infatuation or attraction. I am sure about it. Kushi is the women with whom I want to spend my rest of the life." Arnav explained to the keen observing Shyam. "A thing is said to be love only when it is responded in the same way. In your case, I don't see any love from her side. Looking at her life, she seems to be very calculative and I strongly believe that even if she falls in love then there will be a motive behind it!" Shyam elucidated carefully choosing his words.
"If you think that Kushi is after my money then you are wrong jiju. Kushi is not after..." Arnav was cut off by Shyam.
"When did I say that Kushi is after your money?!?" The puzzled Shyam asked. "She is not after your money but she is after your power." Arnav's eyes widened as Shyam continued. "The power to do anything you want to do!" Arnav just stared at Shyam since nothing seemed to make sense. Shyam patted his shoulder. "You don't understand it, do you? I will explain! Let's start with what's his name..." Shyam walked around the table and picked the file. "Abhinav Khanna!"
"Abhinav was an industrialist who was the reason for his wife's death and Kushi's accident. Even after knowing the truth, Kushi couldn't produce single evidence against him. But it took only seven days for you to destroy him. That's called POWER, chotey!" Shyam described confidently.
"Are you telling me that she used me against that Abhinav?" Arnav gave a dry laugh. "Jiju, she didn't even ask me to do anything. I got angry when he tried to attack her in the hospital even after my warning. Kushi had no idea about what I was planning to do!" Arnav defended his love.
"An attack which never happened in real! There is no evidence that someone tried to kill her in the hospital!" Shyam added.
"How can you be so sure about it?" Arnav enquired.
"I spoke with Abhinav!" Shyam said as if it was the most common thing.
"But he is in jail..."
Shyam smirked. "That made my job easy. Don't forget that I am the Home minister of this state. Back to the discussion, Abhinav is a spineless coward. He was scared to death after you had warned him personally to stay away from Kushi. He swears that he neither called Kushi nor tried to harm her. If so why didn't Kushi file a complaint?" Shyam questioned Arnav.
"Abhinav must have lied!" Arnav said as a matter of fact.

"Kushi's phone bill statement of that month! There is no call from any unknown number on that day like you have told Aman." Shyam passed a paper to Arnav.
Actually yesterday I got a call from private number. It was Abhinav. He sounded angry and asked me whether I am trying to scare him by sending you to threaten him. He said that he is not scared of any Arnav Singh Raizada. He vowed me that he will ruin my life.
Arnav remained silent as Kushi's voice echoed in his ears. Shyam began to speak again. "Forget Abhinav. He is a history now. Coming to you, have you never wondered why a woman, who didn't let any of his male friends inside her house, had allowed you to enter it? Going by her past, she never does anything without a motive! Her intentions may be right but the way she achieves it is always wrong!"
Shyam picked another file. "Mr.Singh divorce case. He had an extra material affair but his wife couldn't provide single evidence. Do you know what Kushi did? She set up another woman to attract Mr.Singh and used some pictures of the woman in compromising position with Singh to prove that he is in illegitimate relationship." Shyam smirked.
"What are you trying to prove jiju?"
"That she is using you!"
"For what?"
"For Dhiya's case! After the kidnapping fiasco, I came to know that our cities don's son is involved in it. Even after handling that case, if she is still breathing then that is ONLY BECAUSE YOU ARE WITH HER. She knows that well. And she also knows that the minute you walk away from her, she is nothing but a dead meat."
Arnav shook his head. "You don't know anything about Kushi, jeejaji. I know her. She is very straight forward. If she wants my help, she will directly ask for it. Sometimes when I notice her character, she has lot of resemblances to you. Just meet her once, you will love her. But you have to give us a chance, jeejaji; If not for her, then at least for me. I love her." Arnav said in pleading tone.
Shyam studied Arnav closely. He caressed the bandage on the Arnav's forehead. "Does it hurt still?" He asked with natural concern. Arnav shook his head in negative. Shyam nodded. "I think you need to take rest now. Your health is more important than this matter. We can discuss this later." Arnav opened his mouth to protest but instead agreed to what Shyam had said and left.
Shyam heaved a sigh. Even after providing so much proof, Arnav is not ready even to listen to anything against her. His little brother is so much in love. He knew that if he had said strict NO' to Kushi, then Arnav would have not objected it. Shyam was sure that even now he comes first for Arnav before Kushi just like Arnav comes first for him before Anjali. Given a choice between Shyam and Kushi, Arnav would have chosen Shyam.
But that would have broken his little brother's heart. From the time Shyam knew Arnav, he had been doing things only for Arnav's happiness. Shyam can never hurt his Arnav. Now he had to find another way to handle this situation. May be Anjali can help him. He just hoped it won't be too late.

****************

Arnav gestured the bar tender to refill his glass. Normally, he is a social drinker. But most of the time he prefers to stay away from it for two reasons. First of all, Shyam is a non-drinker and he hates it when Arnav drinks. Another reason is Arnav feels like he loses his control when he is drunk. Being a man who wants everything to be under his control, he hates to wake up next morning without having an idea of what he did yesterday night. But today was exceptional. Today he wants to lose control because so many things are going on his head and he is tired of worrying about them.
He placed the glass on the counter with a thud. The bar tender filled the glass again. Arnav sipped the liquor as his mind replayed his conservation with Shyam again and again. Shyam has no good opinion about Kushi and Arnav knows it is tough to convince him. He could have argued more with Shyam but he was scared that Shyam might ask him to choose between Kushi and Shyam.
Arnav wanted to shout, It's my damn life and I know what to do!' He would have done it, if someone else was in his brother-in-laws place. But how can he say those words to a man who had sacrificed his own life for him?
So if the situation arises where he had to choose between Shyam and Kushi, he would definitely go for Shyam. But the thing is he is not sure whether he can live after that, after all Kushi had become reason for his life.

*******************

How it will feel to be loved by someone?' was the only question which was troubling her mind from the afternoon. She cancelled all her appointments and came home after the visit of Pooja's mother. As hours passed, she sat on her couch ideally looking at nothing in particular with her mind refusing to function. Whenever her stomach grumbled, she made a black coffee mechanically and drank it.

She took the first sip of the black coffee which she made twenty minutes before and flinched as the bitter liquid touched her taste buds. She had started to hate her coffees after tasting Arnav's coffee. How she wished Arnav was here to make her a black coffee! She sighed at her thoughts. Then she heard her door bell. Rolling her eyes to the wall clock, she noted that time was twenty minutes past eleven. She straightened her back suddenly becoming alert. She rolled her eyes back to the door as the door bell went again.
Okay, she will take back her wish. She doesn't want Arnav to be here now! She is in no mood to face him. She will drink her coffee without a complaint; just make him vanish. But this time her wish was not granted. The door bell continuously rang. Kushi stood up closing her ears with her open palms. "What's your problem? Why are you pressing it continuously?" Kushi screamed at Arnav's face after opening the door.
He gave his famous boyish grin and walked inside. Kushi gasped as Arnav walked past her. The air was filled with heavy alcohol's odour. "ARE YOU DRUNK, ARNAV?" Kushi yelled closing the door. Arnav turned and leaned to her making her lean back. When his breath fell on her face, he shook his head. "Nope! I am just acting like I have drunken!"
"What the?" Kushi swore while Arnav grinned at her. He sat on the couch and began to remove his shoes. "Arnav, what are you doing? And how dare you enter my house in this condition? Just leave now!" Kushi warned him standing before him. "I am upset Kushi!" Arnav retorted back. Kushi looked at him suspiciously. "In this situation you should ask me WHY?'"
While Arnav waited for Kushi to ask, she just glared at him. "Okay, even if you don't ask me I will tell you! Actually..." Arnav began enthusiastically but his face fell suddenly as if he remembered something. "jeejaji said no to you!" Kushi's reaction was neutral. She had never thought or worried about Shyam's approval.
"He says that you are using me. You wanted to destroy Abhinav and so you lied to me about attack in the hospital." Arnav said sadly. "And what did you say?" Kushi asked curiously knowing that what he said is true. Arnav stood up and held her hand. "I didn't trust him. That Abhinav must have lied to jiju! I know you, Kushi!" Arnav said confidently making Kushi to feel guilty for the first time for using Arnav.
She didn't want to continue any conversation now. So she gave the first excuse came to her mind. "Arnav, it's very late. You should go home. Also I have some important work to finish!" Kushi said making him angry by freeing her hand from his.
"Work! Work! Work! 24*7 you have important work to do, don't you?" Arnav chanted in an annoyed childlike tone. "You know what? You are so crazy! You think that whole world is functioning only because of YOU!" Arnav said spreading his hands in air, looking up and then turned his gaze to Kushi. "It's not like that madamji! We also do work! Infact everyone does it. So don't think that only you are responsible and others are irresponsible." Arnav finished in exaggerated voice.
Kushi pouted angrily hearing Arnav's accusations. He came closer to her and Kushi lowered head when his drunken breath fell on her face. "Stop working for five minutes and see! Nothing in the world would have changed. In reality, no one would have realised your absence because you are not important to them. So stop considering yourself as important!" He counselled and moved back.
Kushi folded her hands across her chest fuming in anger. "I know my value! And I also know that whole world is not functioning because of me! So you don't have to give me a lecture on that. But don't forget that I am a lawyer and have certain responsibilities to..." Arnav interrupted her. "I know! I know that you are a lawyer! You say it atleast fifty times a day!" Arnav dismissed her sloppily making Kushi to gasp in disbelief.
"Arnav don't park here; it's against law. Arnav, don't do this; it's wrong. Arnav, don't do that; it's not right!" Arnav mimicked Kushi and sat on the couch. "You speak like as if you are Amitab!" Arnav stated sarcastically. "Amitab Bachan?!?" Kushi raised her brow in confusion. "Nahi, Amitab who wrote it!" He gestured like writing in the air pointing towards her law book. "Dr.Ambedkar!" Kushi said gritting her teeth.
"Wahi! Wahi! Even he would have not flaunted so much like you!"Arnav said with a cynical grin. Kushi glared at him placing her hands on her hips. "Just get out of my house before I throw you out!" She warned him in angry tone. The grin on his face disappeared and he looked at Kushi with an offended frown. For a minute, Kushi wondered whether she had spoken too much.
Arnav crossed his legs and sat comfortably on the couch before smiling at her. "Throw me if you can!" He challenged her with amusement while Kushi heaved an annoyed sigh. After a bad day at office, now she has to handle drunken Arnav. "Jeez! Why me?" She mumbled to herself like a complaining child and sat next to Arnav.
"Arnav?" She started in polite voice. "What do you want?" Arnav thought for few seconds with serious expression. "Answers! Why are you like this...i mean...you are...so..." Arnav pouted thinking for right word and Kushi while watching his childish expressions wanted to pull his cheeks but refrained herself from doing it.
"So AJEEB! Yes, you are ajeeb Kushi?!?"
Kushi smiled slightly watching his baffled face. "Really? Okay, from now I will not do ajeeb things!" Kushi said knowing very well that this is the only way to silence him. He stretched his arm towards her suddenly making her to jerk back in fear. He gestured her to look at his open palm. "What?"
"Promise me on Geetha!"
Kushi cringed. "Now who is Geetha?"
"You don't know geetha? Don't you promise on her daily?" Arnav cried in shocked tone. "You mean Bhagavad Gita? Jeez, Arnav! How much have you drunk?" Kushi asked worriedly seeing his condition. He showed five fingers first and then ten. Kushi shrunk in her place speculating what's all in store for tonight.
"Arnav, I think you should sleep!" Kushi said in soft tone. "You think so?" Arnav asked like a kid and Kushi nodded. "Okay!" Arnav agreed and Kushi stood up deciding to make lemon juice for him. When she turned after picking lime, Arnav was standing so close to her. "s***! You scared me!" Kushi claimed moving back.
"What are you doing? Please don't make that horrible green tea you make!" Kushi gasped hearing his lame comment. "You are a cheater cock! You didn't promise on Geetha! First promise me that you will behave like your age girls do!" Arnav extended his hand while Kushi folded her arms against her chest.
"Like how? Leave my profession, marry someone like you, have number of kids and do household chores! This is what you want me to do, right? This is what whole world wants from a girl. But, sorry, you are expecting it from a wrong person!" Kushi said in sarcastic tone and moved toward the living area leaving confused Arnav behind the kitchen counter.
"Why should you leave your job?" Arnav sang the sentence like a rhyme. He walked to Kushi who looked confused. "I love your job! I love what you do! Do you know when I felt so proud for falling in love with you? It was when the goons said that they unable to control you and that's why they kidnapped me!" Arnav confessed honestly to shocked Kushi.
"I will tell you a secret! Come closer!" Arnav requested her and Kushi did so. "Do you know what i like the most about you? It's your attitude! I love the way you show your attitude like you are not answerable to anyone. But I didn't tell you that because I now that it will increase your attitude. So keep it as a secret!" Arnav whispered into Kushi's ears making her to blush with a smile.
"Then what do you want me to change?" Kushi asked him. Arnav thought for a minute before answering it. "I want you to enjoy life. I want you to smile often. I don't want you to be always sad like you have lost million rupees in a bet. Kushi, you have beautiful eyes! I will happily spend my life time looking into it. But I hate it when your eyes are clouded with gloominess! Your life is like black and white tv!"
"You will look eternal in colourful sarees but you will wear those stupid white sarees that too only for court! You don't even wear bangles!" Arnav grabbed her wrist and shoved it between their faces. "Do you know how beautiful your slim wrist will look when it is surrounded by dozens of thin bangles??? Do you know how pleasant it will sound when you shake it like this?" He said shaking her wrist and closed his eyes as if he could hear the sounds made by her imaginary bangles.
Kushi looked at him completely stunned. Arnav held her hands. "I love you, Kushi and I want you to be happy always! I will do anything for you!" Arnav said emotionally kissing their joined hands.
"You will do anything for me?" Kushi asked wanting to confirm it again. It feels good when someone says that they will do anything for you especially when you have no one in your life.
"I won't give my life for you because it belongs to someone else. But I will do every other thing for you!" Arnav said freeing her hands.
"Hmmm...Like what?" Kushi asked curiously to know what drunken Arnav will reply.
"I will love you unconditionally for what you are and will always accept you with your faults like...hmm...a mother does!" Kushi's eyes got widen with the mention of mother.
"Then?" Kushi asked giving him undivided attention now.
"Then...then...I will guide you in every step you take and will correct you when you commit a mistake like a father does!" Arnav held her hands.
"Then?" Kushi asked without blinking her eyes. She could hear her heart beating so fast for unknown reasons.
"Then I will protect you from the world and will face all evils before it reaches you like a brother does!" Arnav said tucking the loose strands behind her ears.
"Then?" Kushi asked closing her eyes and enjoying the feel of his fingers on her.
"I will be the one who always fights with you and also I will be the one who fights against the world for just YOU like a sister!" Arnav caressed her cheeks.
"Then?" Kushi's voice was lower than a whisper.
"When you are tired, I will make you lie on my lap and tell stories until you fall sleep like a grandmother does!" Arnav rested his forehead on her but never breaking their eye lock.
"Then?" Kushi asked as tears filled her eyes.
"I will be always proud of you irrespective of whatever you do just like a grandfather does!" He caressed her cheeks again with his thumb.
"then?"
"I will be always by your side like a true friend!" He dropped his hand down and entwined her fingers with him.
"then...?"
"I will always love and worship your body like a teenage lover!" He whispered into her ears making her to blush red.
"then?" She asked in between irregular breaths.
"I will seek your attention and love around the clock like a child!" Kushi smiled through her tears.
"Then?"
"I will share my life including all joys and sorrows with you by becoming your family like a husband does! And..." He said and pecked her forehead.
"And..." Kushi asked moving away from him and looking into his eyes.
"And I will always love you!" Arnav said cupping her cheeks as tears flow down her eyes.
"Do you really love me so much???" Kushi asked completely unable to believe it.
"You have no idea how much I love you!!!" Arnav said wiping her tears.
"Then give me an idea!!! Show me how much you love me!!!" Kushi said looking into his eyes. Arnav stared at her for few seconds before leaning forward and capturing her lips.
At the first touch of his lips on hers, she didn't find the usual passion which she felt during their previous encounters. As they deepened the kiss, she didn't feel the irresistible need to have him. There was no jolt of electricity inside her body. There were no fireworks around them. The earth didn't move beneath them nor did she feel like flying in the sky. But strange kind of warmth filled every cell of her body.
The feeling of being loved by someone!
They broke the kiss in the need of oxygen. Their foreheads were resting on each other. She looked at Arnav's darkened eyes. She had two options in front of her; to stop him and not to stop him. In an instant she made the decision. This might be wrong considering the fact yesterday Arnav was here in need for her. But she stopped him. And now he is not in his senses, she is using him.
But this might not be wrong considering the fact that a woman, who had never known what is meant by being loved in these twenty eight years, wants to be loved by someone atleast for a night!
She knows that she is using him. But she doesn't care. All her life she had been selfish for the sake of other's happiness. Tonight she wants to be selfish for her happiness. Anything can happen tomorrow morning. Arnav might even forget it. He might regret it. But, one thing is for sure; Kushi will never regret what's going to happen tonight. Because she can never regret for being loved by someone.
As Arnav leaned in to kiss her again, Kushi let him to kiss her allowing herself to be loved by Arnav.
