Chapter 3

It had been a couple of weeks since the day of the presentation. Raghu and I had sort of become friends. Well, not really "friends" but at least we didn't hate each other.

The next morning I head to my seat. I look around and see that Raghu wasn't anywhere around. Weird, I thought. He never misses a day of class. I felt weird not having Raghu beside me but then again it shouldn't make too much of a difference to me. I ignore the empty feeling inside of me and pay attention to what the professor is saying.

As I get into my car, I hear something behind me. I turn around and see nothing. Was I just imagining things? Probably. I turn around and am about to get in to my car when something hits my head and all I see is black.

I woke up to the sound of Raghu's voice. "Why did you bring her here? She's not important to me but she's still a human being," he says. What was he talking about? I look around and find myself in an unknown place. It was some type of garage. But what was I doing here and Raghu... what was he doing? I touch my head and feel a small bump at the back. I hope everything is ok.

"I just want that, if you give it to me, you are free to take her away," someone else says. "Listen, I don't have it right now. And besides, she has nothing to do with any of this, so let her go," Raghu says. What did he want from Raghu? And more importantly, what did I have to do with any of this?

I hear something loud and hear the crack of the door. I lie down and close my eyes, not wanting anyone to know that I had just heard that conversation. "Antara," I hear Raghu say. I think it was the first time he said my name. I could make out the concern in his voice but couldn't understand why it was there. He turns me over and puts my head in his lap and repeats my name, this time with even more concern. I didn't know how to react so I just kept my eyes closed, not showing any expression on my face.

"Please wake up, I'm sorry, this is all my fault," he says. I feel a drop of water hit my face. Wait, was he... was he crying? But why? I open my eyes slowly and see his face just above mine. If either of us moved even a little bit, we would- no, Antara, that's not important. What's important is that you're in some random place and you were knocked out a while ago. Concentrate on that.

"What happened?" I say softly, not trusting me voice to say anymore than that. "You're awake? Come on, we have to get out of here," he says and we get up. "But-" "No time for questions, we have to get out of here fast," he says, taking my hand and leading me out of the room. As we step out, I see a body lying on the floor. Who was it? Had Raghu done something? Just as I am about to ask him, he pulls me into a corner and covers my mouth with his hand. He looks out and someone walks by. He moves closer to me, shielding me with his body. I look up at him, realizing our proximity. I had never thought that I would be this close to him. He turns to look at me and meets my eyes. He slowly takes his hand off of my mouth but doesn't look away.

A loud noise breaks our eye lock. I turn to look out and see another man sitting next to the body of the man we had just passed. I was so confused. What was happening? Raghu takes my hand and leads me out of the hall and we run out of the building. "Where are we going?" I ask. We were in some weird area. We weren't even in Toronto anymore and it was almost dark. "Don't worry about that, first we have to get out of here," he says. "But what do these people want?" I ask. "Shh," he says turning to face me. "You ask way too many questions. Right now my priority is to get out of here, not to answer your stupid questions." "Fine, I don't want to be around you anyways, the faster we get away from here, the better," I say. "Now come and please be quiet. I have no interest in hearing your nonstop chatter." This was the guy who had just been so concerned about me? Really? His behavior made me wonder if he even had feelings. Khadoos, I think to myself.

We had been walking for two hours and I was tired now. I stopped walking and sat down on the ground. "I'm tired," I say. "Well we have to get out of here, its not safe to be out here in Barrie in the dark," he replies. "Wait, how the hell did we get from Toronto to Barrie?" I ask, standing up. "That shouldn't matter. I told you, we have to get out. Now come on," he says and starts walking again. Seeing no other choice, I walk behind him.

"Finally," I say as I see a road. "What now?" "Well we need a ride but there's no one here," he says. "Thank you Captain Obvious. Of course people are always driving around a forest at 12:30 in the morning," I say, my words loaded with sarcasm. "Would you be quiet? Let me figure something out," he says. I look to the other side and see a car. I jump in the middle of the road, attempting to stop the car and it did. I look at Raghu and signals me to back off. He walks to the driver's side and talks to the driver.

"He said that he can drop us off at a hotel nearby because he's still staying in the area. We can get a cab from there tomorrow morning and head back to Toronto," he says. This is like one of those funny Bollywood type situations, I think to myself. I just hope that there is one more room. I do not want to have to share a room with khadoos. "Fine," I say and get into the car. Raghu gets in beside me and we head off to the hotel.

We thank the person and walk into the hotel reception. It was a pretty nice hotel. "Raghu, how are we going to pay for this?" I ask as we walk to the reception. "Relax, I've got it covered," he says. "Hi, we would like two rooms." The receptionist nods and looks through the computer for vacant rooms. "You're in luck sir, we have exactly two rooms left," she says handing him the keys. I didn't realize that I had been holding my breath until that second. Thank God, I think. I don't have to share a room with this khadoos.

"Here you go," he says, handing me the key to my room. "You should get some rest. Today's been quite an eventful day." I nod and walk towards the stairs and head to my room. Raghu follows behind me and I realize that his room is next to mine. "I'm here if anything happens," he says. I nod and walk into my room, not wanting to elaborate on that. I lie down on the bed, letting the tiredness overtake me and I fall asleep.
