Shah Jahan was confined for 8 years in his prison at agra fort is well known to all. But the atrocities of aurganzeb did not end there. Aurangzeb hated Shah Jahan because he loved Dara Sikoh his elder brother and would always listen to him in matters of the state. Aurangzeb never forgot that after Shah Jahan's capture.
Aurangzeb sent Dara Sikoh's head in a plate at lunch time to Shah Jahan is a well known incident. But what many are not aware are the other atrocities he committed on Shah Jahan in his confinment. Some of them are listed below.
Since Shah Jahan was still healthy after years of confinment Aurangzeb told his personal adviser an eunuch Itibar Khan to give slow poison to Shah Jahan. Itibar would mix the slow poison in Shah Jahan's food a little everyday and this detoriated his health in last 2 years of life. He had severe stomach pain and internal bleeding and fell unwell frequently and became so weak that he became confined to the bed.
Itibar and Aurangzeb did not stop at that. Itibar brought a poisonoous oil and told the royal masseur to massage it on Shah Jahan's body. This caused him severe itching and after a few times of applying it his skin blackened and he had blisters all over his body.
Many more atrocities were committed in the closed confines of agra fort on Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan was tortured so much at his old age that he wished to die soon rather than take so much pain and misbehaviours at hand of the servants who once served him while he was emperor at the biddings of Aurangzeb.
Atlast on 22nd Jan 1666 he breathed his last at age of 76. His funeral was even more secluded. He was taken out from the rear gate of Agra fort by four palaquin bearers. None of his family be his wives or daughter were allowed to accompany him on his final journey. His wives and daughter pleaded with the gaurds to not take his body out at night for funeral as usually funerals took place in day but they did not agree. No son, grandson, relative or nobel accompanied the body of the emperor who ruled 30 years. He was given a funeral of traitors without any ceremony and without any family, friends accompanying him on last journey or proper funeral rites and buried next to Mumtaz Mahal his beloved wife.
Thus ended the tragic life of a powerful and richest emperor on earth of his time who had been raised lovingly and was a favourite of his grandfather Akbar and father Jehangir.

yes he killed his 3 brothers and countless cousins over 50 of them but that does not mean his son will punish him. A son(or child) should have gratitude because if not for parents who protect and take care of you and make you capable to stand in this world child would be a nobody. Who was aurangzeb a nobody if he was not born to shah jahan a mughal emperor? He did not become emperor based on his ability like an babar/akbar/humayun who created an empire out of their hard work. All other emperors got it without much hard work because they were born in that family.

The story about the head being served as lunch was about Bahadur Shah Zafar, not Shah Jahan.

Also, it was known that he killed one of his wives' then husband, then married her. The man's reign was filled with atrocities, cruelty, injustice, and debauchery - if any of the treatment toward the end of his life is true as listed, then while you are correct that this conduct is unbecoming a son, it may very well be God's answers to Shah Jahan's conduct.

Also - it is rare for a child to hate his own father in such a way - says a lot about his upbringing. We don't know what happened, why, what was done. But from little I know, Shah Jahan was neither a loyal, not a loving father.

The loving family man sort of ended after Humayun. Babar and Humayun were known to be loving and caring toward their families.

Of course - I've read many many versions of history so God only knows what's true.

But we can learn a lesson from Shah Jahan's life - don't be brutal, cruel, unjust, etc. It comes back - life comes full circle.

I do not know this Bahadur Shah Zafar, what is that story?
I have read in 2-3 books that Dara Sikoh's head was decapitated from his body and sent to Sahh Jahan in agra. His headless body was displayed in Khooni Drawaza for 2-3 days and finally buried in an unmarked grave in Humayun Tonmb Delhi. So are you confirming that Dara Sikoh's head was not decapitated. But a marble near the red fort gates tells this same event.
Also - it is rare for a child to hate his own father in such a way - says a lot about his upbringing.
Even in 21st century parents have favourite children, neglect kids etc that does not mean everyone go around taking revenge and killing siblings and parents after hey become big?
Then half this world shall not exist if we consider Aurangzeb criteria for killing his family members.
And Aurangzeb was notorious from childhood at age 13 he put poison in food of elder bro Dara Sikoh and Dara almost died if not for Sikh Guru Hari Das saving him. That incident changed Dara life and he started respecting and visiting and believing in all religions and Gods. Did not Dara and Shah Jahan pardon him for such big offence? If they were also revengeful like Aurangzeb they could have punished him long back.
Regarding Shah Jahan killing another man and marrying wife Akbar and Jehangir both did similar things. But yes Babar and Humayun were very good family men compared to others.
What i do not like about Shah Jahan is -
he killed his brothers and cousins all of Jehangir's, Murad., Daniyals, Hakim Mizra's sons and grandsons and great grandsons and then came on throne. That is major reason why jehanara and roshanara did not marry because they did not have any suitors in their family.
The second thing i did not like about him was his womanizing ways after Mumtaz death. What sort of love is that? After a few years of mouring you totally forget wife and kids and become from a loyal husband to a casanova?
The third thing was he reversed his father and grandfather's policies of equal treatment for all religions and refused to give permission to build temples or repair them, got back jiyaza etc. He also brought back culture of demolotion of temples which had completely stopped in Jehangir region. He also stopped issuing grants to hindu temples(like Kashi, Keshav Rai, Mathura temple etc) like previous administrators.
The fouth thing you pointed out was the cruelty and atrocities on citizens by imposing excessive tax, ruthless collection tactics, discrimination towards non muslim citizens etc they all started in shah jahan region and maximized by aurangzeb.
I think his upbringing by Ruqaiah in Akbar's household has a major contribution towards his charcater. If he was brought up by his mom Jodha, grandmom Mariam-uz-zamani in Jehangir household he may have been better and more liberal by nature as they would have brought up him up with exposure to Rajputh culture and values.

What I meant when I said that it is rare for a child to have such hatred, or for an adult, is that he 'Aurangzeb' must have gone through quite a childhood to breed such hate. I'm not by any stretch of the imagination condoning Aurangzeb's actions, if they're true. I'm just saying, imagine the childhood. And Shah Jahan is responsible for that childhood. So what went around came around.

And all the things you listed Shah Jahan did - if true, they're even more reasons why God may have made his end so painful.

Again - it was monstrous of Aurangzeb to do what what did. Shah Jahan was no saint in his time. He killed, ravaged, and then some. Brutal to the core. So is it any wonder another monster was bred in the same household?

what's surprising is these were the descendants of Babar and Humayun ...
