CASTE SYSTEM OF VEDIC INDIA

HI

i am hereby concising the caste system given in following books - manu smriti, gautama smriti (nyaya sutra), boudhayana, vashistha smriti, vishnu smriti (dharmashastra) and arthashatra(kautilya) :

the * represents that the offspring has acquired the qualities of father (Pitrasadrisa) , but not his caste (Pitrasajati) . They acquire an interemdiary caste - lower than that of father but higher than that of mother. Though Manu doesnt give any other name, hence i have represented with a star.

Caste of offsprings from Anuloma (acceptable ) marriage:

1. Brahmana (Male) with the following Females:

Brahmana :
i) Brahmana son

Kshatriya :

i) Brahmana* (Manu , Boudhayana)
ii) Ambashtha (Vashistha , Gautama)
iii) Kshatriya (Vishnu)
iv) Murdhavasikta (Arthashastra)

(note 1: Vishnu smriti/ Dharmashastras always gives the son his mother's caste considering her to be giver of mentality and strength while in womb . Dharmashastras is considered the black -and -white book with no middle path)

Vaishya :

i) Ambashtha (Manu , Boudhayana)
ii) Daushyanta (Gautama)
iii) Vaishya (Vishnu)
iv) Bhrijjukantaka (Arthashastra)

(note 2: Vashistha smriti doesnt mention any marriage to two degree lower castes hence no name to offspings of brahmana-vaishya and kshatriya- sudra)

Sudra :

i) Nishada (Manu ,Boudhayana , Gautama)
ii) Parasava (Manu , Boudhayana, Arthashastra)
iii) Sudra (Vishnu)

2. Kshatriya (Male) with the following Females:

Kshatriya:
i) Kshatriya son

Vaishya :

i) Kshatriya* (Manu , Boudhayana)
ii) Ugra (Vashistha, Gautama)
iii) Mahisya (Arthashastra)
iv) Vaishya (Vishnu)


Sudra :

i) Ugra ( Manu, Baudhayana)
ii) Parasava (Gautama)
iii) Sudra (Vishnu)
iv) Yavana (Arthasastra)

3. Vaishya (Male) with the following Females:

Vaishya ;
i) Vaishya son

Sudra :

i) Vaishya* (Manu)
ii) Nishada (Vashistha)
iii) Rathakara (Boudhayana)
iv) Karana (Arthasastra)
v) Sudra (Vishnu)

4. Sudra (male) with Sudra (Female) :

i) Sudra son


Caste of offsprings from Pratiloma (unacceptable ) marriage:

1. Sudra (Male) with the following Females:

Brahmana:

i) Chandala son

Kshatriya :

i) Kshatta (Manu , Boudhayana , Gautama)
ii) Vaina (Vashistha)
iii) Magadha (Vishnu)
iv) Pulkasa (Arthashastra)

Vaishya :

i) Ayogava (Manu, Vishnu, Gautama)
ii) Antyavasayin (Vashistha)
iii) Magadha (Boudhayana)
iv) Vaidehaka (Arthashatra)


2. Vaishya (Male) with the following Females:


Brahmana :

i) Vaideha (Manu, Boudhayana , Gautama, Vishnu)
ii) Ramaka (Vashistha)
iii) Magadha (Arthashatra)

Kshatriya

i) Magadha (Manu , Gautama)
ii) Pulkasa (Vashistha , Vishnu)
iii) Ayogava (Boudhayana)
iv) Magadha (Gautama)
v) Dhivara (Arthashatra)


3. Kshatriya (Male) with Brahmana (Female) :

i) Suta son


Caste of offsprings from Mixed castes and Main castes

Male - Female = Offspring

Brahmana - Ugra = Avrita (Manu)

Brahmana - Ambashtha = Abhira (Manu)

Brahmana - Ayogava = Dhigvana (Manu)

Nishada - Sudra = Pukkasa (Manu)

Nishada - Vaishya = Pukkasa (Boudhayana)

Sudra - Nishada = Kukkutaka (Manu)

Vaishya - Nishada = Kukkutaka (Boudhayana)

Pukkasa - Nishada = Kukkutasa ( Boudhayana)

Ambashtha - Brahmana = Svapaka (Boudhayana)

Ugra - Kshatriya = Vaina (Boudhayana)


Caste of offsprings within Mixed castes :

Male - Female = Offspring

Vaidehaka - Ayogava = Maitreyaka (Manu)

Nishada - Vaidehaka = Karavara / Ahindika (Manu)

Chandala - Vaidehaka = Pandusopaka (Manu)

Kshatta - Ugra = Svapaka (Manu)

Nishada - Ayogava = Margava, Dasa, Kaivarta (Manu)

Chandala - Pukkasa = Sopaka (Manu)

Chandala - Nishada = Antyavasayin (Manu)

Vaidehaka - Ambashtha = Vena (Manu) , Vaina (Boudhayana)

Ugra - Kshatta = Svapaka (Boudhayana)
