CHAPTER 19

Maan paced the hallway outside Dev's room restlessly, like a caged lion. Dadi was sitting on a padded chair, while Miri had been sent to the kitchen with a servant to eat something.

"Baith jaiye Maan. Sab thik hoga." She indicated to the chair across her.

(Sit down Maan, everything will be fine.)

He continued pacing for a minute, then whirled around and slumped in the chair.

"Kaise Dadi, kasie thik hoga?"

(How Dadi, how will it be fine)

"Geet hai na? Woh samjhayegi Dev ko."

(Geet's there right? She'll make Dev understand?)

"Why dadi? Why can she help him when we, his family can't? I know she is his physiotherapist, but this is way beyond physical therapy. Then why do you have so much confidence in her?"

"Boliye dadi, why her out of all the people? I have taken Dev to the best consultants. I am spending money like water, funding stem cell research in the hope that they will someday be able to find a cure for him."

"Par phir bhi aap ko yakin hai ki uss ke jaisi ek sadharan ladki Dev ki madat kar sakti hai?"

(Inspite of all that, you are convinced that a mere girl like her can help Dev.)

"Panch saal Maan...paanch saal, aur hume aaj pata chala hai ki Dev ke mann mein kya hai. Aap ko kya lagta hai, yeh kiski wajah se hua hai?"

(5 years Maan...5 years and today for the first time we have understood what is in Dev's heart. What do you think Maan? To whom does the credit go?)

"Paheliya mat bujhaiye Dadi."

(Don't talk in riddles Dadi.)

"What did Dev mean when he said she can't sit in the chair again? He specifically used the word again'. What lies has she fed you?"

Maan ran frustrated hands through his hair, got off the chair and started pacing again.

"But why is she lying? Or is she even lying? When I fell against her, I... I felt her leg. It was not right. There was... there was something there. It was not normal bones and muscles. I am not sure. I only felt it for a minute."

"What's wrong with Geet, Dadi?"

Geet. He may have not realized it but he had called her Geet. She was not Miss. Geet Handa anymore. Savitri Devi smiled at the thought.

She looked at him pacing up and down trying to reason it out in his mind. She could see him trying to hold on to his stubborn, but completely wrong opinion about Geet. But, in face of the facts being presented to him, right before his eyes, he was now unsure about who and what she was. It was a start and she was happy with it. She wished she could discuss Geet's condition with him and clear his doubts once and for all. But Geet had shared her heartbreaks and triumphs with her because she had trusted this Dadi. It was not her place to share that information, given to her in confidence, with her grandson. He would have to find his own answers. It would mean a lot more when he discovered for himself, what a wonderful person she was. She had no doubt that he would eventually find his own answers.

She finally decided to give him a reply. It might not satisfy him, but that was all she was saying for now.

"Humey jitna Geet ke bare mein janna hai who sab hum jaan chuke hai. Humey Geet pe bharose hi nahi, pura yakeen bhi hai. Humare parivar ka bhavishya Geet hi hai?"

(I know all that I need to know about Geet. I not only trust her but have full confidence in her. Geet is the future of our family.)

"What do you mean Dadi?" Maan's eyes narrowed intently over her. His heart had skipped a beat when she'd said the last sentence. What the hell? Why should his heart skip a beat? She was not ever going to be a part of his future. Of that he was sure.

Oops!! Maybe she'd said a little bit too much in her overenthusiasm, Savitri Devi realized.

"What do you think I mean, Maan? I am talking about Dev, of course. Whatever else could I mean?"

"Mujhe laga...never mind Dadi. Woh sab chodiye? You were telling me about Geet?

"Was I?"

"Dadi!!" He ground his teeth in frustration. She was being stubbornly elusive.

Before he could question her further, Dadi's phone beeped.

There was a text from Geet.

Aap log ab andar aa sakte hain Dadi.

(You can come in now, Dadi.)

She sighed heavily and swayed slightly as she got off the chair.

"Dadi?" Maan called out anxiously as he supported her.

"I'm fine Maan. Just worried about what we'll find inside."

" Humara baccha, pata nahi, kya soch raha hoga?"

(God knows what our baby must be thinking)

Maan just squeezed her to him slightly and supported her to Dev's room.

She straightened and let go off him, just before entering Dev's room. This was no time to show her own weakness. She had to be strong for her grandchild.

He was sitting with his hand resting lightly on Geet's left thigh. Their heads were bent together and Dev seemed to be measuring something with his hand.

Maan's eyes narrowed on Dev's hand. He looked over at his Dadi. She too had noticed Dev's concentration on Geet's leg. It was the same leg he'd felt under his hand.

So he'd been right. There really was something wrong with her leg. He'd grill Dev later for answers, or he could ask the woman herself.

They both snapped to attention and Dev let go off Geet's leg and she too straightened up quickly. Maan had a feeling he wasn't going to get any answers from his little brother about her, either.

He decided now was not the time. What he desperately needed right now was some kind of answer to Dev's dilemma. His brother looked a lot calmer.

"Dev." Dadi called out to him in a soft voice.

"Hey Dadi. Hi bhai. I think I'd like to walk someday." He made that tentative announcement to all.

"Di thinks that I can do it, if I give it my best effort. She is going to chart out a plan for me."

Dadi walked over to Dev and hugged him. She was too choked for words.

Man could see that his brother was putting an effort to be upbeat. He was trying really hard to suppress his doubts, but 5 years of guilt and grief could not be forgotten so easily in a day. Still, for the first time he'd seen real hope in his brother's eyes and for that we was thankful.

Geet looked around for Miri and didn't see her.

"Dadi, Miri kaha hain?"

(Dadi, where is Miri?)

"Humne usse niche kitchen mein kuch khane ko bhej diya hai bete. Aap bhi kuch kha lo."

(I have sent her downstairs with a servant to eat something. Why don't you grab a bite too?)

"Nahi Dadi. Aaj nahi. Aaj mujhe ghar jaldi jana hai Pari rah dekh rahi hogi."

(No Dadi. Not today. I want to get home early today. Pari must be waiting for me.)

Dadi walked over to Geet and kissed her forehead.

"Thank you bete. We were blessed from the day you came into our lives. Thank you."

Geet gave her a tight squeeze and muttered in a low voice that reached only Dadi's ears.

"Shh Dadi. I am so happy today. Every day I have cursed my leg and it's shortcomings, but today for the first time I was glad for this leg.

"Woh chalega Dadi, zaroor chalega."

(He will walk Dadi, he will definitely walk.)

Maan bent down and hugged his brother fiercely.

Tum chaloge Dev. Tum zaroor chaloge.

Geet was startled to hear her words echoed by Maan.

Chalo kisi baat pe toh agree kar gaye hum dono. Agey bhi jake, I hope he cooperates with me.

(At least we agreed on something together. I hope he cooperates with me in the future too.)

"Dadi ab main chalti hoon. Baki ki baatein kal karenge."

(Dadi I am leaving now. We'll discuss the rest of the details tomorrow.)

"Dev, your chair?" She called out to him tentatively.

Dev looked up at her and shook his head reluctantly

"Di please. Bhai, kuch karo na. Main nahi chahta ki Geet di iss kursi mein baithe"

(Bhai, do something, please. I don't want Geet di to sit in this chair.)

"Phir se?"

(Again?)

Maan asked the question while looking intensely at Geet, who looked up at him with startled eyes.

Oh yes, Geet, I am going to get to the bottom of this right now.

Dev drew back his attention with his question.

"I don't know what you mean Bhai?

"A few moments ago you said that Gee... I mean Miss Handa cannot sit in this chair again. You used the word again' Dev. I want to know what you meant."

"Nahi bhai, galti se kaha hoga. Aise kuch nahi hain. Chodo na."

(No bhai I must have said it mistakenly. There is nothing like that. Just leave it.)

"Is he right Miss Handa?"

He had not taken his eyes off her yet.

"I... Aise kuch nahi hain Mr Khurana."

(There is nothing of the sort Mr. Khurana.)

"I have already heard that one from Dev, Miss Handa. Now you tell me, how it really is?"

There was absolutely no way she was going to share the full truth with him. He would have her out of this house before she could blink, if she told him the truth. Also, she did not want pity from this man. Worse yet, he might not even believe her and think it was yet another one of her supposed tricks to garner sympathy from them, for her own selfish reasons. Now that she knew she could help Dev, there was absolutely no way she was walking out meekly. So, she was going to give him the partial truth.

"Actually Mr. Khurana you are right. I had a small accident some time ago and I had to temporarily use the wheel chair to get around. It was no big deal. I was fine soon enough. Also a while ago you..you I mean... "

She took a deep breath and forged ahead.

"You...You felt something on my th..thigh didn't you? It is just a thigh band with metal straps that I use for muscular pain, left over from the accident"

And he was a new born baby, if he believed that crap she had just handed him.

He knew everything that there was to know about muscular pain and thigh bands. He had sustained enough muscular injures while practicing martial arts and used any number and types of bands. She was clearly lying. He knew however, that pushing her right now was not a good idea. Emotions in the room were running high enough already and he did not want to add any more fuel to it. So he decided to let it be and focus on the problem at hand. He did not let himself think too much about his actions. He simply walked over to her chair and picked her up in his arms.

"Mr. Khurana!!" Geet gasped and her whole body stiffened rigidly as she tried to shrink within herself in an attempt to get away from his arms.

"Maan"

"Bhai"

Dev and Dadi exclaimed simultaneously.

"What?" He glared at her.

"You want to get home as soon as possible and he doesn't want you to sit in his wheel chair" he said inclining his head towards Dev.

"Can you think of a better idea, Miss Handa?"

He raised one eyebrow enquiringly, as he looked down at her.

"But how can I...I mean... Dadi kuch boliye na?"

Dadi who had been shocked at her grandson's action, suddenly looked down to hide a wicked grin that was trying to take over her face, in spite of her best efforts to maintain a straight facade. She wanted to clap gleefully at this sudden turn of events, but instead, she brought her elation under control and looked at Geet seriously.

"Please bete. Let him take you. The wheel chair is the only other option and Dev doesn't want you to sit in it.

"Maan jaiye na uske khatir. Kyu Dev, sahi kaha na maine."

("Please agree for Dev's sake. Am I right Dev.")

There was no reply from Dev so she glanced down at him, only to see him staring in open mouthed fascination at Geet in his brother's arms. He looked as if he had found the answer to an unsolvable question that had been plaguing humanity, since the beginning of time. He looked enlightened.

"Bha...eee... Ouch Dadi!! Why'd you pinch me?"

She knew if he said the wrong thing his brother would dump Geet right there like a sack of hot potatoes.

"Maine? Kab? Sorry Dev galti se ho gaya hoga."

(Me? When? Sorry Dev. Must have been a mistake)

She shook her head subtly to warn him. His eyes widened and he gave her a sly wink.

"Di what's the big deal? Bhai has given me a lift in his arms any number of times. He's used to it. Just think of him as your elder brother."

"He's not my brother."

"She's damn well not my sister."

They both yelled simultaneously. Dadi hastily covered a snort with a cough.

"Put me down Mr. Khurana, Right now." She glared at him.

"Make me." He mocked her and started walking towards the door rapidly.

"Dadiii!! Deeev!!" She wailed out.

"Di, relax and enjoy the ride. Dev laughed at her and gave her a thumbs up sign. Then just as suddenly his laughter died.

"Please Di, not the chair." he implored.

She sighed and nodded at him.

Just as she was passing his chair he pulled at her dangling hand.

"Thanks Di."

The sudden jerk on her hand made her feel off balance and she grabbed Maan tightly around his neck.

She slowly looked up at him, as he gazed down at her.

And Maan stopped in his tracks.

They were both transported back to the night of the charity ball, when their eyes had first met and everything around them had faded. It was the same sensation, only this time it was intensified due to their physical proximity. Their eyes clung to each other and refused to look away.

Dev and Dadi who had been looking on in fascination, at the oblivious pair, standing right there in the doorway, looked at each other and grinned.

It was then that Dadi realized that the attraction was on both the sides. She had been unsure of Geet's feelings, but looking at the two of them now, all her doubts were cleared.

Dadi cleared her throat loudly and they both snapped back to the present.

"I would like to talk to Dev for some time, also I am feeling very tired. I hope you don't mind if I don't accompany you downstairs Geet."

"Par Dadi..."

"Please bete."

She sighed once again and agreed.

As he started walking on, Maan was unaware of anything but the slight weight of the woman in his arms and the soft pressure of her body against his. His ears and face felt hot and he tried to distract himself by focusing on his breath. It was then that he realized that his breathing was labored and his heart was pounding hard. He was in extremely good physical condition and she barely weighed anything. He easily bench pressed more then she weighed, for a lot longer without even a hitch in his breath.

Maan get a grip on yourself. This is no different from holding Dev, while transporting him from one place to another.

But Dev had never felt so soft in his arms, nor had he smelt so intoxicating. This attraction he felt for her refused to be denied while he held her so closely. He gazed down at her from the corner of his eye and saw a pulse rapidly pounding in her throat. Was she just nervous to be in such close proximity to a man, any man, or was it because he was holding her. Did she feel it too, this undeniable thread that linked them together? He looked away and his were eyes drawn back to her involuntarily. He was seeing her at such close quarters for the first time. More than beauty, her face held a soft sweetness and a gentleness that made him question himself, time and again. His lips tightened as he saw the slight puffiness of her eyes and the pink that tinged the lids. His eyes then dropped to her bandaged feet. Today, he'd made her shed blood and tears, both. He clamped his mind shut on that thought. He was going to thoroughly examine his behavior later; for now he was already dealing with the conflict raging between his heart and his mind; an emotional heart willing, but a reasoning mind denying accepting his attraction towards Geet. He carried her down the stairs, instead of going towards the lift that had been installed for Dev's convenience. Why was he doing this, he refused to ask himself that question. He just wanted to live in the moment for now and not think about anything else. Just for another crazy moment he wanted to think that he was on a tread mill with her in his arms, walking on and on with no destination. His lip quirked at that silly thought.

Geet was trying her best to ignore the heat seeping through her body, wherever it came in touch with his. She had become a mass of tingling nerve ends. She felt enclosed in the strength of his arms, as he effortlessly carried her.

Geet how many times have you been carried by Baba and Brij bhaiyya, when you couldn't walk. This is the same Geet. Just think of him as a means of transportation. Think of him as..as... bebo.' But he felt nothing like her father, her brother or her bike.

She turned her head slightly towards him and her eyes focused on the small cut that was visible on his cheek, where he had probably cut himself while shaving. He had seemed like such an arrogant and ruthless person until now. A hard unsympathetic man, immune to the hurts and pains of others around him; but cut him and he too bled, she realized. Her heart had squeezed painfully when she had seen the helpless look in his eyes while he struggled to come to terms with the enormity of Dev's suffering and guilt. She remembered his heartfelt reaction to Miri's touch and her heart gave another painful tug.

Dev had shared the details of their parent's accident and how Maan had been a rock solid presence in his and Dadi's life. It had been a very chaotic time in their lives, with Dadi losing her will to live overnight and he himself in that condition. As she looked at him now, she wondered who had soothed his hurts while he'd been taking care of theirs. He too had lost his parent's after all. In whose arms had he shed his pain and tears? She was slowly coming to understand this man. Even though he hated her and found her presence unwelcome in his house, he had taken on the responsibility of personally delivering her home. He was a man who'd built a lot of layers around himself, but she was slowly realizing that it was a barrier he'd built to protect his softer inner core. Her hand involuntarily moved gently against his nape in a soothing gesture and his breath hitched and he stopped in his tracks.

She realized her mistake and hastily looked away and pretended she was unaware of her own action.

What had that been!! He wondered. It had been very fleeting, but the softest caress he'd ever felt and just when he'd regained a small measure of control over his run away heart. That stupid thing restarted it's pounding effort with a renewed vigor. But when he looked down at her, she seemed unaware of her action. Had it just been his imagination then?

Just as he reached the last step, he saw a servant coming towards them with Miri.

The little girl took one look at her mother in Maan's arms, her eyes went wide as saucers and she clapped her palms over her mouth.

"Miri..." Geet had just begun when Maan interrupted her.

"Tumhari Mamma ke pair mein glass lag gaya na, issi liye maine unhe uthaya hain. Woh bilkul thik hain."

(Your mamma had stepped on glass right, that's why picked her up. She is perfectly fine)

Miri looked from her mamma to the man who held her and nodded solemnly.

"Miri ko bahar gadi tak leke chalo?" he instructed the person with Miri.

(Bring Miri to the car outside)

"Ji Sir."

Geet smiled at her gratefully and motioned Miri to go with her.

"Please Rose, Thank you."

"Chinta mat karo Geet dear, main leke aata hoon usse. Chalo Miri."

(Don't worry Geet dear, I'll bring her. Let's go Miri.)

"Aata hoon nahi Rose, aathi hoon." Geet laughed.

(Note:This one is impossible to translate in English. Rose used the masculine gender for addressing Miri and Geet is correcting her)

Rose took Miri's hand in hers and started walking towards the door.

Maan looked down at the beautiful laughing face just a few inches from his and his gut clenched in reaction.

He was going to go crazy from riding this emotional rollercoaster, for sure.

He had not even known the lady's name was Rose and this woman seemed to be on a first name basis with her.

She is taking over everything that is mine, including my staff.

He shook his head at the irrational thought and strode out of the house.

The little monkey ahead kept turning back, looked at them and giggled. She kept it up all the way to the car. He had no idea what was going on in that tiny devilish mind of hers, but he was grateful for the distraction.

They finally made it to the car and he heaved a silent sigh of relief.

Rose was holding the back door open for them and Miri had already settled herself in the seat. Maan carefully placed Geet on the adjacent seat, but his hands clenched involuntarily around her one last time before he let go finally.

"Wear your seat belt." He advised her and walked to the other side of the car. He reached in and across Miri and plugged her seat belt in.

Just as he was about to pull out, a small hand clutched at his palm. He looked down at her and quirked an eyebrow inquiringly.

She held on to his hand and motioned him towards her with her other hand.

The moment he bent towards her, she smacked a kiss on his cheek.

"Thank you Sheru, mamma ko godi mein uthane ke liye. Next time meri bari."

(Thanks sheru, for lifting mamma in your arms, next time it's my turn.)

She paused for a moment and added whilst rubbing her lips.

"Aur tumahri dadhi chubti hai."

(And your beard prickles.)

Maan looked down at her in amazement, for a moment and then a loud bark of laughter left his throat.

The little imp had completely captured him tonight. He tousled her hair and whispered to her,

"Sher se dar to nahi lagega?"

(You won't be scared of the tiger right?)

She shook her head vehemently.

"Na. Bilkul bhi nahi."

(Nope. Absolutely not.)

"Then it's a promise." He said, gave her a hi-fi and stepped back.

Geet watched the whole interaction in fascination. Tonight it seemed like not only she, but her daughter too had seen him in a new light. Then her gaze fell on Maan who was walking towards the front of the car and she saw him rubbing his arms, his chest and clenching his fists.

Her lips tightened in irritation.

Who the hell had asked him to lift her? If she was so heavy, he should have dumped her on the ground and she would have managed somehow.

It was imprinted on him, the feel of her. He felt a burning sensation against his chest and his arms, where he'd carried her. No matter how hard he tried it would not go away. He repeatedly squeezed his palms, rubbed his arms and chest to get rid of that sensation. As he got into the driver's seat and looked at her through the rear view mirror, he knew he was in deep trouble.

Narrative:

The last paragraph where Maan feels Geet even after he's let go off her is a modification of a favorite scene of mine from the movie, "Pride and Prejudice"😳

Mr. Darcy clenches his palm after holding Elizabeth's bare hand for the first time. I absolutely love that scene and wondered how a man would feel if the woman he was attracted to was in his arms.😳

When I asked my husband, his reply was that the man would wish that he was on a treadmill, hoolding her, walking, enjoying it thoroughly, but going nowhere.🤣

So I added that to Maan's though process too.😆

First of all, Happy Valentines Day! 🤗

Was this chapter a V'day treat for us? It was sure worth it. 😳

There was a lot in this chapter which marked for new beginnings. It felt like the thick clouds of gloom and despair had just been lifted to give fresh new colours to everything; whether it was Dev and his tentative hope of standing on his feet once again, or the equation of Maan with Geet and Miri, or the new light in which Geet herself was seeing Maan. The shift in the story was significant as well as well put forth.

Dadi was amazing in this chapter. There are so many shades to her, so much that she has gone through yet she knows how to really live and enjoy, how to be smart and tackle her difficult grandson and surely how to push ye right buttons on him to get him thinking. 😆 Oh yes, I loved her presence of mind and quick thinking to stop Dev at the right time before he said something to change Maan's mind over carrying Geet. 😃

Dev was... well, Dev. I was trying to imagine his face when he saw Maan picking Geet up and looked as if he had found an answer to something significant. You know what came to my mind? The scene from the film Tangled when Rapunzel wears her crown for the first the and Pascal looks on with eyes and mouth opening wider by the second. 😆

While Maan's steadfastness when he stood as a strong pillar for his brother and grandmother is commendable, and his stubbornness about not willingly wanting to change his opinion for people (read Geet) is irritating, I really like his perseverance. I agree with Dadi that he should find out about Geet's story himself and when he does, it will mean a lot different to him than if he just heard it from his Dadi. And like Dadi, I have faith that he'll find it out for sure. 😃

The flight down the stairs which was quite a long one (😳) was what I was referring to as the V'day gift. The song that played in my mind for both their conditions was Gustakh Dil from English Vinglish, I can't say why. Maybe because their minds were so trying to fight off what their gustakh dil were feeling with the proximity of each other.

I am now wondering, that if the simple scene of him carrying her down the stairs can be written in somewhat romantic terms by you, what will happen when the real romance starts? Will I have to skip the chapters then? 😆

And I loved that Maan Miri scene. I'm looking forward to a lot more Sheru-imp scenes now. 😃

Thanks for updating, Apa! Loving where the story is headed. 😃

PS: I'm first after a long time!
