Being part of a mythological show, Pooja Sharma aka Draupadi from Mahabharat has got used to the heavy jewellery ritual now. "I take two-three hours to get ready to play Draupadi and then we shoot for 12-14 hours. Fixing the jewellery on you is a task. For the wedding sequence, I required two people to hold my lehenga if I had to move from one place to another. And everyone is doing this; even the boys have to wear earrings and jewellery so everyone is doing this."
Pooja Sharma doesn't really have too much of a task in getting into the skin of the character. "Draupadi has a point of view and doesn't think much before voicing it. I relate to her on that front. We rarely found that quality in women of those times. She was a rarity and often regarded as a woman with sharp tongue," says Pooja. She goes on to say: "In that sense, Draupadi is a role model for women of today. Education for women just doesn't mean to be able to read and write, but also having a perspective on things and voicing them."
Comparisons to the B R Chopra Mahabharat are inevitable, and this new show has already been there and done that. One of the most obvious comparisons is the detailing in which this new show has been made. "I didn't see the original Mahabharat, but out of curiosity saw a few episodes of the show on You Tube. In our show,we are showing the progression of Draupadi's character, unlike the previous one which had jumpcuts. Right from the day she appeared to her wedding, we haven't skipped much details, not to miss any links in the story." The character of Draupadi was introduced a few days back and the response, Pooja says, "has been great for the entry sequence. It has been touted as the fabulous entry."
Pooja surely has one of the most important roles in the show, after all the (in) famous battle was fought for the honour of Draupadi. But Pooja vehemently opposes calling her character revengeful. "People forget that if Draupadi would have been revengeful, there was a gap of thirteen years between the cheer-haran and the battle, she could have got her husbands to take revenge then, but that didn't happen. If she was revengeful, then she would have taken care of Gandhaari after the war?"
