You know what, I'm actually glad you made this topic. I totally agree with your viewpoints.
Objectively speaking, she wasn't super striking. Her nose was a little too big and as you mentioned, on the whole she had big features. Honestly, I think she's alright looking as well. But I think we also have to keep in mind, especially when comparing her to recent actors, there was no such thing as photoshop in those days. What we saw, was the real her. Unlike our current times where all we see is photoshopped people in magazines and whatnot.
I also think the reason people think so highly of her beauty is probably of her cultural impact and her grace. Like others mentioned, she was huge during her time and a trendsetter in bwood. And it helps that she was so graceful and a pretty good actor to boot. And her young death gives her a tragic element (not to mention that beneath all the glamour she did have a sad life). Mix all those elements together and you have a "timeless beauty."
a relatively good reputation and sob story does wonders in changing our perceptions.
