Sidharth Malhotra: 'I'm craving appreciation in terms of performance'

Sidharth Malhotra has said that his character in Hasee Toh Phasee is quite different from the usual Bollywood hero.

The actor stars in the quirky romantic comedy with Parineeti Chopra.


In an interview with Digital Spy, the actor explained: "The main part of the comedy comes form the quirkiness of this boy. I'm playing Nikhil Bhardwaj who's not your typical hero. He's very removed from the character I played in SOTY.

"He's lost. He's running a not so successful events management company. And his parents keep pressuring him to make a certain amount of money. He's not so liked by his parents. They don't think much of him. They don't think he can do much. So he's not so likeable.

"At the same time he's very endearing and he won't ever harm anybody. That was interesting. Very different form SOTY. He's not one of those people who has all the answers. And not your typical hero."

The 29-year-old star won numerous accolades and Best Debut awards for his performance in Karan Johar's college drama about friendship.

Malhotra told DS that while it was great to get so much recognition early on in his career, he has much to prove yet.


"This is the time I have to prove my mettle as an actor. Show performance, show some credibility, show conviction. Everybody likes attention, everybody likes recognition. It's nice. It's great. It's just the beginning and I'm quite lucky to be here, especially coming from outside the industry. But that being said I think the journey has just begun.

"Hasee Toh Phasee is a big test and I'm glad of the opportunity to show people what I'm really made of.

"What I'm craving most of all is some appreciation in terms of performance. So as good as the impact of SOTY has been I want it to go to the next level."

While the actor said he was nervous ahead of the release last week, the film had had a positive response from audiences and also scored well at the box office.
