I knew who's the president of India; in my urgency I messed it up-Alia Bhatt

"I've had a tiring day, please don't be mean to me..." is the opening line of Alia Bhatt. It's difficult to ascertain if that is a request or a warning. Like her father, writer-director Mahesh Bhatt, Alia has been overtly vocal about everything and admits that she got a lot of flak for what she said, including going wrong on the President's name, on Karan Johar's talk show. "It's okay," she shrugs nonchalantly. "I'd rather be stupid than pretend to be intelligent. People connect with you when you make mistakes." Did she really not know the answer? "I knew it, I was only trying to outrace the guys and in my urgency, I messed it up," she says.
Alia admits she's competitive but doesn't regret dropping out of college before graduation. "I'm not studious, I mess up the names of Pranab Mukerjee and Prithviraj Chauhan yaar... what would I do in school?" she laughs unapologetically.
Her half-sister Pooja Bhatt's career didn't kick off as spectacularly as expected. Isn't she worried hers might go the same way? "No two stories are the same, you have to learn from your own mistakes," she philosophises, constantly checking her reflection on the windowpane.
She asserts that Pooja never really wanted to be an actress. "My mother (Soni Razdan) tells me that to be an actress you have to be consumed by the desire. I cannot do anything but act, I'm only a baarvee pass," she points out. Right now, Alia's is the name on many directors must-have list. "It's scary," she shudders. "A celeb has to be perfect, and I'm not. I don't wish to be, it's boring."
She's more like Veera, the character she plays in Imtiaz Ali's film Highway who wears her heart on her sleeve and is prone to mood swings. "There are days when I'm shouting at my pillow and acting like a bhangi (wasted). Other days, I pretend to be poised and sexy. I'm flawed and I hate pimples!" she groans.
Heartbreaks are not for her. "I've had break-ups but I can't be depressed for a year," she quips. Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, which of them is boyfriend material? "Sid looks interesting, but how can I romance my friends," she argues, adding she's not dating anyone. At 21, isn't it boring? "When I'm working it's perfect. When I'm not, I'm like, please someone ask me out," she quips.
