around a month and a half back, i interviewed Gazal Rai, a.k.a. Pooja Ghai of Left Right Left, as a part of my article, on working and professionally successful students.
I am a student journalist and this was a part of my job!
the first thing that took me on, was that Gazal is a Gujarati.....i never imagined this as she speaks awesome Punjabi as Pooja.
She is really very sweet and i was at an ease talking to her.....it felt like chatting with a friend!
when i called her she was in the middle of the shooting, but after the shooting within a couple of hours she rang me and we had the conversation. she msged the day the article was published, and is still in touch!
well, here is the article i finally formed after the interview:
She is a Gujarati girl & speaks splendid Punjabi, with a perfect accent, as the bubbly and cute Pooja Ghai in the SAB TV soap Left Right Left.
"Nearly 12hrs of my day are spent acting…. in such a case, good time management becomes vital, for which one must learn to prioritize.", she says. Ghazal Rai a third year commerce graduation student manages to strike a perfect balance between the mounting University exams pressure, her study & her acting commitments.
The day, for Ghazal breaks with the 7am lecture at A.J.College of Commerce and Economics. She attends the first two lectures, and rushes to Powai by 8.30am, where the set for the Kanchanjunga Military Academy has been set up.
So, when and how does she study? "I try studying on the sets, but that's scarcely ever happens! So I make myself a schedule. Traveling, and traffic jams, gives me some time to revise.", she explains. And if thee shoot packs up early, Ghazal gets into action again and rushes to her tuition class or sits down on her study desk at home for some extra hours of serious studying.
"I love Math!", and she giggles, "I haven't studied the subject since 12th, but had fun with trigo formulae, by pulling a simple two line sum on and on…for 2 pages!"
College attendance would have been a problem, she admits, ". But I spoke to our Vice-Principal and he has always cooperated. Still, I make it a point o attend at least one lecture everyday and be in touch with what's going on in the class" Coming from and educated and enlightened family, education comes first for Ghazal.
Life said 'ACTION!!' to Ghazal when she participated in the inter-college drama competition, and won three awards. "It gave me a boost, and I knew I had the potential, and I can do it!" and then her first professional assignment followed. She did theatre & worked in the Gujarati play 'Saat Fera ni Hera Pheri'. And took a step ahead soon by her first television show 'Happy Go Lucky', where the makers of Left Right Left spotted her and she became the innocent and jolly yet very strong and determined Cadet Pooja Ghai.
As stage-fear or fear of camera is referred, Ghazal's voice turns mischievous, "I have always loved to be in front of cameras. Even when I was young, and went on family holidays, I kept posing and my papa kept clicking!" She loves and enjoys being in front of the camera and refers to it as her best pal, "I believe the camera to be my friend, and so it gives me the freedom to express myself without slightest hesitation, while recieting even the most difficult lines."
Confidence reflects from Ghazal's voice, "Why fear? After all, in front of the camera, you are the Queen!"
She is planning to do her Masters, but believes that studies go on throughout one's lifetime. However, when it comes to acting, Ghazal is more ambitious, "I shall definitely continue acting & will do anything and everything that interests me."
Speaking of spending time with friends, Ghazal says, "We meet up between shots, or go for dinners, after pack up. And at times catch up with movies at 11o'clock shows!"
"To me, being with my friends and family is like being with myself…. I like it better than being alone!", she says. Shooting for 12hrs, for 20-25days, makes every second spent with her loved ones very special, which in itself serves as a refreshment to Ghazal.
"Awesome!", she says, as we asked her about what would she do, given a complete holiday…no college, no shooting, no studies, no tuitions, and no traffic jams! "I would spend a lot of the time with my family and call my friends over. I'd go shopping, party, eat loads of chocolates, and play games, go for bike rides with my friends…. and my list goes on and on….", excitement fills her voice, "…. just a lot of masti, masti, masti, and more masti!"
Ghazal Rai's day ends late at 2.00am, after a family dinner or some time with friends, and some hours of accounts! And again sets off, the next day at 6 o'clock, with new energy, new aspirations and redoubled vigor!
