In Grantsburg, Wisconsin, a farmer comes out to investigate noises from his barn and sees a man run into the woods. The farmer opens fire but misses, and the runner jumps out onto the highway... and car hits him, knocking Garth down.

Later, Sam goes to the Grantsburg hospital to check on a John Doe. The nurse gives Sam the room and says that the patient is popular. When Sam goes in, he finds Dean checking on Garth. They avoid talking for a minute, and then tell each other that they heard about Garth's John Doe report on the wire. Dean says that he's got it covered and admits that Garth has been out since they got there. Sam notices that Garth is handcuffed to the bed and Dean explains that he was arrested for killing the cow

Dean has Sam lock the door and then prepares to inject Garth with adrenalin to wake him up, pointing out that Garth walked out on them and Kevin. Sam slaps Garth awake instead and he takes in where he is. They explain what happened to him and Garth says that he was on a hunt and doesn't remember killing a cow. Garth starts to vomit and runs into the bathroom. While they wait, Sam explains that Gadreel left some of his grace in him but Castiel removed it. Sam notices the mark on Dean's arm and Dean explains that it's the Mark of Cain.

The brothers finally realize that Garth has escaped out the window and discover that he stole a car... and left his hospital robe behind. While Dean checks the hospital cameras, Sam visits the farmer and the man explains that his cows' organs were ripped clean out. When Sam calls to tell Dean what he's learned, Dean lies and says that the cameras were pointing the wrong way. Sam catches up to him and realizes that Dean was lying to him, and they agree to go their separate ways again once they find Garth. Dean has traced the car to a Bess Meyers in the next town over and they take off.

Sam and Dean burst into Bess' house, guns drawn, and find Garth in the kitchen. They search the place and find no sign of Bess, but she bursts out of the closet and attacks Sam, teeth bared. Garth restrains Dean while Sam slashes Bess on the arm with his silver blade, burning her. As the Winchesters try to figure out what's going on, Garth explains that he and Bess are both werewolves. He introduces Bess, his beloved, to Dean and Sam, and explains that he was bitten by a werewolf six months ago. Garth didn't want to admit that he messed up and knew there was no cure, and was ready to kill himself. Bess smelled him out and they married four months ago, and her pack has taken Garth in as one of their own. Garth has been controlling himself, feeding on cattle rather than humans.

Bess explains that she was born a werewolf and the brothers ask to talk to Garth alone. They're concerned about the werewolves but Garth assures them that the pack can be trusted. Dean wants more proof then his word and Garth invites them to come pray with the pack.

The next day, Dean goes to the pack's farm with Garth. Meanwhile, Sam leaves the sheriff's department and waits for the sheriff. As Dean approaches the house, he hears singing . Garth's mother-in-law Joy answers the door and promises Dean that he's safe under her roof. Garth is playing the piano for the group and wraps up, and his father-in-law, Minister Jim, says that he'll meet everyone on Sunday. The pack leaves, including the children, and Garth introduces Jim and his family. Dean refuses to shake hands with Jim, and Garth tries to pass it off as a fear of germs. Jim admits that they're no different than anyone else and invites Dean to supper. Dean refuses until Garth guilts him into coming along.

The Meyers have steak, rare, and Dean eyes them nervously. He asks if they say grace and Jim explains that they're spiritual but not necessarily religious. Dean notices that they're all wearing silver bullets around their necks, and Bess explains that they wear them as a reminder of how preciously their lives are. Jim explains that Bess was born a werewolf and soon after a hunter killed his first wife. He talks about how empty revenge was and looked forward into his life, and he found Joy and she helped him raise Bess. Joy explains that her father, the previous reverend, was a werewolf as well.

Sam talks to Sheriff Pat, who explains that Jim and his family are pillars of the community and never give anyone any problems. There's been no unusual incidents in the area and Sam gives Sheriff Pat his card.

Later, Dean checks out the refrigerator and finds it filled with meat. Two of Jim's sons, Russ and Joba, come up and hint that Dean should leave. Garth comes in and asks them to leave, and asks why Dean is being so hard on the Meyers. Dean insists that it can't be as normal as it seems, but Garth insists that he's found love and a family and it doesn't matter what they are. Garth says that he had trouble accepting things at first, and Dean complains that he didn't let them know what was happening. When Garth mentions Kevin, Dean finally tells him that Kevin is dead because of him.

Sam drives out to the farm and wonders why they should hang around. Sheriff Pat calls to tell him that a deer has been eviscerated. The brothers drive to the crime scene and Dean confirms that the blood is fresh... unaware that the sheriff is transforming into a werewolf. Dean realizes that someone killed the deer after they were called, and the sheriff says that they should have just left. Dean throws a silver knife into his chest and Sam confirms that he's wearing a silver bullet necklace like Jim's flock. It has the word "Ragnorak" inscribed on it and Dean figures that they know enough. Sam wants to check it out further and Dean has him grab Garth and lock him up while he check's Jim's church.

Dean arrives at the church and goes inside. He finds a locked door and picks the lock, and finds Jim's office.

Sam goes to Garth's room but his friend isn't there. There are signs of a struggle.

Dean finds a book on Norse mythology with a wolf's paw on the cover. There's a reference to Ragnorak in it. Dean continues looking and finds Jim's computer, complete with family screen saver picture. He does a search on Ragnorak and finds a reference to the end of days. Sam calls and tells Dean that someone has torn the place up. He figures that they were taken. Dean explains that there are cults calling themselves the Maw of Fenris, who worship the great wolf Fenris that kills Odin at the end of days. According to the stories, Ragnorak is a plan for human extinction and werewolf domination. Dean says that it's time to take Jim down and Sam reluctantly agrees. As Sam hangs up, Russ and Joab knock him out.

Jim pulls up to the church and goes inside. He smells Dean and hears his heartbeat, and says that even monsters know fear. Jim calmly says that he came there to work on his sermon, and Dean asks about the Maw of Fenris. The reverend explains that the book's story was part of their beliefs, but he has eradicated it from their congregation. Dean explains that Sheriff Pat tried to kill him and his brother, and orders Jim at gunpoint to show him the bullet. He confirms that it doesn't have "Ragnorak" on it and explains that it was on Sheriff Pat's bullet, and Jim insists that the cult is dead. Dean tells him that Garth and Bess are missing.

Russ and Joba drag the unconscious Sam to a barn where Garth and Bess are tied up. Joy comes in with them and slaps Bess, insisting that she's not her real daughter. She then boasts that she's going to hurt all three prisoners and Garth, crying, apologizes to Bess.

Dean tries to call Sam without success and drives off in the Impala.

Joy slaps Garth, who begs her not to do it to Bess. Joy explains that she's the last of her bloodline because of the hunters. Sam wakes up and Joy walks over to him. He wonders how she can betray her pack, and Joy takes out a gun and explains that Jim preached a new direction of co-existence between man and werewolves. However, a hunter killed her brother a year ago and Joy decided that there could be no peace as long as man lives, because man destroys.

Dean arrives at the house and kills Russ.

Sam figures that Joy wants to rule and she explains that Jim holds onto his humanity because he was bitten rather than born as a werewolf. Joy plans to frame Sam and Dean for the murder of Garth and Bess, and provoke Jim into a killing rage. She tells Bess that she takes no joy from killing her but Ragnorak is bigger than all of them. Garth starts to transform as Joy prepares to shoot Bess, and Sam kicks the gun out of her hand. As she bares her claws, Dean jumps in wearing Russ' coat to conceal his scent and kills Joba. Joy lunges for the gun but Dean grabs his gun first and shoots her dead.

The next day, Garth assures the Winchesters that he'll be good to Bess and gives Sam a hug. Jim is with Bess and Garth tells Dean that he's taking it hard and blaming himself. Garth also admits that Dean was right and he screwed up again. Dean tells him that Kevin's death is on him, not Garth, and starts to leave. Garth offers to come back with him and hunt, pointing out that being a werewolf is an advantage, and insists that he wants to make things right for leaving Kevin. Dean tells him to take advantage of what he has there and hold onto some happiness, no matter what it come from. He then gives a surprised Garth a hug.

Sam and Dean drive to where Sam has his car parked and Sam starts to go. Dean gets out and admits that he was messed up on the night he left Sam. He apologies for what he did to Sam but figures that at least when they're together, they're splitting the crappiness. Sam agrees but warns that it's not going to go away because they don't see things the same way anymore. He admits that he can't trust Dean anymore and says that they'll work as hunters, but they're not going to be brothers. Dean has no choice but to accept and they drive off together in the Impala.
