Are Bollywood stars really the right choice to pocket the votes?

Will you vote on the basis which star is supporting which group. Is that teh right criteria????

Other parties bank on stars, but BSP only has Mayawati

By Sharat Pradhan Mar 22, 2007, 11:45 GMT

Lucknow, March 22 (IANS) The Congress has its Gandhi stars, the Samajwadi Party the Bachchan family and the BJP its Dharmendras and Hema Malinis, not to mention political bigwigs like L.K. Advani. But the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is banking only on chief Mayawati to bring in the votes in the crucial Uttar Pradesh polls.

All parties are gearing up to bring in the biggest and the best campaigners as electioneering takes off in Uttar Pradesh for the seven-phased assembly elections from April 7. It is only the BSP that has nobody else but Mayawati to fall back on.

'We do not believe in the gimmick of roping in film-stars or any other high-profile persons for the campaign. Mayawatiji is competent and strong enough to meet the combined might of top leaders of the entire opposition,' BSP general secretary Satish Chandra Misra told IANS.

The 51-year-old Dalit leader, who has emerged as the undisputed inheritor of the late BSP founder Kanshi Ram's political legacy, kicks off her campaign March 24 from Auraiya, just next to arch adversary and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's home in Etawah.

Though she had carried out her party's campaign single-handedly in 2002 as well, because Kanshi Ram decided to focus attention in Punjab, this is the first time she undertakes the task after her political mentor's demise.

Her rivals -- the ruling Samajwadi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress -- are going quite the other way. They will have their national leaders and are roping in Bollywood stars to help them along the way.

Yet another attraction at poll rallies, particularly in rural constituencies, will be Mumbai's dance bar girls being hired in a big way by different political parties.

Mulayam's Samajwadi Party tops the star list with none other than Amitabh Bachchan likely to share the stage with him at several places. Poll strategists are in the process of working out a plan to add Abhishek Bachchan and fiancee Aishwarya Rai for the party's poll show.

MPs and former stars Jaya Bachchan and Jaya Prada are already making their presence felt, hitting the front pages Tuesday when they accompanied Mulayam to Etawah where he filed his nomination. They are likely to be with him throughout the campaign.

The party's well-connected general secretary Amar Singh is understood to be negotiating with several other Bollywood stars to add more glamour to the party. Prominent among these is Shilpa Shetty and playback singer Sonu Nigam.

The BJP is also giving final touches to a high profile poll campaign to be launched by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former chief minister Kalyan Singh from Kanpur next week.

Others to follow include former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani and national leaders like Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and party president Raj Nath Singh, who proposes to camp in the state for the next two months.

It will also bank in on its own film star MPs Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha and TV actress Smriti Irani. Efforts are on to bring in the second generation, Vinod Khanna's son Akshay and Dharmendra's children Sunny and Esha Deol.

Not willing to lag behind, the Congress plans road shows with its MP Govinda and supporters like Rajesh Khanna. And the buzz is that the party is also trying to get Shah Rukh Khan to match the Bachchan's family appeal.

Of course, party chief Sonia Gandhi's children Rahul and Priyanka are the ultimate stars. They will be there with their mother, who will obviously be spinning across the vast state seeking people's support for the party that has been down in the dumps in the politically vital state.

Are Bollywood stars really the right choice to pocket the votes?

not at all. political parties can use film starts to gather the crowd but not the votes.their margin of votes can increase by little percentage and thats also for the first time eg. Dharminder, Govinda won bcz of their start power but they can never be succeed for the second time for sure.

Will you vote on the basis which star is supporting which group. Is that teh right criteria????

I'll never vote on the basis of stars supportive party.in my views only illitrate ppl , poor and blind fan followers can vote to the party which is supported by stars .those ppl who know the power of vote can never vote on the basis of this.

stars support any party bcz they get money for it. they dont support bcz of they believe in their views etc.Preity Zinta came to Punjab so many time to do the rallies in the support of Ashwini Khanna( I think) not bcz he is very good person or politician but bcz he is a husband of her best friend.then how can ppl vote on the basis of this??? those who do that they r contributing to making our system more bad.

I am going to take the risk of sounding a bit harsh and ridiculous (to some).

The way Indian politics is, I think that not only film-stars, but also people like Rabdidevi, Phoolandevi and other criminals are MOSTLY UNWORTHY.

We should toss away the high chair of equality when it comes to seeking candidates for an election.
Degree level Education (history, political science, environmental science, agriculture, science and technology) should be made a criterium and every politician-to-be should prove the knowledge of the above- and the capacity of knowing the country they wish to represent. If film stars can pass it, well, they can join politics by all means.
I can imagine people finding my thoughts on this issue ridicuous since it seemingly prefers educated mass over uneducated and hence points towards unequality 😕. However, I firmly believe that this is what we need. People who study, people who understand and people who care should run a country of a billion people.

I doubt that most filmstars fall in the category, and hence I dislike their running Govt official post. Yet, in support of them, I will add that many others are also equal nautanki and unworthy of running the elections.

Last but not the least, it is manipulative of political parties to RIDE on Filmstars' publicity, and STUPID of us citizens / voters to get manipulated.

Yet the Indian Parliament fails to come to a consensus to prohibit criminals from standing in the elections. Just a week earlier they failed to do so for the umpteenth time. Even Abu Salem wants to stand in the elections.🤢

That's what I think too. I'd much rather have Rajesh Khanna / Vaijayanti Mala / Hema rather than Abu salem 🤢.

Nice topic!

I will never vote Film stars or TV stars only on the basis of their charm. If the actors are like Shabhana Azmi only then I will vote for them!

I will vote a local worthy politician(who addressed my constituency issues more) than a big film star like Amitabh or Hema Malini who simply sit in Mumbai for their film shootings!!

Cheers,

Are Bollywood stars really the right choice to pocket the votes?

Nice topic Lata.......Indian politicians disgust me (except may be a select few..who get lost anyways)...for that matter...politicians ...india or else where do...

As far as the Bollywood stars are concerned..I would say its morally wrong to make the gullible people vote just because their favorite star is the member and is canvassing for a particular party....votes should be asked by putting their agenda nd their plans for the future of the country and not because SRK or Amitabh is there...

Will you vote on the basis which star is supporting which group. Is that teh right criteria????

No never......i would rather not vote.........what do we have to choose between anyways.......the bad and the worse........the dumb and the dumber........i still can't believe that Bush got chosen for a second term here in USA but then people don't have choices....🤢

Why do political parties use stars to attract support?

They might not have enough on their election agenda, so they want to do a show-off and hide they really have nothing worth offering in terms of change in life

Or

The political party has a message, they just dont have any good orator who will capture the attention of the people, if this the case yeah I would listen to what the star wants to say

End the end if the voter votes based upon an issue does it matter whether a film star preached that message or a common leader?

A good leader may not be a good orator and a good orator may not be a good leader, I have hardly seen a politician speak more than 5 mins and keep my attention(I think Pramod Mahajan and Bal Thackeray had/have that ability, whatever their politics, but they are/were very good speakers), I think BJP has a stronger set of speakers than anyone else, policies dont know

I dont think you are talking about a scenario where the star himself/herself is contesting election, in that I hope people are not voting based upon their acting roles
