Big Magic, Reliance Broadcast Network's regional general entertainment channel for the Hindi-speaking heartland of Central India, has roped in popular television actors Varun Badola and Rajeshwari Sachdev as mentors for its upcoming property, Big Fame Star. Joining them will be television actress Sara Khan who will be seen hosting the show on Big Magic. The youth talent hunt, which will penetrate to the grassroot level to present a platform to superstar aspirants, kicked off auditions across 15 markets in Uttar Pradesh on May 4 and is all set to witness the first phase of mega auditions among shortlisted contestants from Moradabad, Saharanpur and Meerut on May 9, 2013.

As mentors, Badola and Sachdev will join Anup Soni and Tisca Chopra who are judges on the show. During the auditions, the mentor-duo will be responsible for grooming and training the contestants, as well as judging them thereafter in order to close in on the finalists who will feature on Big Fame Star. Sara Khan, who joins the quartet as host for the show, will be seen guiding the contestants as their friend and support.

Following the first phase of mega auditions will be two more phases wherein more contestants will be selected from 12 additional markets across Uttar Pradesh ' with Aligarh being the next city to witness their youth's rise to fame. By the time the three phases of auditions draw to a close, the mentors will have shortlisted 16 contestants who will be able to take their dreams of superstardom to another level through weekly challenges and rounds that will be featured on Big Fame Star.
Sunil Kumaran, Business Head ' Language TV, Reliance Broadcast Network, said, "Big Fame Star is a multi-faceted talent hunt which aims to penetrate to the deepest level to unearth some of the most gifted youth in Uttar Pradesh."

This move ensures the best programming mix to its audiences, as Big Magic gears up for phase II of digitisation with RBNL's recently launched consumer awareness campaign 'Samajdhari se Chune, Apna Set Top Box'. After an extremely successful roll-out of the campaign across the four metros, it now extends across 38 cities in DAS phase II. The 12-week campaign launched on April 1 has been designed to empower consumers with information on digitisation

Exclusive Interview With Varun Badola
A renowned Actor | Date of Brith: 7th January, 1974

Interview By: Rajneesh Agnihotri | Editor: Mohan Surya | Posted on 28th February, 2010

Varun Badola, extremely hard-working actor and a fabulous dancer, did his schooling from Sardar Patel Vidhyalaya, New Delhi. He is married to singer-actress Rajeshwari Sachdev. He has 2 sisters. The elder one, Alka is married and has appeared in KumKum and a younger sister Kalindi is a radio jockey. After completing college, he started his career as costume arranger.

Balaji Telefilms gave him his first break in 'Koshish-Ek Aasha' which came as superhit show on Zee TV. After that he never looked back.

Soon he joined Director Tigmanshu Dhulia as an Assistant Director too. Till now he has done movies like Charas, Hasail and Main, Meri Patni aur Woh and a number of TV serials. He think that in industry he has two Godfathers. Among them first one is his father, Vishvmohan Badola who taught him the basics of acting and the other one is Tigmanshu Dhulia, who taught him everything about filmmaking. He wrote scripts and directed his show 'Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein'. He was a dialogue writer for Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein and Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani. He also appeared in the celebrity dance show named Nach Baliye 2 with his wife Rajeshwari and was one of the semi-finalists.

How do you find yourself attached to Uttarakhand?

I am attached to Uttarakhand not only because my surname is "Badola", but also because my parents have given me such culture. I may be anywhere but I talk to my parents and relatives in my mother tongue which is "Garhwali". I have spent most of the time outside Uttarakhand. I was in Allahabad for 5 years, 12 years in Delhi and for last 11 years I am here in Mumbai but still I am a Pahadi.

What are your memories in Kotdwar?

In Kotdwar there is a place name Bhabher. I have a farmhouse at this place. One thing I love to do when I am here is to gaze at the stars. The panoramic view of the sky I get to see here is unmatched. In my childhood, one of my favourite pass times was to catch fire-flies(Jugnu). Very often I along with my friend used to have a scooter ride to the top of the mountains and eat roasted chicken there. Another specical attraction was the "Bhandara" which happens mostly on Sundays at Sidhbali Mandir, Kotdwar. I used to go there very frequently. I really enjoyed those days of my life.

What do you like the most in Uttarakhand?

First thing about Uttarakhand is the feeling of freedom we have, as it is an independent and naturally beautiful place. Second is the wave there, which gives peace of mind. When I go there I feel relaxed and very good. My grandmothers (Nani's) village is Soli which is near to Rikhnikhal. I love that place.

Tell us something about your childhood?

Don't ask me about my childhood it is difficult to mention, because I didn't like studying I was never a good student.

Who is the ideal in your life?

For me my father is an ideal. He is a very good theatre artist and also a very good singer. Whatever I learnt in my like is from my father. He worked with Ashutosh Govarikar in his movie Swadesh.

What are your views about Uttarakhandi Theatre or films?

I don't think Uttarakhandi cinema exists in a true sense . I have never felt the presence of it. It doesn't have any fame or existence. I have seen only one Garhwali film Jagwal even though it was the first Garhwali film still it was good in all ways. All my family members praised it. There was one more good movie Gharjavai. Its time that we should work hard for Uttarakhandi theatre or cinema which has not yet groomed up.

If you get an opportunity will you work in Uttarakhandi film?

Yes off course! I am an artist, if I get such an opportunity I will surely do it and will take it as my good fortune. But I should like the story of the film.

How is your experience to work with director Tigmanshu Dhulia?

About Tishu Bhai, I can't comment because I don't have words to describe him. I have learnt so much from him. I have worked as his assistance for four years.

What's your favourite Garhwali song?

I have heard many Garhwali songs among them my favourite is 'Chela Ki Yaad Ma Jikudi Dhak Dhak Kare', long time back sung by my father Vishvamohan Badola.

Any message for people in Uttarakhand?

I Would like to say that only we natives can bring a name to Uttarakhand. The most important thing is we have to believe in humanity and as "Uttarakhandi's" we should stop discriminating between Garhwali, Kumauni and other people on the basis of religion and caste. What matters is love and a sense of belongingness towards the place. If you treat a person with care and affection, you will be treated the same way.

Celebrity chat - Varun Badola
Excerpts from a live chat with TV actor Varun Badola Q: How difficult was it portraying Neeraj in Koshish?
A: It needed a bit of homework. Things became simple later, perhaps because I have the knack of impersonating people.
Q: Is it difficult to impersonate people you don't identify with?
A: No. I guess I am in this field because I have no such problems. I wouldn't have been an actor if I couldn't act! The high you get while emoting, or portraying characters that are different from you is incomparable.
Q: How did you prepare yourself for the role?
A: I saw Tom Hanks in Forest Gump almost six times.
Q: Do you like your role in Koshish Ek Aasha?
A: What do you think? It's been a year, and I'm still around!
Q: Do you plan to enter movies?
A: Who doesn't!
Q: What does portraying Neeraj feel like?
A: I am very comfortable now, though that wasn't the case to begin with. I wasn't playing somebody I am or someone I knew, so I needed to identify with and learn a lot of mannerisms of the character, which was both difficult and physically tiring. However, this lasted for only the first nine episodes. It doesn't feel that way any longer.
Q: How are you treating fame?
A: I did not become an actor to vindicate any social cause. As an actor I need my share of popularity, fame and money. The thought of being famous has not really struck me as yet. Honestly, all the popularity I have got from Koshish is not enough for me - let's pray to God that I keep my head on my shoulders and use my Capricorn instincts to acquire more.
Q: Are you married?
A: Not as yet!
Q: Who is your favourite co-star in Koshish Ek Asha?
A: It's hard to say. I share a good chemistry with Sandhya, my on-screen wife and I guess she would be the obvious choice. However, Uday Tikekar, who plays my father in the serial, is brilliant. In fact doing one scene with him is more satisfying than anything one has done during the entire month. I guess everybody is equally good out there!
Q: What made you accept this role and how did you get it?
A: I had 250 bucks in my pocket and nothing in my bank account at that time, so probably my ego made me accept the role. I could have said no, because the role could have generated an image that I was not looking for. At the same time, rejecting the role would mean that I let go of a challenge. Finally, two people were short-listed and Ekta found me on the line, whereas the other person wasn't at home.
Q: Does Neeraj recover?
A: Yes he does!
Q: What are the other projects you are working on?
A: There's Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan, on Zee TV.
Q: How do you handle the different characters you portray?
A: By trying to think like the character.
Q: Which do you prefer acting or directing?
A: Both the art forms have their own charm. A director has the freedom to do a variety of things, including playing with characters. An actor is allowed this liberty only if he has the leeway by the director. At the same time, acting gives you unmatched popularity in India. Also, executing a character is far more satisfying than sitting on a chair and being judgemental about it. At the same time, if I hhad the choice I would like to both.
Q: Would you expect your wife to act the way Kajal did if you were in Neeraj's shoes?
A: Who wouldn't want to be treated the way Neeraj is treated by Kajal!?!
Q: Do you think it is right to get a girl to marry a mentally challenged person?
A:If it weren't, Koshish would have never happened!
Q: How do you manage to make that funny expression in Koshish Ek Asha?
A: I put cotton balls in my mouth and try to pull my face up.
Q: Were you apprehensive about taking on a woman-dominated serial?
A: No, the thought never crossed my mind. The character itself was so strong that it would have found a place for itself.
Q: How was it working with Sandhya, she is a fabulous actress?
A: It was an extraordinary feeling. She is definitely a fabulous actress.
Q: Do you think that Mihir's death in Kyo Ki Saas... was a trick to increase the viewership?
A: No. Kyon ki... was doing well anyways. Mihir's death wouldn't have made much of a difference.
Q: Are you attracted to Sandhya? She is quite beautiful.
A: Apart from the fact that she has a boyfriend, I'm just there to do my job. She is beautiful and I appreciate having good-looking people around me. However, if I started falling in love with or getting attracted to every second woman, I end up making life difficult for myself because Mumbai has a hot crowd!
Q: Do you have a godfather?
A: In fact I have two godfathers. The first is my father who taught me the basics of acting. The second is Tigmanshu Dhulia, the person I assisted for the last 4 years. He has taught me everything I know about filmmaking.
enjoy
